×Episode 310 - Special Guests: Noel Lawrence and Burke Roberts Cinema is pretty close to being dead. We've hit a stalemate where multiplexes only play caped crusader films, the streamers love their ripped-from-the-headlines docuserials, and network television is a vast wasteland of mundane competition reality shows. Lots of vacuous, hollow paeans to escapism and vanity. Warhol was not wrong, every asshole is getting their fifteen minutes. Somewhere in this miasma of dreck exists the blistering heart of the pure, the transfixed, the recalcitrant filmmaker feverishly concocting pieces of art in direct opposition to the moribund mainstream. Utilizing the short form, these artists showcase more demonstrative depth of depraved deliciousness in less than a quarter of the experience than their overstuffed audience-baiting counterparts. The Slamdance Film Festival itself has always been the thorn in the side of Sundance. It's the bastard stepchild the predominant festival never asked for but reluctantly shares in the same time and place. As Slamdance secured its rightful place in film festival legitimacy it was always looking for new ways to demonstrate their outsider existence. In steps our two guests; filmmakers Noel Lawrence and Burke Roberts. Ten years ago, Burke and Noel, two very different humans, shared a love of film and art of an unnatural order and somehow convinced those at Slamdance to start their own short film series. They called it the Department of Anarchy and within that span of time it became the most popular and raucous event of the whole festival each year screening the vanguard of modern short form cinema. So, pull down that bottle of Jame-o, have your pack of American Spirit Yellows ready, chew on some shrooms, top it off with Special K and molly and inhale the history of the Department of Anarchy with our very special guests Burke and Noel. Episode 309 - Special Guest: John Pirruccello The Buzzards are big fans of the acting profession and we're especially fond of character actors...the best kind. It's even better when those people are even cooler in real life. Take the career of John Pirruccello. He started out doing voiceover work for TV and radio commercials, video games, cartoons and movies. He leads a weekly improv group while also performing in sketch comedies, theater and television and movie roles. He also did stand-up all around Los Angeles. On stage he was in Horton Foote's (Best Screenplay Oscars for To Kill a Mockingbird, Tender Mercies) play Harrison, Texas . Davdi Mamet caught that and went on to cast him in many roles including in his HBO movie Phil Spector . He also worked with Mamet's daughter, Clara Mamet, in a play and a film. He was in the third season of David Lynch's Showtime series "Twin Peaks" and in the hit HBO sitcoms "Barry" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and was in the bigbudget feature film Godzilla vs. Kong. He has also had an extraordinary life outside of the entertainment world. He was a cab driver, has a degree in Italian, was a military brat as a youngster and has lived in many places including San Antonio, TX, Northern Virginian, Southern Vermont, Amherst, MA, Siena, Italy, San Francisco and Los Angeles. One of the more important jobs he does is volunteer to help children with special needs. He has a unique approach from his acting training that allows young people to be heard, be confident and be focused. So, wipe off your grease paint, take a hot bath, wrap yourself in some warm pajamas and relax with a glass of wine while Nate, George and Roger get to hear the skinny on all things acting, Mamet, teaching children, and what happens when you hang out with Helen Mirren on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. 58:43Episode 308 - Special Guests: The Buzzards On this special evergreen episode, The Buzzards play a game that's been around for some time. BBC Radio 4 have had a game called "Desert Island Discs" since 1942, where they ask various celebrities, athletes, politicians and pundits to imagine being stranded on an deserted island and they can only keep with them the following items; five pieces of music, a book and a luxury item. They already get to have the Complete Works of Shakespeare and the Bible. The rest is all theirs to imagine. Well. The Buzzards do it almost like that. But we've already read all the Shakespeare we need and we ain't got no time for anything biblical. You see, on our island, we have just time for the simple pleasures...cannabis, booze and, well, golf. The whole team is here tonight with Nate Buzzard leading the charge. 