Coming off of the most successful season this side of 2009, the Texas Longhorns and Chris Del Conte extended head coach Steve Sarkisian's contract another four years through the 2030 season. It was a big week for the Texas Longhorns, with the volleyball team demolishing the top teams in the B1G Ten on the way to its second-consecutive NCAA Championship. Early in the season, it felt like this Texas team may not have been up to the lofty standards set by previous iterations, but when push came to shove they were elite and proved beyond any doubt that they are the best in the nation. Early Signing Day is also upon us, with Texas finding the next crop of talent to take with them into the SEC. The Texas Longhorns baseball team went to Palo Alto for a Super Regional for a matchup against the Stanford Cardinal for a shot to advance to Omaha for the College World Series. After a come-from-behind win in the opener, the Longhorns couldn't get over the hump and dropped back-to-back games to the Cardinal, ending their season one win shy of Omaha. The loss to the Cardinal officially brings an end to the Longhorns' 2022-23 athletic year, with a second-place finish in the Director's Cup standings behind the aforementioned Cardinal. The strong finish wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of the women's track and field team, turning in yet another national championship headlined by the stellar performance of Julien Alfred. It was a relatively successful week for the Texas Longhorns on the diamond, taking the series from the Kansas Jayhawks and keeping themselves alive for a regular season conference title. Lebarron Johnson had a stellar start on Saturday, helping Texas right the ship after a disastrous season opener on Friday, earning himself Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for his efforts. Texas managed to hold off Kansas on Sunday and get a needed conference win with just one series left on the schedule. The ladies went to Waco and suffered a season-closing sweep at the hands of the Baylor softball team, setting up a conference tournament opener against Texas Tech. The Texas Longhorns put on a show for fans Saturday, capping off spring practice with the annual Orange-White game at Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium. Unlike last year, Texas had the health and depth to field two full squads and a lot to show for their work during the spring session. Perhaps the biggest storylines of the game were the performances of Quinn Ewerrs, who was officially named the starter following the game, and the impressive arm of backup quarterback Maalik Murphy. After struggling a week ago, the Texas Longhorns returned to their winning ways on both diamonds. The baseball team used some come-from-behind dramatics to take care of business against the Kansas State Wildcats, before splitting a midweek series against the Texas State Bobcats. After reaching their first Elite Eight for the first time since 2008, the Texas Longhorns were in a prime position to reach their first Final Four since TJ Ford was on campus, but a late-game meltdown - aided by the officials - sent the Miami Hurricanes to the next round. Following the suspension and eventual firing of Chris Beard, the Longhorns looked shaky for a few games but Rodney Terry managed to right the ship and keep the team running. The Texas Longhorns have the opportunity to do what just five teams before them have been able to do, reach the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament. Standing in their way, are the Xavier Musketeers, who bring one of the more effective offenses left in the tournament. Xavier and head coach Sean Miller are coming off a close win in the opening round over Kennesaw State and a runaway victory over Pittsburgh, and are hoping to improve on the last year of Miller's last stint in Cincinnati with a trip to the Elite Eight. Miller leans heavily on a seven-man rotation weighted heavily toward the starters, with just five players boasting a double-digit scoring average for the year. Guard Souley Boum and forward Zach Freemantle lead the way for the Musketeers, averaging 16.5 and 15.2 points per game respectively, while Freemantle chips in 8.1 rebounds per game. After strong runs in the conference tournaments, with the men bringing home the title, both of the Texas Longhorns basketball teams find themselves preparing for tournament runs that set up for fireworks. For the men, sitting as a No. 2 seed after winning the Big 12 tournament, getting out of the first two rounds for the first time since 2008 means a potential matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies, who drew the No. 7 seed in the same regional. If they can survive a tough matchup against the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Round of 64, then the stakes don't get any higher than a Lone Star Showdown for the rights to go to the second weekend of the tournament. The ladies came up one game short of the conference title but landed the No. 4 seed and the rights to host the first two rounds of the regional at the Moody Center in Austin. With a dominant win over the Kansas State Wildcats, the Texas Longhorns' women's basketball team brought home their first regular-season title since the 2004 season -- just three seasons into the Vic Schaefer era. For their troubles, the Longhorns brought home three of the major conference awards, Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Newcomer of the Year, in addition to three all-conference selections and a spot on the freshman team. They also now have the advantage of being the top seed in the Big 12 tournament, setting them up for a run at the tournament title and potentially a high seed in the NCAA Tournament in a few weeks. What are the expectations for the Longhorns in the postseason and how deep can the run be? After a 3-1 week, the baseball team took the No. 1 LSU Tigers down to the wire, but couldn't put a run across the plate, while the softball team knocked off multiple ranked teams in their weekend tournament as they steadily climb up the rankings themselves. Thanks to their recent shared success, both the Texas men and the Texas women sit