This week, we're doing something a little different. Instead of a conversation, we're sharing something we've been working on for the past year — our new short documentary, 30,000 Monkeys in Our Backyard. It tells the unbelievable true story of how a small town in Georgia became ground zero for a proposed facility that would have housed 30,000 monkeys for laboratory testing — and how a group of everyday people stood up, fought back, and changed the course of their town's future. The film is a story about courage, community, and what happens when people refuse to stay silent. 30,000 Monkeys in Our Backyard premieres November 1st on YouTube — and you can watch it, share it, and take action at speciesunite.com/30000monkeys…

Xin chào and welcome to What About Vietnam. As 2025 draws to a close, I wanted to take a moment to pause — to thank you, to reflect on this journey that began back in 2020, and to share a few lasting lessons for travellers heading to Vietnam. What started during lockdown as a way to “travel through stories” has grown into more than 100 episodes shared across 70 countries. Together we’ve explored Vietnam’s hidden gems, met local legends, and uncovered stories far beyond the guidebooks and Instagram. To my guests — you give this show its heartbeat. Thank you. To my listeners — your messages, feedback and travel plan requests continue to keep me inspired every step of the way. I couldn’t do this without you. Now, after three incredible years, it feels right to take a short pause — to breathe, to rediscover Vietnam with fresh eyes, and to think about what What About Vietnam might become in 2026. While the podcast takes a short rest, I will continue to create privately guided journeys throughout Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Check out some of the testimonials and request your trip plan including all services as in domestic trains, flights, accommodation and experiences fully tailor made to you and your budget .;- https://www.whataboutvietnam.com/request-form In this final episode, I share five key lessons drawn from my real life experiences— and lived truths about travelling well in Vietnam: Stay curious – Vietnam will surprise you every time. Travel slow – the magic happens in the quiet moments. Connect deeply – even a simple Xin chào can open unexpected doors. Support local – your choices help communities thrive. Keep dreaming – Vietnam’s story, like life, is always unfolding. So whether you’re planning your first trip or returning for more, I hope these insights help you experience Vietnam with a little more heart and a lot more wonder. Ever heard of travellers being stopped at check-in because their Vietnam visa didn’t match their flight? Sadly, it happens more often than you’d think. In this no-holds-barred episode of the What About Vietnam podcast, I take you step by step through the visa maze — from exemptions to e-visas — so you can avoid the heartbreak of being denied boarding before your holiday even begins. With new rules for 2025, e-visas are now open to all nationalities , and exemptions have been extended. Sounds simple, right? Well, the devil is in the details. A single typo or misunderstanding can cost you precious time and money. That’s why I’ve put this episode together: to give you clear guidance, in plain English, so you know exactly what to do. In this episode, I become the devil of detail explaining in simple language;- The latest visa exemption updates for 2025 (the official Vietnam Immigration link for the full country list below). The two types of e-visas available and which one best suits your trip. Common pitfalls that stop travellers at the airport — and how to avoid them. How to prepare your application with the right documents and photos. The timeline for applying, and why leaving it too late is a risky move. What “visa runs” really mean Real-life stories from travellers who got caught out — and how it was resolved I have tried to cover all kinds of instances to help make sure you “Get it right”, first go. No sweat! Check out the page on the website for more details - https://www.whataboutvietnam.com/visa-info And if all of this still feels like a bit too much — that’s exactly where I can help. Through What About Vietnam travel services, I can arrange fast-track arrivals, curated itineraries, and personal guidance with fixes if needed, so feel free to reach out to me at whataboutvietnam@gmail.com To check your country status as either being exempt or requiring an Evisa ( including making your application go to https://evisa.gov.vn/ The best way to connect with me is not via text, it is through the website www.whataboutvietnam.com website and email. Ever wondered what it’s like to set foot in Vietnam for the first time? Is the hype real? Or is it more like overload and no one is really talking about it. In this episode of What About Vietnam , I’m joined by Meghann – one half of the travel blogging duo behind The Grahlife – as she shares her and her husband Zach’s first impressions of Vietnam during their adventure in March 2025. From landing in Hanoi to trekking the famous Son Doong Cave, Meghann walks us through the culture shock, the sensory overload, and the unexpected joys that came with their first time in the country. We don’t just cover the obvious stuff, we talk about: Navigating the infamous traffic (Zach famously declared: "I was born for this!" after only his second street-crossing), Ordering local dishes with curiosity and courage as Meghann is Celiac. Experiencing the kindness and compassion of the Vietnamese people, unexpected! And reflecting on the powerful legacy of Vietnam’s war history and its place in the modern-day tourist landscape. Plus the best take away souvenirs you’d never think of! This is a candid, light hearted, and insightful conversation about the magic of those first encounters – the planning that went right, and the planning that didn't, the sights, the flavours, the energy – that make Vietnam such an unforgettable destination. Whether you're seeking inspiration for your next big adventure or simply want to arrive prepared, this episode offers honest insights to help you travel smarter and more confidently. 