1:02:29Welcome to the one year anniversary of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. This is our 46th episode and we're happy that it drops on the very same day as our first. What do you think you know about mushrooms? You know there are mushrooms you can eat, mushrooms that make you high and mushrooms that can kill you. What do you know about the medicinal properties of mushrooms? Chaga mushrooms help aging, inflammation, and lowering cholesterol. Lion's Mane helps with cognition, memory and concentration. Reishi helps with sleep, anxiety, depression and focus. There is a Pacific-Northwest company that features prominently in mushroom cultivation and creating various products including tinctures, sprays, gummies and raw. Their name is Hyphae Wellness ( www.gethyphae.com ) and they are a leading non-pharmaceutically sponsored manufacturer and supplier of all of these wonderful products and MORE... Hyphae Wellness has a sister company called TAO Gardens ( www.taogardens.com ), a sustainable, holistic, no-till marijuana grower. As it says, they also cultivate, manufacture and supply various strains of high-grade cannabis. Now, put the two together...and you have a wellness kit that delivers medicinal mushrooms with a solid buzz to help ease you into whatever direction your body and mind want to go. What got our immediate attention is that the mushroom helps the cannabis act quicker in gummies, from what is usually 45 minutes to five minutes. Hell yes. No more eating seven weed cookies because "you don't feel it yet," after you ate the first two. That'll teach you. So, finish your creamy mushroom pasta, swallow a few gummies, kick your feet up and take a listen as we talk with COO and Co-Founder of both Hyphae Wellness and TAO Gardens, Mr. Nick Ciufo, as he talks about all things mushrooms and weed, about how his company does it better, the unique delivery system they have in place and where they plan on going in the future. 1:10:11Putin just invaded Ukraine. It's confounding, frightening, a dick move and utter bullshit. The Buzzards want to get to the bottom of this. We need help because the media out there has so many conflicting messages it's difficult to figure out just what in the holy fuck is going on. When in doubt, we reach out to our most trusted sources. In this case, we have someone that is directly involved with the conflict and has the most precise and stone cold take on it. All of us are on this episode but we let one source lay it all out. We just listen. And so should you. Adrian Bonenberger returns for his second appearance on FDB. He is an expert on the dynamics of the armed conflict levied on Ukraine by Vladimir Putin. He is a retired US Army Officer that has served in a variety of capacities and has led soldiers in combat on two deployments. Additionally, he has served as Field Coordinator for the Ukraine Center for Civilians in Conflict as well as a news editor at The Ukraine Business Journal. This is the definitive discussion on this subject matter. He also mentions others we should listen to including Nolan Peterson (@nolanwpeterson), Vladislov Davidson (The Odessa Review), Christopher Miller (@ChristopherJM), Jack Crosby (Rolling Stone), Matt Taibbi (@matttaibbi), Gary Brecher & Mark Ames (War Nerd) and Svetlana Alexievich (@SAlexievich). 1:11:07On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, the Buzzards rip it up with venerable character actor and musician James Duval who has had one helluva career. His career starts with what would become a lifelong cinematic relationship. His work with filmmaker Gregg Araki has spawned four feature films, one MTV pilot and one television series including TOTALLY F***ED UP, THE DOOM GENERATION, NOWHERE, KABOOM, "This Is How the World Ends" and "Now Apocalypse". Jimmy would go on to a career that spans over 30 years and over 175 credits. Some of his other most known films include early trangressive masterwork MOD FUCK EXPLOSION, INDEPENDENCE DAY (as Randy Quaid's son), Doug Liman's GO, the GONE IN 60 SECONDS remake (with Nic Cage and Angelina Jolie), SLC PUNK and it's sequel PUNK'S DEAD: SLC PUNK 2, the Sundance horror film MAY, he won an award for the film THE DOE BOY, SUSHI GIRL, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, and, most recently, I, CHALLENGER (see episode 302!). There is one movie that he can never quite shake. It was a small Sundance film that rolled out to deathly box office numbers but over time has steadily become one of the most well-known cult films of all time. That, of course, is DONNIE DARKO where he plays Frank the Rabbit. Then there is the music side of Jimmy. As a guitarist he led a band called Antoneus Maximus & The Nuthouze Band and played in another called Gene Wilder with fellow filmmakers Brian McGuire and Bret Roberts. He associated strongly with jangle pop band The Jazz Butcher and worked with David J from Bauhaus and Love & Rockets. So get out your yoga mat, light some incense, drink some herbal tea as we venture into the career, loves and passions, and overall positive and energetic state of mind of one James Duval on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. Award-winning photographer Brent Broza shares the impact that growing up within the twin countercultures of hardcore punk and surfing had on him and helped shape his future career as an artist. Brent started by photographing his friends in bands and his friends surfing. Eventually he would get paid for it and would go on to photograph globally recognized musicians such as Jack Johnson, Descendents, Pennywise, Blink-182 and artists Shepard Fairey and Greg "Craola" Simkins just to name a few. In 2016, Brent won the World Surf League’s “Biggest Paddle Award” by capturing the photo of Aaron Gold’s Guinness World Record wave of 63 feet at Jaws in Maui. 1:19:11We are all driven by the notion of fate. Some believe that fate is inevitable, while others believe that fate is what you make of it. And then there are those who believe that fate is given a push by luck. Some seem to have all the luck while others were born under the proverbial bad sign. On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, the Buzzards chat it up with two people that made a movie about the pursuit of good luck and the extremes of which the central character will go to achieve it. I, CHALLENGER is a stoner comedy with flourishes of horror, thriller, sci-fi, absurdism and a lil bit of romance. It stars James Duval (THE DOOM GENERATION, DONNIE DARKO, SLC PUNK) as Sid, a man-child who plays video games all day and sells weed, and is about to be evicted. In desperation, he gets his newfound gaming buddy Logan (played by Coy Stewart) to help him bury himself with a livestream video for 24 hours. It's an idea he saw online that was seemingly successful for some Russians. Let's just say, nothing really goes as planned. Co-starring Tina Majorino (WATERWORLD, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE), ground-breaking rapper MC Lyte and legendary comic Margaret Cho, the film is a high-wire act, full of surprises and plenty of shenanigans. You can find the film on all VOD platforms including Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu, etc. We are lucky to have Writer-Director Paul Boyd and Co-Writer Kara Scobey Brown with us on this episode. Paul is a heralded music video and commercial director who has worked with such artists as Shania Twain, INXS, Blind Melon, Sting, Tina Turner, Lionel Richie, Backstreet Boys, deadmau5, Bryan Adams, Jamiroquai, Lenny Kravitz, Seal, Digable Planets, just to name a few. He directed his first feature film, 2008's VICIOUS CIRCLE, a tragic punk Latino love story set in Venice, California. The film won Best Picture at 2008 HBO New York International Latino Film Festival, the Audience Award at the 2008 Orlando International Film Festival and Best Director at the 2009 Downtown Film Festival - Los Angeles. Kara is a seasoned veteran in many facets of film and television production including writing and production managing for Lady Gaga for four years. That includes many of her music videos and television specials, such as "A Very Gaga Thanksgiving" with Tony Bennett. With her production company Electric Soup she produced the series "The Greatest Event in Television History" for Adult Swim with Paul Rudd, Kathryn Hahn, Jon Hamm, Adam Scott, Amy Poehler. She also produced the docuseries "Sex on//" for HBO. So roll up a fatty, light 'er up and take a stroll with Kara, Paul and the Buzzards as we talk about the making of I, CHALLENGER, their respective careers, the soon to be released film WE ARE GATHERED HERE TODAY made during the pandemic, a little bit of music and the films we all love. 1:36:44Year end specials are for the birds. Remember those holiday special shows in the 70s and 80s when networks like ABC or CBS would throw their B-list actors from their shitty sitcoms together in amazingly awful skits, toss in a few "hip" up-and-coming musicians like Captain & Tennille or Pepsi-disco-cocaine boy Leif Garrett as they sing the standard holiday crap and have the whole affair be an excuse to try and salvage the sagging ratings of moribund TV shows that were written in crayon on a napkin in the first place? Well, welcome to the FDB version of that! Except we take our cue from that old standard bearer of