atop the Big 12 standings as they head into the final stretch of the regular season. The men played four teams ranked in the top 11 in the country over a span of 10 days, going 2-2 in the stretch. The two wins included a home win over the Baylor Bears and a road win over the Kansas State Wildcats, the only Big 12 team to beat the Longhorns in Austin. With some help from the usual conference chaos, the Longhorns' 8-3 conference record has them currently settled atop the standings as they take on the bottom three teams in their next three games. Vic Schaefer and the Texas women are one of the hottest teams in the country right now, rattling off their sixth-consecutive win with a nine-point win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Austin. Their one-game margin at the top of the conference will likely come under duress sooner rather than later with Iowa State ahead who sits just two games out of first place in the league. The No. 10 Texas Longhorns didn't come out of Knoxville with the result they hoped, struggling to keep up with the post play of Tennessee as a part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The No. 4 team in the country boasts one of the most efficient defenses in modern college basketball and they managed to turn that into points against the Longhorns. However, the men rebounded quickly and kept their spot in the mix at the top of the Big 12 standings, knocking off No. 11 Baylor at home - coming away with a win over the Bears for the first time since 2019. The ladies continued their march through conference play, knocking off the Oklahoma State Cowgirls and Oklahoma Sooners and solidifying their place atop the Big 12 standings as they build momentum heading down the stretch. The Texas Longhorns, both the men and the women, continue to put themselves in solid position to make a run at a conference title as we rapidly approach the back half of conference play. The men, after dropping just their second conference game a week ago to the Iowa State Cyclones, responded with back-to-back wins over West Virginia and Oklahoma State to move into a three-way tie for first place in the conference. Following a weekend non-conference matchup against the Tennessee Volunteers, Texas will face another tough ranked matchup as they welcome the Baylor Bears to the Moody Center. On the ladies' side, Texas picked up its third ranked win in four games, beating the Baylor Bears in Waco for the first time since 2017. Up next for the Longhorns, a matchup that will go a long way in deciding who will take home the women's crown as they welcome No. 14 Oklahoma to the Moody Center. On both the men's and women's sides, the Texas Longhorns had a very successful week on the hardwood. Under interim head coach Rodney Terry, the men's team overcame not one, but two double-digit deficits to improve to 4-1 in conference play and 7-1 since Terry took over the squad. Obviously, come-from-behind wins are not how you want it to happen every time, but making second-half adjustments is a strength for the Longhorns at the start of conference play. We dive in on what we think is causing the slow starts and how Texas manages to spark it in the second half. On the ladies' side, in typical fashion during the Vic Schaefer era, the Longhorns have started to build momentum heading into the grind of conference play, knocking off back-to-back ranked opponents in dominant fashion. That left the game on the arm of Quinn Ewers, who answered the call well and finished with the third-best bowl performance by a quarterback in school history, in spite of his early struggles in the game. It started on the volleyball court where Jerritt Elliott ended the Longhorns' 10-year championship drought, bringing home the NCAA title for the first time since the 2012 season. All-time great Logan Eggleston capped off her incredible college career not only with a national player of the year award but being named the tournament's most outstanding player as she led Texas to a national championship in her final game in Burnt Orange. On the gridiron, Texas welcomed the next generation of athletes to campus as 22 players signed their National Letters of Intent with the Longhorns. The class is highlighted by No. 1 overall player Arch Manning, as well as linebacker Anthony HIll and running back Cedric Baxter, both the top players at their position. The Texas Longhorns nearly fumbled away the game on Saturday, but leaned into their best players and came away with a statement victory over the Baylor Bears to close the regular season and send the seniors off in style. It was fitting that in what is likely the final game at DKR for both Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson, they carried the ball on the final 24 plays of the game, scoring the touchdowns to put the game away in convincing fashion. In the same vein, once again the Texas run defense was stout, giving up just 101 yards to a Bears team that emphasizes the run, forcing the ball into the quarterback's hands. Defensively, the Longhorns held TCU to their season-low scoring and yardage outputs, putting up season-high performances in sacks and scoring the only touchdown for Texas in the contest. The defensive performance was masterful and hopefully can be indicative of things to come for the remaining two games and the future under Pete Kwiatkowski. However, the Longhorns turned in one of the worst defensive performances in recent memory, and one of the worst rushing performances in the history of Texas Longhorns football. The Texas Longhorns went into the second half with a lead against the Oklahoma State Cowboys and again came away with a frustrating loss. On the road in Stillwater, Texas struggled to maintain its discipline and composure in a hostile environment, while the offensive playmakers couldn't seem to get on the same page. Quinn Ewers played his worst game in Burnt Orange, which put a damper on a career day from running back Bijan Robinson. Defensively, Texas managed to get off the field on third downs, but quick turnarounds and a lack of second-half production from the offense put them in a hole they couldn't get out of. So now, as they head in to the bye