We are in the final week of the church year- about to head into Advent and the Christmas season! This week our sermon is based on Colossians 11:15, 20. The message is that our great King, Jesus, does not seem to be like the kings of this world, or any king we might imagine! He does not rule in pleasant gardens, showing us majesty in flowing velvet robes and golden crowns. He rules in humility, by doing his Father’s will, and in bearing the worst of sufferings so that we can be closer to our loving God. This same King Jesus is the head of the Church, and we all live in his Body; through his servant heart we return to our fullest relationship with God. May we look for things that are not what they seem this week- examples of leadership through laying down of power, or selfless care that lifts someone lowly. This is the love and example of Jesus, alive in our world today. Amen. The sermon was written for LCA and read by Shane Rosenzweig. Support the show…

This week’s Gospel reading Luke 21:5-19 reminds us of the ‘signs of the times’. Jesus is speaking to his followers of the trials they will endure to follow him as they wait for the fulfillment of God’s kingdom on earth. This reading could be a worrying one- indeed these days even moreso, as we see nations going to war against nations, and terrible disasters all around the world. We might well be inclined to be fearful. However, Jesus reassures us as we read further. He does not say that we will not struggle or suffer in these days- instead he encourages us not to be afraid! He tells us that when we are persecuted we will have an opportunity to testify to him and his goodness, and that we will stand in God’s wisdom- Jesus himself will give us the words to answer those who persecute us. May we stand firm in the faith that God has given us, gaining courage in the love we have experienced and that we know will carry us through great trials. Amen. How gracious our God is in giving us good things! How much more gracious that we can share these good gifts with others! This week we welcome Sarah from Australian Lutheran World Service to speak at St Paul’s- opening our eyes and hearts to their work overseas. We are thankful for ways we can assist their service- including Walk My Way- a fundraising walk that will be held in Sydney next Saturday 1st of November. Please consider joining the walk or sponsoring a walker if you are unable to attend. In this 75th year of ALWS serving the world we pray for their continued courage, strength and action. Please keep an eye out for their Christmas ‘Gifts of Grace’ program for another opportunity to assist. Support the show…

One of God’s greatest gifts to us is God’s endless creativity and diversity. This week at St Paul’s we celebrate the ways God has given our community many cultures and ways of living. We are all followers of Jesus and live in his love, and this week we will gather with other Lutherans from across Sydney to worship together! Please remember that our service will be at 4pm on Sunday, followed by a shared dinner. If you are joining us it would be wonderful if you could bring a dish from your own cultural background to share! Our Gospel reading reminds us that Jesus commanded us to love one another, thus showing the world that we are his disciples. (John13:34-35) We look forward to this gathering of love and worship. May your week be blessed with the love of Jesus. Amen. This message was written and pre4sented by Pr. Havard Osland of the Norwegian Lutheran Church Aust. Support the show…

Remember the parable of the ten virgins, who didn’t bring extra oil for their lamps while waiting for the bridegroom to arrive? In the middle of the night their lamps were out and they could not greet him! They were excluded from the wedding feast, because they were not prepared. (Matthew 25:1-13) Today’s sermon reminds us we need to be vigilant in other ways too. We hear that God uses people we may not expect to pass on God’s word to us. How closely are you listening to the people God brings into your life? If we are distracted or expect lofty speeches instead of gentle words; if we are too busy keeping up with the culture of the world and do not bend to hear the words of a child, we may miss something God is trying to tell us. We too may be excluded from a great goodness that God wishes to bring into our lives because we did not listen to God’s voice. This week let’s remember God speaks through others to us. May our hearts be peaceful and receptive to God’s voice. Amen. Written and presented by Pr.David Christian. Support the show…