holiday tradition, Dickens's "A Christmas Carol". Roger as Christmas Past eulogizes the various folks we lost throughout the year; George as Christmas Present talks cold turkey about current events and Pete as Christmas Future dreamily envisions the future of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. Leading the show like a Dickensian boss is, of course, Nate, who stands in as our very own abused and underpaid Bob Cratchit. This episode is not especially nostalgic (leave that claptrap for Norman Rockwell's pandering to the American people to sell more Coca-Cola) but we do give an expletive-laden, free-form frivolity to the festivities (think BAD SANTA) as we wax on about the year 2021, the guests and episodes we've had on and all of the artwork Nate has put into it. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, this special unit was tasked with responding to several high profile incidents associated with Anthrax and Ricin. The DC sniper was also an active threat during Alexander's time in the U.S. capital region, causing additional levels of stress and uncertainty amongst the military community. On this episode on FDB, our guest reflects on his time growing up on various military bases throughout the U.S. including Utah, California and Georgia. We also discuss the heavy influence of 1980s motion pictures such as Platoon and Full Metal Jacket on GenX. Alexander goes into detail about his new book and other current political events that continue to evolve. 59:53"The Simpsons" is probably the most famous American television series in history. It's the cultural landmark equivalent to STAR WARS, Mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer," and Michael Jackson's "Thriller." It's had 33 seasons. Only news shows, NFL programming, soap operas and "The Tonight Show" have been on longer. The show was developed by the legendary Matt Groening along with Oscar-winning filmmaker James L. Brooks and the multi-talented Sam Simon (who passed away in 2015 and his contributions to the world are sorely missed). Along the way they hired many fantastic writers, producers and showrunners including Conan O'Brien, John Swartzwelder, Jon Vitti, Al Jean, etal. Somewhere along the way they received a script called "Marge Gets a Job" from up and coming writers Josh Weinstein and Bill Oakley. They were hired as permanent writers and would be producers and showrunners for the seventh and eighth seasons and continue on for a total of six seasons. Weinstein would win three Emmys for his efforts. Weinstein and Oakley would go on to develop the problematic "Mission Hill" and be consulting producers on hit show "Futurama" and producers on "The Mullets." They went their separate ways and Weinstein went back to "Futurama," winning another Emmy. He went on to create and write for the shows "Strange Hill High" and "Disenchantment." It was an era where such preoccupations were not met with wide enthusiasm despite occasional mainstream successes. This, of course, has all changed. To define grunge, for example, is to say that it was the synthesis of metal & punk with both noise and classic rock thrown in for good measure. Hollywood has gone all in on horror and especially films starring people in tights. The kids that grew up throughout the 70s and 80s have now become the tastemakers and almost everything has become mainstream (even bands like The Velvet Underground and Mötörhead). On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, the Buzzards get down with an artist that defines the best combination of all of those influences, Rich Ragsdale. As a director he's made the horror films THE CURSE OF EL CHARRO, GHOST HOUSE and the upcoming THE LONG NIGHT and music videos for Avicii & Lenny Kravitz, Sean Lennon and Les Claypool, Chevelle, Theory of a Deadman and countless others. He's composed scores for most of his films and films EIGHT-LEGGED FREAKS, BIG RIVER MAN and THE GIANT MECHANICAL MAN and TV series' "The King of Queens," "According to Jim" and "Freakshow." His recent spate of cartoons revolving around the last four years in politics takes their grotesque cue from famous EC horror comics from the 50s. Rich is the definition of the modern Renaissance Man influenced by John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, Richard Corbin, Jack Davis, Krzysztof Penderecki, Bernard Herrmann and Iron Maiden. The Buzzards go down the proverbial rabbit hole of all these topics and more as Rich Ragsdale gives insight into his childhood and influences that helped shape an artist that just keeps growing with each new avenue he pursues. So, turn out the lights, pour a mug of hard cider and take a walk down memory lane with the current reign of the new prince of darkness, Rich Ragsdale. 