A young FBI agent named Leah Marx arrives in Los Angeles and receives a tip in 2010 about brutal conditions at Men’s Central Jail downtown. Such complaints have gone nowhere for years, since they pit the allegations of inmates against the word of jail deputies. But she finds informants, including a wily bank robber, Anthony Brown, who is facing life in prison and is willing to help. She reflects on a family tragedy that informs her perspective and fuels her sense of mission. Meanwhile, an ambitious young jailer named James Sexton works his way through the ranks, trying to overcome his image as a “brass baby,” the son of a prominent law officer, while navigating a complicated agency where loyalty is a prime value. That jail was notorious for violence and neglect, and outside investigations had rarely gained traction. By entering Men’s Central Jail, the FBI was challenging a department that had long resisted oversight. The series is reported and hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Goffard, best known for his work on Dirty John. In 1982, director Steven Spielberg followed up Raiders of the Lost Ark with a family-centered feature about a young boy who meets an alien, based on his own childhood experience of creating an imaginary friend after his parents’ divorce. With a budget of just over $10 million, Spielberg and screenwriter Melissa Mathison brought the alien to life with the help of Italian special effects master Carlo Rambaldi, with the music of John Williams hitting all the right notes. Add in some product placement from Reese’s Pieces (let’s not talk about that Atari video game) and a stellar young cast including Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore, and the flick was a hit. In fact, it surpassed Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time, until Spielberg’s own Jurassic Park broke the record in 1993. Much of the film feels iconic now, from William’s score to the flying bikes. Critic Roger Ebert, in an essay he wrote in 2002 as a letter to his grandchildren about watching it with them, wrote of that moment: “I remember when I saw the movie at Cannes. Even the audience there, people who had seen thousands of movies, let out a whoop at that moment.” But despite the praise, it’s worth remembering that Columbia Pictures put the film in turnaround, and M&Ms passed on the opportunity to feature their candy because they thought the film would scare children. So, over 40 years since its release, is E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial still worth phoning home about? Or is it better left in the back of the childhood closet? With an ensemble cast, including Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Mackenzie Davis, Donald Glover, and Benedict Wong, the film was an interplanetary success, premiering at Number One and going on to top the box office for multiple non-consecutive weekends. Just a month after its release, the film surpassed Gladiator to become Scott's highest-grossing film at the domestic box office. It’s autumn in New York, and we’re feeling the love with another Nora Ephron rom-com. This week, we’re dialing up the classic Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan tale of “boy meets girl in internet chat room, boy discovers girl's true identity, and then boy kills girl’s business and destroys her livelihood.” Audiences loved the third team-up of Hanks & Ryan (following Joe Versus the Volcano and Sleepless in Seattle) in this flick that retells Miklós László’s 1937 play Parfumerie, which had previously been adapted as The Shop Around the Corner in 1940 and In the Good Old Summertime in 1949. Updated for the early online era, this version features an ensemble including Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Steve Zahn, Dave Chappelle, and Jean Stapleton. Although the movie booked over $250 million at the box office, not all critics penned rave reviews. One reviewer called the film “almost unwatchably saccharine, representing pretty much everything wrong with today's big-budget, high-concept Hollywood filmmaking,” while others bemoaned its rampant product placement. Less than two years after its release, the corporate marriage was consummated when America Online, the originator of the film’s titular salutation, and studio Warner Bros. merged to form AOL Time Warner. While the film never shows the actual heist, the lead-up and aftermath are explored in bloody detail, as the Dogs turn on each other when the job goes south. Boasting all of his directorial hallmarks - graphic violence, extended dialogue featuring profanity and references to popular culture, and epic needledrops (here in the form of K-Billy's Super Sounds of the Seventies) - the film immediately established Tarantino as a made man in Hollywood and was later named the greatest independent film of all time by Empire Magazine. In 1991, Daniel Petrie, the director of Beverly Hills Cop and Turner & Hooch, brought a script he'd co-written with David Koepp, based on the novel by William P. Kennedy, to the big screen. Starring Sean Astin a year before he had everyone chanting his name in Rudy and Wil Wheaton a year after he’d beamed off the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, this film had its finger on the pulse of moviemaking trends. When the red dawn sees an elite boarding school under siege by Colombian terrorists, leaving the students running scared from lethal weapons, these kids must stand and deliver to defend their home away from home alone, or risk dying hard and ending up in the dead poets society. With Louis Gossett Jr., Denholm Elliott, Jerry Orbach, R. Lee Ermey, and Andrew Divoff rounding out the ensemble cast, this coming-of-age action flick was a modest success at the box office, but quickly forgotten, finishing 87th at the ‘91 box office. But old playthings never die, they just sink to the bottom of the toybox, so we’re digging up and dusting off Toy Soldiers - and we’re gonna play with it for a little bit. Ten years ago, 2015 was the year of the epic Western. Two films, Alejandro Iñárritu’s The Revenant and Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, clocked in at an average length of 170 minutes and scored a combined 15 Academy Award nominations, winning 4 between them. As a pair, the two films brought in nearly $700 million at the box office. Along with John Maclean’s Sundance darling Slow West, the year marked a return to prominence of the western genre, foreshadowing the next decade’s breakout hits like Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone and Hell or High Water, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Slipping somewhat under the radar in 2015 was the directorial debut of S. Craig Zahler, a prolific author and screenwriter with a penchant for wit, grit, and gore. Zahler cast Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins in a Western akin to John Ford’s The Searchers by way of Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes. Director Joe Johnston, who worked in design and VFX for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, is best known for effects-heavy family pics like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Rocketeer, and Jumanji. But in 1999, he tried his hand at the “based on a true story” inspirational biopic genre, based on the early life of NASA engineer Homer Hickam, as told in Hickam’s memoir Rocket Boys. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Chris Owen, and Laura Dern, the film tells the story of a coal miner’s son who was inspired by the launch of Sputnik in 1957 to take up rocketry with a group of friends against his father’s wishes. A critical and commercial success, the anagramically-titled October Sky sounds stellar. But over two decades later, does it still shoot for the moon, or is it a dud?