This week at St Paul’s Michael Relf, from ‘Celebrate Messiah’, will share with us some of his stories of God’s goodness through faith. Our faith in Jesus is a gift freely bestowed by the Holy Spirit- let’s remember this week to be grateful for that gift! This week St Paul’s is holding a ‘Sharing Sunday’. Our focus is on the great gift of community that God gives us. We know that God’s plan for humanity is to live in close relationship with God and with each other. This week we are learning a little more about our Christian family here in Sydney- finding out people’s unique talents or the things they love to do. We are hoping there might be some surprises! Getting to know one another better builds relationship and helps us to see the face of God more clearly in those around us. How can you get to know someone in your neighbourhood better? See if you can be curious about those God brings into your spaces- perhaps you’ll find someone who loves an activity or hobby you do! May God bless all of your interactions this week. This week we remember that ‘Heaven celebrates over us’! We know how easy it is to step away from God. The results of this are all around us in the world today. However, we also know that God never leaves us, and that Jesus walks beside us, gently calling us back towards Him whenever we stray. The Bible reminds us that when we repent (literally, ‘to turn back’) all of Heaven rejoices and God welcomes us with open arms. What a beautiful picture! Just as in the words of ‘Amazing Grace’ we are lost, then found; our hearts long to return to the presence of their Creator and Saviour. Let’s thank God for His never-ending love for us! One of the things we learn very quickly in life is that food is powerful. Over the centuries, food has been a political tool used as an effective means of power and control. Revolutions have been drafted and policies written on napkins at the table. Negotiations have been conducted, deals brokered, and lives affected by what has been agreed to at the table. The table is not only the place where relationships are built, but where power games are played, influence is exercised and socioeconomic hierarchy is kept in balance. Jesus is confronted by some of these power games at the table today and flips them on their head as he teaches us what it means to sit in a place of humility. When it comes to living our lives on mission, it’s also a lesson that will serve the Gospel well. Presented b7 Pr. Mark Schultz, Mission Assistant to LCA Bishop. Support the show…

It is a pleasure to return to St Pauls this week to lead you in worship and explore something that is foundation to the Christian faith and life: Generous Living. Generosity can have a huge impact on people. As I watched Spotlight last Sunday with the story of Danny Abdallah not just meeting Samuel Davidson, the man who killed his children in gaol, but also sharing forgiveness and prayers together. You could see how Danny’s intentional forgiveness had an impact on not just Samuel but also the reporter Michael Usher. And the truth is generosity is foundational to our Christian life. It begins with God’s generosity to you, me and everyone we know. And as part of our service on Sunday we will also explore why being generous towards others is so helpful in our lives. He reminds us that the life of a Christian is one that reflects Jesus- we are to live as a ‘walking, talking, breathing, acting image of God.’ The word ‘acting’ in this case does not mean ‘pretending’, or ‘making believe’, but fully engaging in the struggles of this world and each other to bring God’s love and peace into our communities. This week’s Gospel reading Luke 12:32-40 reminds us that we must keep our eyes on Jesus, for Jesus is our true treasure. Jesus’ words to us are compelling- we do not know when He will return, and when He does we must not be found distracted, or wandering away from His love. As humans we are often tempted to worry more about the things we have, or wish to accumulate, than about the goodness of eternal life that awaits us in Jesus. Let’s take time this week to re-focus and simplify our thoughts, knowing that if we have Jesus at the center of our lives we will always be upheld and strengthened in living. Amen. Our sermon this week reflects the message of our Ecclesiastes reading- Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23 that true wealth cannot be found in the work and struggles of this life, but only in the joy of knowing Jesus. Many recent world events show us clearly that humanity is ‘out of alignment’ with God’s visions of peace, hope and love. We continue to strive but find no lasting peace in our possessions; in fact, even our ‘toil’ is buying us less than it once did. What a clear indication that we are ‘off track’! May we, this week, focus our ‘striving’ on spending time in God’s Word- quietening our hearts and finding true rest with Jesus. Amen. The message was presented by Pr. Ray Pace Support the show…

When reading through this week’s Scriptures I noted the explanation below our Luke passage in my bible. The author writes beautifully about Jesus teaching us to pray. “The pattern for prayer that Jesus gives his disciples is short on our wants and big on God’s wants. Half of what Jesus tells us to do in prayer is worship God, keep him holy, and ask that his kingdom and his will take shape, not ours. God the Father looms large. For us, it is enough that we get what we need for spiritual and physical sustenance, and that we ground our days in asking for and receiving forgiveness, as well as calling for freedom from evil and all that pulls us towards wrong. It is a very bare-bones sort of prayer compared to many of the ways we pray today.” (Murray Andrew Pura, in ‘The Life With God Bible’ NRSV-Haper Collins 2005) Let’s keep our prayers simple this week- more about God and less about ourselves. God is indeed the Holy One. Amen his message was written and presented by Pr. Havard Osland of the Norwegian Lutheran Church Aust. Support the show…

