Eli Beer is a pioneer, social entrepreneur, President and Founder of United Hatzalah of Israel. In thirty years, the organization has grown to more than 6,500 volunteers who unite together to provide immediate, life-saving care to anyone in need - regardless of race or religion. This community EMS force network treats over 730,000 incidents per year, in Israel, as they wait for ambulances and medical attention. Eli’s vision is to bring this life-saving model across the world. In 2015, Beer expanded internationally with the establishment of branches in South America and other countries, including “United Rescue” in Jersey City, USA, where the response time was reduced to just two minutes and thirty-five seconds. Facing this violence, interviewees waged their campaign for sixteen years, from 1978 to 1994. Their stories tell us about the changes in caste, class, and gender in the 1980s that led to the India of today.

Taibai Mawade's husband, Janardhan Mawade, was killed by upper-caste men during the 1978 violence in Marathwada. Taibai survived and joined the Namantar Movement, to fight for and win the university renaming that had sparked the violence. After the white supremacist terrorism that occurred in my hometown, Charlottesville, Virginia, Taibai's story is giving me the hope that I need to keep resisting.