🎧 Listen now on your favourite podcast platform and don’t forget to check out the The Grah Life to follow Meghan and Zach’s journey’s and their adventure discovering Son Doong. Let’s get real about travel planning to Vietnam. If you're heading to Vietnam, there’s one big decision you’ll need to make early on: Should you join a packaged group tour… or plan your own trip? Do you map it out yourself—or get expert help? This isn’t a simple yes-or-no answer. It’s one of the most personal choices you’ll make in your travel planning—and one that can completely shape how you experience Vietnam. In this episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on both options, sharing the honest pros and cons, and helping you figure out which style fits you best. No fluff, no sales pitch—just personal and professional insights from years of experience as both a traveller and a travel advisor to Vietnam. Because I consider this decision one of the biggest you’ll make in setting the tone for your trip, I break down these key elements: The structure and convenience of group tours—and when they shine The freedom and deeper connection that individually planned travel can offer Why group tours can sometimes feel like a blur of bucket-list stops The trade-offs of a tightly scheduled itinerary versus one you design yourself (or with guidance) Real talk: what people loved (and didn’t) about both styles If you follow this show, you’ll know from other episodes: the best trips happen when your travel style matches who you are. Whether that’s with a group or through your own custom plan—choose what fits you. I truly believe that if you give Vietnam the thought it deserves, it will give you everything you’re looking for—and more. If you've ever felt put off by wellness retreats that seem more like boot camps — all strict schedules, silent meals, and mandatory sunrise yoga — then this episode is for you. Join me as I broadcast from the tranquil grounds of Namia River Retreat in Hoi An, where wellness takes on a much more inclusive, luxurious, and deeply personal meaning. In this episode, I sit down with Michelle Ford , GM of Namia and CEO of Lumina Wellbeing, and Dien Pham , Director of Sales and a holistic wellness practitioner in her own right. Together, we unpack what wellness travel really looks like in Vietnam — and why it's gaining serious momentum. We talk: Why Hoi An is fast becoming a wellness destination (think: beach TRX, vitamin C IV drips, traditional herbal therapy, and no-fuss spa treatments that actually relax you) The evolving post-pandemic demand for retreats that prioritise well-being without the rigidity What makes Namia’s approach to wellness more about "Inclusive wellness" and less about rules Why travellers are sleeping better here — and not just because of the mattresses And how Vietnam is carving out its own path in wellness tourism, distinct from its Southeast Asian neighbours Whether you’re curious about #wellness travel, craving a proper reset, or just want to explore Vietnam in a way that nourishes your mind and body — this episode has something for you. Tune in now to hear how Vietnam is redefining retreat life — without the hard edges. Hoi An continues to enchant—and in 2025, it feels overflowing, more layered, and more revealing than ever. That’s why I’ve chosen to revisit one of my most loved conversations on the show—this time with a fresh perspective, and a few heartfelt reflections from my recent trip. You’ll hear from the delightful Sharon Sweeney, a long-time visitor to Hoi An who once co-created the popular website and map guide HoiAnNow (now retired). Sharon still returns regularly, drawn—as so many of us are—by the town’s old-world charm and enduring spirit. As Hoi An grows in popularity, it’s evolving in ways that bring both beauty and complexity. With more international travellers comes more diversity, yes—but also more crowds, rising prices, and the ongoing challenge of preserving tradition in a fast-changing world. In this updated intro, I reflect on my ow personal observations, what’s new, what’s shifting, and what still stops me in my tracks and gives me great joy. This episode isn’t only about ticking 10 boxes ( as per the original show back in 2021 - S2-07 )—it’s about finding your rhythm in Hoi An, one authentic experience at a time. Stay curious, stay open—and let’s rediscover the heart of Hoi An together. The best way to connect with me is not via text, it is through the website www.whataboutvietnam.com website and email. In this episode of What About Vietnam , we uncover a hidden gem: Vietnam’s rising reputation as a hotspot for affordable, high-quality dental and cosmetic procedures. My co-host Kelley shares her transformative facelift journey with a trusted hospital in Saigon, which combines expert dental and cosmetic care in one “one-stop shop.” So to speak! Kelley’s uplifting experience goes beyond surgery—it’s a unique way to pair self-care with a holiday! With her personal tips and stories (and a few giggles along the way), you’ll learn the do’s and don’ts of medical tourism and why Vietnam is fast becoming a top destination in this space. With Kelley’s personal story, along with another major dental patient’s experience during the same visit, we aim to share why, in our opinion, the Worldwide Dental and Beauty Hospital in Saigon stands out for its exceptional standards of care—and why we’re excited to serve as their introduction agency. It's a "no holds barred" episode packed with insights that will make you see Vietnam in a whole new light. Plus, join our exclusive Facelifts and Dental Vietnam Facebook Group for more real-life stories and support. In this episode we delve into the vibrant yet often misunderstood city of Hanoi. While it is the capital, it often serves more as a transit point for travellers to visit other places like Halong Bay, Ninh Binh and Sapa. This is an opportunity to see Hanoi in a whole new light. I hope you enjoy this insightful conversation with my close associate, Ha (Hannah), a proud Hanoian with deep roots in the city. Spoiler Alert: In the show we don’t walk the well-trodden tourist paths of Hanoi. We go below the surface to uncover its Christian background: Coffee culture, and the history behind the collective living quarters of Hanoi and how the Doi Moi period has shaped Hanoi and essentially the Vietnam you are visiting today. 00:05:31 - Update on Typhoon Yagi 00:12:00 - Discovering Hanoi Below the Surface 00:18:19 - Catholic Heritage 00:22:15 - Coffee Culture 00:34:03 - Collective Living Quarters in Hanoi 00:36:26 - The Doi Moi Period Tours Churches tour, Please email me whataboutvietnam@gmail.com Yagi – Appeals Links UNICEF - Blue Dragon Link - The Collective living quarters Half a million coffee shops https://en.vietnamplus.vn/vietnam-home-to-half-a-million-coffee-shops-post292030.vnp Vietnam rises from deep povert y Book - The Bridge Generation of Việt Nam (Spanning Wartime to Boomtime) Dau Thuy Ha & Nancy K Napier Other Hanoi Episodes - S3-E9, S4-E9 , S4-E10, Thank you to J ack Soloman Photography for his contribution.