This week we hear the story of Mary and Martha, and their different approaches to having Jesus visit. This is a familiar story to many of us, and at times I’m sure we have seen ourselves as either the frustrated Martha or the quiet, listening Mary. Linking this story with the second reading from Colossians, Colossians 1:15- 28 Pastor Mike Semmler gives us a message of hope: reminding us that whether we think we are doing the ‘right’ thing, or whether we are aware we are not a peace with others and ourselves- God is with us. From the moment of the world’s creation God is and has been at the centre of that creation. As a part of God’s creation we have the fullness of God living in us. Go this week into God’s world, knowing that God is within you. Allow God to bring joy and thankfulness to and through you. Amen. The message was presented by Rev. Dr. Mike Semmler past bishop of LCA. “Go and do likewise.” These are the final words of our Gospel reading this week (Luke 10:25-37). Jesus is speaking about the Samaritan’s actions in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. He could also say this of his own actions. This week God reminds us that we have received mercy from God through Jesus so that we can pass this mercy and love on to others. Sometimes that’s easy, isn’t it? When your child does well at school and comes home with an award it’s easy to shower them with love. But life’s not always joyful, and we’re not always surrounded by those we already care about. This is where Jesus’ words become the truest expression of ‘Go and do likewise.’ Jesus asks us to be HIS love, and HIS mercy all through our lives- with those we meet as strangers and with those we spend most of our time around. Just as Jesus gave everything he had to shower us with God’s mercy and love, so should we truly reflect God’s gifts to those we meet. This week, take time to ask yourself- “How can I do likewise?” The sermon was prepared by LCA and read by John Mickin. Support the show…

This week our second reading is Galatians 6:1-16. Paul’s words to the church invite attention- ‘So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.’ (v9) There is a lot around us currently that might make us ‘grow weary’; laying heavy burdens on our hearts, family lives, community and culture- even before we start thinking about ‘doing what is right’. We may be tempted to give up. However, we also know of Jesus’ great invitation to ‘come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’ (Matthew 11:28) This week, let’s step into the peace, rest and deep delight for our soul that Jesus offers. May the words of Isaiah (40:31) be your companion- ‘…those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.’ Amen The sermon was written for LCA and read by Bridgitte Willshire. This week’s Gospel Luke 9:51-62 reminds us that there can be no half-heartedness in following Christ. We know as Christians that God is the ultimate King of the World (apologies to Leonardo De Caprio!) and that God has already triumphed over evil and sin. We are already on the winning team if we are followers of Jesus. However, it doesn’t always FEEL like that, does it? There are times in our lives when the road ahead looks bumpy, when our plans are destabilised- even where God seems to have let us down and we are in big trouble! Today’s Gospel uses the word ‘resolutely’ to describe Jesus setting out for Jerusalem (Luke 9:51 NIV). Jesus calls us to ‘resolutely’ follow him. Regardless of the bumps, muddy puddles and stony ground in our path, our call is to walk towards the King. May your walk this week be faithful and constant. This week we remember that God is our help when we are in tough times. Our sermon reminds us that Elijah, God’s great prophet- a man who had seen God’s great works and healing for himself- also experienced feeling alone and being disappointed in God. When tough times come we lose our sense of perspective and even small things can appear overwhelming. We can get stuck in that feeling and unable to move forward. Elijah was relieved by an angel of God, sent with food and water to revive him. He had to go on a long journey. Later, God spoke to him and set out the next part of the plan for Elijah’s life. Where are you today, in your journey? Are you feeling alone, or disappointed in God? Are you wondering what comes next as you follow God? Wherever you are, be assured today that God is close beside you, wanting to refresh you, listen to you, and give you guidance. Message written for LCA and read by Bridgitte Willshire. This week we celebrate Trinity Sunday. The Triune nature of our God is a mystery ‘more than we can bear’ (John 16:12b) as this week’s Gospel reading says. Have you ever tried to use a tripod and have one leg collapse? Or have you put one on the ground and noticed it wouldn’t stand until you made sure all the legs were the same length? When you get it right you have a really steady camera stand, or easel for your next piece of art. This week we spend time thinking about how God is one and yet three distinct persons. This kind of unity is only poorly imagined through the analogy of the tripod- as humans we cannot fully picture the amazing unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Imagine the closest, most loving relationship you have ever had, and then multiply that by infinity! You will still not know the full love and wholeness the three persons of the Trinity share. May we as God’s church be blessed with growing in that same unity and love. Amen. Presented by Dr. Bruce Arnold. Support the show…

