There’s only so much you can do in a week – or, according to Oliver Burkeman, in the roughly 4,000 weeks the average human lives. Oliver is a journalist and author of the books Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, Meditations for Mortals, and the newsletter “The Imperfectionist.” Chris and Oliver discuss the paradox of why change can only occur once we accept that we might not be able to change. Oliver also shares how life’s mishaps can become our most treasured memories and why sharing your imperfections is an act of generosity. Send us a text I got the chance to walk and fish an amazing piece of water at Mottisfont on the famous Test in Hampshire. Mike and Neil tell me about their policy towards the water and what they have done to improve the habitat for the wildlife and fish there. It is a really interesting story and as they get ready to offer the fishing on a day ticket basis in 2026 I hear about how they plan to make it available for a wide range of people to use and enjoy at a price that suits just about every pocket. Mike and Neil are good people doing something that is a little ground-breaking for this part of the world and I applaud them for it. The mayfly had started hatching and we managed to find a few rising trout. Learn more about the fishing below. https://www.wessexrt.org.uk/ChalkStreamExperience.html…

Send us a text Episode 289 - Stalking Carp I'm just back from Italy, the weather in Devon is bright and warm and I had been thinking of going to my local river but with it being so warm I thought I'd try something a little different. I decided to see if I could target carp with a fly in clear water. My plan was to spot a fish, cover it and if I was lucky, even catch it. I took the mic with me and talked as the day unfolded. It turned out to be a day of a lot of hard yards and a heap of walking. I checked and I walked 9 miles searching out either a cruising or tailing fish. With sun on my back and walking in shallow, clear water it was easy to draw parallels with wading a bonefish flat. It was equally as exciting!…

Send us a text Episode 288 - Marble Trout in the Italian Mountains I packed my rods, headed to the airport and flew out to Italy on a Fly Culture trip. The destination was Friuli and the target fish was marble trout. None of the group had caught them before but under the careful eye of Vito and his team of guides we felt the chances were stacked in our favour. We fished a wide variety of water that you'll hear about but we all realised these events turn out to be about more than just the fish. This episode is about fishing, food and good company.…

Send us a text Episode 286 - Damian Robinson - Home Water I catch up with Damian to fish a stretch of water that is a real challenge to fish with some of the spookiest fish I have ever seen. I learn about how Damian approaches this sort of water and what he has learnt from fishing here. The term technical fishing is, at times, used a little too freely but this is without a doubt somewhere that tests your skill to the limit. Send us a text Episode 285 - Fishing, Gatherings and Good People I'm back on the road once more and this time I'm in Derbyshire to attend one of our gatherings at Mallon and Green in Bakewell. I managed to tag on some fishing too and fish the Derwent with Geoff Hadley and bump into a few friends along the way as we fish late into the night. The next morning, I attend the annual event that takes place in Bakewell to celebrate the anniversary of the river Wye switching to the dry fly only rule after James Ogden showed how devastating this method of fishing could be. I speak with Jan Hobot who makes the ceremonial cast on the river and learn a little bit about this tradition that has taken place for 160 years. Later in the day, I head over to Mallon and Green, a fly shop, that over the last 3 years has become the hub for the local fishing community. I speak with some of the people attending about fishing who share some interesting stories. This a snapshot into fly fishing on many levels that I hope you'll enjoy listening to.…

Send us a text Episode 276 - The Tweed Salmon Festival This was the chance for me to hop in the van, pass over some rivers I've dreamed about and make my way to Scotland for The Tweed Salmon Festival. I catch up with friends old and new, talking with them about fishing, what it means to them as they walk around the show. This is a new show run by good people that, at its heart, is trying to encourage young people into fishing. I so enjoyed seeing so many children catching their first fish. I also talk to tackle companies and the good people from Patagonia who alongside supporting the event, had their Worn Wear repair service that was available not just for their own brand but any brand where you could get a favourite piece of clothing repaired. We had good food, a few drinks and music from Colin Macleod who sang for us Saturday evening. It doesn't matter if you don't salmon fish, this is about the people. I'm hoping you'll enjoy it.