week, Texas has a lot of questions to answer in the hopes of putting together a strong back quarter of the year and finishing on a high note. The Texas Longhorns' revenge tour continued Saturday, avenging one of the more embarrassing losses from a year ago, a drubbing on the road at the hands of the Iowa State Cyclones. It wasn't the best game from the Texas offense, with quarterback Quinn Ewers struggling to find open receivers but still managing to toss three touchdowns in the win. His efforts were buoyed by the efforts Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson, who literally and figuratively carried the team to a victory on the final drive. For the first time in four years, Texas managed to shut down the Iowa State passing attack, putting the game on the right arm of quarterback Hunter Dekkers, who played well in the loss. Iowa State nearly had the go-ahead touchdown, but Xavier Hutchinson could not come down with the pass. So what does this mean for Texas moving forward? The Texas Longhorns were in need of a solid win and managed to control the game wire-to-wire, coming away with a 38-20 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Longhorns jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first half, thanks in large part to three big passing plays, two from quarterback Hudson Card and one from wide receiver Xavier Worthy. However, Texas is no stranger to first-half leads turning into second-half nightmares, but the Longhorns managed to come out and score the only points of the third quarter, taking a four-score lead into the fourth quarter. Worthy seemingly had the breakout game he was waiting for, adding two receiving touchdowns to his passing score, while tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders did his part with 78 yards and two touchdowns of his own. Now, Texas turns its attention to the Red River Rivalry and a floundering Oklahoma Sooner squad coming off of back-to-back losses. The Texas Longhorns went into Lubbock and in spite of building a halftime lead came away with a 37-34 overtime loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Texas managed to battle back in the first quarter, building a 10-point halftime lead, but the offense’s inability to extend a drive in the second half. Three of the final four drives of the game ended with punts, including a drive that gave Texas Tech the ball back with five minutes left in the game. The defense, who was on the field for nearly 100 plays, was unable to get a stop and the Red Raiders put a field goal through with 21 seconds left on the clock. Texas drove down and tied the game as time expired, but Texas Bijan Robinson fumbled the ball in the first overtime and set Texas Tech up for the game-winning drive. Now, at 2-2 on the year, Texas turns to West Virginia and tries to get back on track in conference play. The Texas Longhorns struggled with the UTSA Roadrunners early, falling behind 17-7 after an onside kick and a trick play that took advantage of a seeming lack of focus early. The Longhorns responded by scoring 17 unanswered points to take a 24-17 lead and never looked back. Texas leaned on its star players in this matchup, with running back Bijan Robinson doing the bulk of the work on the ground for Texas — amassing 183 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Roschon Johnson, who was a spark plug for Texas in the first half, did great work on his own, finishing with 81 yards on 11 carries. Defensively, the Roadrunners found success early completing short passes under the Texas defense, with their receivers capitalizing on space created by the Texas blitzes. Second-half adjustments allowed Texas to clamp down on that, holding UTSA to just three points in the second half. The Texas Longhorns came into the game as double-digit underdogs at home, but the No. 1 team in the country had to depend on its kicker and the Alabama Crimson Tide won it 20-19. Texas played the majority of the game without quarterback Quinn Ewers, who left the game in the first quarter due to an injury. The Longhorns took a 19-16 lead late, but Heisman winner Bryce Young led Alabama on a game-winning drive to close it out. The defense forced six consecutive punts and frustrated the offense for the majority of the game, save for two long drives in the second half. There’s plenty of success to build on moving forward, but there are no moral victories in football. The banged-up Longhorns now have to turn the page and avoid a hangover as they take on a talented UTSA squad that would love for Texas to start the season 1-2. The Texas Longhorns came out and took care of business in the season opener against ULM, cruising to a 52-10 victory to start the season off in the win column. Offensively, the Longhorns' first drive, and quarterback Quinn Ewers' first passes, left a lot to be desired, but after the young signal caller settled in, Texas was able to move the ball well against an outmatched defense. Tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders was one of the biggest highlights of the evening, with the most reception yards by a tight end since Jermichael Finley. Texas also started to hopefully gain some answers on the defensive side of the ball with DeMarvion Overshown and Barryn Sorrell leading the charge in the trenches. The Texas Longhorns were massive favorites over the ULM Warhawks in this one and did what you should do against an outmatched team, cruised to a 52-10 win in the season opener. After a shaky opening possession in which quarterback Quinn Ewers saw his first second-ever pass attempt intercepted, the Longhorns started to roll thanks — in large part to Ewers and his right arm. The freshman finished the game 16/24 for 225 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Ja’Tavion Sanders and Bijan Robinson for scores. Speaking of Robinson, it was a light but productive day for the star running back, finishing his day in the third quarter with 10 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown for his efforts. Perhaps, the defense was the biggest story for Texas, keeping ULM out of the endzone until the fourth quarter when the second and third-string players were in.