Today we celebrate the gift of Pentecost- when the Holy Spirit was poured out for us. What a wonderful blessing! This is a fantastic reminder that the best gifts often don’t come in boxes and can’t be wrapped in fancy paper. God sent the Holy Spirit to help the disciples and us to share the news of Jesus with the world. This week we look both forward and back- as we examine the ways we see Jesus in God's Word after Easter. Next week we will celebrate Pentecost with a Multicultural Celebration and shared lunch at St Paul's- please come along if you are able! The lunch will offer an opportunity for fellowship and sharing with one another- a chance to see the face of Jesus in those around us. Our Gospel reading Luke 24:44-53 and reading from Acts today mention Jesus showing the disciples who he truly is- the Risen One. Jesus does this by eating with them- showing his disciples he is not a 'ghost' but a true human being, standing beside them. Jesus often shared a meal with others; this enabled him to show his love and compassion, to teach, and even to give us the gift of Holy Communion. We can't 'see' Jesus today, but we can share a meal with one another in faith and love and be pointed once again towards his kingdom. God bless your shared meals this week! This week's Gospel reading John 5:1-9 recounts the story of an invalid Jesus encounters at the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem. In this encounter Jesus asks, 'Do you want to get well?" Jesus does not presume to know what is wanted, but reflects God's goodness in giving us our own 'free will'. God does not pressure creation to come to Him, but instead asks gently and extends His invitations into our lives- invitations towards wholeness, community and care. The invalid responds by listing a range of reasons why he is not already well! Through His compassionate listening Jesus discerns the man's desire for healing and so tells him to 'Get up!". Immediately the man is healed. Here is something we learn- that Jesus invites, and that God gives. We have faith through the Holy Spirit drawing us into trust in a God who truly cares for us, is generous, and does not seek God's own way. God gives each of us the final say in how we choose to live. How can you choose, this week, to reflect your trust in God's generosity? Could you invite someone you know into a deeper conversation, or share generously of your time and resources to improve someone else's wellbeing? This week's focus is on the unity all people have in Christ through the gift of the Holy Spirit. In our Acts reading Acts 11:1-18 we hear that the Holy Spirit helped Peter to understand this. He was encouraged to eat things, and spend time with people, he usually wouldn't. The message God's Holy Spirit was bringing was that God's family would include people from all nations. Peter had to overcome rules he had lived by his whole life, because God's Holy Spirit showed him they were no longer as important as faith and love in Jesus Christ. What 'rules' do you follow today that might not be as important as they seem? How might the Spirit of God shine a different light on them? Can you think of new ways to express your faith and love in Jesus Christ? This week, try to share Jesus' love with someone who might not know Him yet! Happy Mother's Day to all Mothers, Grandmothers, Great-Grandmothers, and those who care for us as a mother would. May God bless you today! Our Gospel reading John 10:22-30 this week reminds us that Jesus is our 'Good Shepherd', and that He will never leave one of His sheep behind. That means you and I! These days there can be a negative connotation around being a 'sheep'. A 'sheep' can be someone who unthinkingly follows trends or others they look up to. Christian life is different. We are conscious that we follow our Shepherd, Jesus. This is something we purposefully remember each day, and it's a blessing because Jesus has claimed us for His own, righteously given by God. We do not follow without reason, or unthinkingly. We desire to be safe in the arms of Jesus, and to obey the ways He has shown us to live. In return, Jesus tells us today that we will never perish, because He knows us. What joy to be fully known and loved by our Creator! May this joy go with you through your week, as you listen to your Shepherd's voice. You could even invite someone else to hear God's Word- and share your favourite Bible verse with them! Today's sermon is from LCA and read by John Mickin. Support the show…

This week's Gospel John 21:1-19 reminds us that we can rely on Jesus to give us all we need. We are blessed to be members of God's family. We are so loved that we are provided with every good thing, just as Jesus blesses His disciples with an extra-large catch of fish, and gives them a freshly-cooked breakfast! Jesus then asks His disciples to carry on the work He has begun. He gives Peter fish, then asks him to 'Feed my sheep.' Three times Jesus repeats His request- feed those I love and that the Father has given me- with your knowledge of the Good News. Thus, we are encouraged to receive from Jesus all we need to live with Him, and also asked to share that goodness and love with others. Who are the 'sheep' in your flock? Are you responsible for a family, or children in a classroom, or your work team? How can you 'feed them'? Jesus asks us to be active workers for His Kingdom in our world. Pray for guidance as to where you can bring God's blessings in your community this week. Then follow Jesus' example- you might find you have a bigger 'catch' of blessings than you can possibly imagine! The message was presented by Pr. Fin Klein of St. Michaels in Harndorf SA.