56:08The Buzzards go for round three about the business of marijuana. This episode we get frontline reportage back from our cannabis correspondents and Buzzards-at-Large Brian Jones and Patrick Ryder. They covered the MJBizCon in Las Vegas and have quite a bit to fill in as to the bright future marijuana has in its steamrolling legalization throughout the individual states of America (it's gonna take some doing to federalize it...as you'll hear). The convention has the look and feel of any other convention but the aroma sure is better and the participants are a whole other crowd than the usual sharks in suits (there were those but also think t-shirts, shorts and flip flops). Brian and Pat give us the latest and greatest news, most of it very encouraging with a bit of pessimism sprinkled throughout. If you wanna know just where weed is heading, then this is your one stop dispensary of information. So, get that pre-roll sample ready, fire it up and pass the dutchie 'pon the left hand side as you take another toke on the FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. 1:06:27Emily Dickinson wrote a poem about recapturing the spark she once held for something that she truly desired. On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ we honor that spirit by interviewing two people that have reinvented themselves and are now on the journey of their lives, reigniting that spark they both held years ago as artists and world travelers. Teresa Coates ( www.teresacoates.com ) is a world class sewing expert and teacher. She is so good that she now has her own streaming show called "Sew Together Tuesday" where she demonstrates how to put together a specific pattern each episode, ala Bob Ross! She is not your grandmother's knitter, however. She is more Anthony Bourdain than Martha Stewart, or the offspring of their unholy alliance. She does museum-worthy pieces as much as she demos baby blankets. Jason "Hawke" Hamilton ( www.hawkeartist.com ) is an artist that has been working in so many applications he's stopped counting. Painter, sculptor, digital artist, filmmaker, pretty much anything that requires his hands, he's getting dirty. He also produces huge live events for major corporate advertisers and film and television industry awards shows. Hawke rocks a mohawk and just so happens to be Teresa's partner in crime. While living together during the pandemic, their restless spirits shaped a new future for them. Hawke began to film the episodes for Teresa and together they worked on making it more professional and streamlined. This grew into an ambitious pitch about taking the show on the road to the company Teresa worked for, Shannon Fabrics. And they said yes. Next thing you know they had a brand new RV with her show and name wrapped around it. They hit the road and traveled to many places in America where they were greeted with fanfare, in some places, near rock stardom. We are fortunate to catch up with them as they are on their break before they hit the road for good. The Buzzards dive into red states, Elon Musk, outlaw country, and everything you always wanted to know about stitching, sewing, knitting and quilting but thought it was gonna be...old. Well, not only do these two jumpstart on a new exciting adventure they also make sewing damn sexy, fun and vibrant. Teresa even gives a real lesson in long term care for a quilt piece from a question by a special guest, Aunt Ruthanne Dodge! So, put down the knitting needles, stick the pin in the etui (crossword puzzles really paid off), grab a frosty beverage from the fridge and listen to yet another scintillating episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. 1:00:43On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, we are just a two-Buzzard squad with George and Roger while Pete takes a u-turn down the newborn baby highway. We're up to the task, though, because this guest today is a true blue, dyed-in-the-wool Generation X variation of the Ramblin' Man. We are excited to have Eric Kramak in the house, coming to us live from Amman, Jordan, our first guest to talk to us from outside of the U.S. Eric works for IMPACT Initiatives, a humanitarian non-profit organization that does research and analysis into those areas of the world that have been significantly impacted by war, disaster, famine, disease, etc., in order to single out what it is those hotspots require for immediate assistance. How Eric arrived here is a story unto itself that includes stints in the Air Force during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a period of mountaineering and intensive world traveling, and two tours of duty in college, one successful and one not so successful. So, get out your world map, grab a few freshies, and take a listen to Eric Kramak because he just might have something for you to learn here on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. 1:04:02On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, we are lucky to have with us one of the most exciting young voices to pop up on our radar that we can hardly contain ourselves. She is Alyx Ruibal, who has become a social media personality and uses her platform for a myriad of significant reasons. She is striving to become a professional dancer and demonstrates the many techniques she's developed over the years. She is a burgeoning actress who recently wrapped her first feature film, a family drama called HELLBENT ON BOOGIE about a young woman with autism that wants to become a professional dancer (not unlike herself) but lives at home with her domineering mother in a trailer park until her wayward brother comes home and chaos ensues. She also uses it to promote social awareness, representation and activism for people with autism. Roger and Pete are joined by Nate, the Buzzard artiste, who is filling co-hosting duties on this episode for George due mainly to the fact that Nate is a veteran special education teacher with twenty years in the field. Alyx has been coming to terms with her autism all of her life. Being non-verbal as a small child she has developed into a very exciting, insightful, witty and extraordinarily intelligent woman. She went to Rutgers for dance. Nate has never quite met anyone like her in his years of teaching. Alyx comes armed and she teaches these old Buzzards a thing or two that they thought they knew already, those know-it-alls. So, put on your dance shoes, get that cell phone out, take a few pics and vids for your IG or TikTok, put that phone away, and fire up another exciting episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. 1:06:08We here at FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ use the word "mother" a lot - usually in a derogatory context and in conjunction with another celebrated epithet. In this episode, we get our comeuppance and dutifully and respectfully pay heed to the very cradle of our own existence, motherhood itself. And we will not be alone. Pete opens our show but has to forego the actual interview due to his newfound status of fatherhood. In his stead, we have Pete's sister, Maryann Snow, as George and Roger's co-host. A mother of three herself, she provides particular insight that would escape the usual Buzzards' grasp. Our two special guests are Lori Miller and Gail Munsch. Lori is a mother of five children (a girl and four boys) and Gail has a pair of twin boys. All of the mothers on the episode discuss the differences in raising babies, the importance of schedules (especially when you have five children or twins), about throwing away the goads of advice you receive as a new parent and what makes it all so damn special in the first place. This is the closest the Buzzards come to their Oprah episode (and that's not being facetious - the Fatherhood episode...well, that was more..."us"). There is real gold here as Gail, Lori and co-host Maryann speak in direct terms on what becoming a mother means as well as the inevitable emotional weight behind it (for good and bad). So, get your baby swaddled, pop that beer that you've been waiting for all day and take a load off for one very deserved hour while the Buzzards commiserate with you about what you're going through right at this moment. 1:15:51It's been three entire decades since the celebrated year of 1991 in regards to rock and roll music has passed. Here in the U.S., it was a hangover of sorts from a ten year stretch of excess and irreverence - symbolized by the financially successful spate of inane and bloated hair metal bands - fondly known as the 1980s. Back in ’91 the world was witnessing the wind down of the Persian Gulf War, enjoying OJ Simpson’s reprisal of the beloved law man Nordberg in the cinematic sequel to THE NAKED GUN alongside Leslie Nielsen, and crawling into the capabilities of Al Gore’s genius invention of the internet. Furthermore, 1991 also saw the release of an exceptionally large quantity of popular music recordings. A few of these very well received recordings include "Use Your Illusion I and II" by Guns N’ Roses, "Out of Time" by R.E.M., "Diamonds and Pearls" by Prince & The New Power Generation, "Death Certificate" by Ice Cube, "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine, "Achtung Baby" by U2, "Badmotorfinger" by Soundgarden, "Emotions" by Mariah Carey, "Trompe le Monde" by Pixies and Metallica’s self-titled black album, just to name a few. The impressive list goes on and on. There are many observers and musical academics who consider 1991 just as meaningful as another absurdly historical year - 1967 - with its seminal recordings by The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Doors, Pink Floyd and The Velvet Underground. It is truly remarkable that three of 1991’s most enduring recordings were released on the exact same day; Tuesday September 24, 1991. On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, each Buzzard examines them in great detail: Roger pays no "Nevermind" by Nirvana, George educates us on "The Low End Theory" by A Tribe Called Quest, and Pete conjures up some "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Featured Buzzard-at-Large Kevin Colgan colors up the commentary by waxing poetic on his nostalgic take of each album. So please, lock the door behind you, adjust the towel, take your seat and politely hit the fan’s setting to "on." You’re walking in on a purely Gen X session of FDB.…

58:40It’s been said a woman becomes a mother the moment she learns she’s pregnant. Rivaled by no system known to MALE, the female reproductive system (complete with a vast array of inherent natural selective nurture traits triggered upon conception), is an amazing and infinitely fascinating vessel of life creating and life sustaining machinery. Long the subject of fine art, prose, anthropologic study and scientific inquiry; the process of becoming a mother, or “matrescence,” is a neurobiological experience so profoundly divine, sitting here — attempting description with a pair of male thumbs seems almost akin to taking an Etch a Sketch stab at Picasso’s Guernica. But if you think defining motherhood is hard… what of fatherhood? In contrast to a newborn’s immediate, bodily intimacy with the mother — what can we say about dear old Dad? I mean what can we really say about a relationship that begins with inevitable distance? Whereas mothers begin from a position of intimacy and must consciously choose to reject it, fathers begin from a position of distance and must consciously choose to claim their role as father — a non essential one in the Wild Kingdom. We’re the only male animals arrogant enough to try that. Eight years ago last week, both George and Nate Buzzard became fathers for the very first time. In less than a week, Pete Buzzard will do the same. With a mere combined 16 years to the day in the field of fatherhood, these early inning dads try and break it down for the rookie call up. Hilarity ensues. Five Dollar Buzz presents: Episode 208 - What to Expect When You’re Expecting - Non Regents Deluxe Dad Edition - Or, Mansplaining Fatherhood.…

On this episode, we discuss the world of cannabis hedge funds with the leader of the finance industry Sean Stiefel, the CEO of Navy Capital ( navycapital.com ) and returning guest Brian D. Jones, who is the Executive Vice President of QuadScore Insurance Services. Navy Capital was founded in 2016 with Sean becoming its CEO in 2019. Prior to founding Navy Capital, Seanl was a research analyst and trader for Northwoods Capital Management Partners, a TMT-focused global long/short hedge fund. He had previously served as an associate within an equity long/short fund at Millennium Partners, and he began his career as an equities trading analyst for Barclays Capital. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. As mentioned before, Brian D. Jones joined QuadScore Insurance Services as the Executive Vice President in 2021. He contributes a wealth of diverse insurance industry experience. His depth of knowledge in handling a broad array of complex operational, regulatory, underwriting, management, and actuarial matters also added value to his previous roles at Hartford Life, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Hartford Investment Management Company, and AXA XL, a division of AXA. Most recently, he was on the front lines of the cannabis insurance market from its infancy in 2017 through its maturation. He developed an underwriting strategy for the cannabis account portfolio and kept his team up to date on changes in the market. Mr. Jones developed a thorough distribution channel of brokers who work with cannabis clients, and he regularly meets with executive-level stakeholders to design solutions and innovative ways to insure their risks. We are at the forefront of turning marijuana into an industry as respectable as any produce you'd find in your average grocery store. 1:13:29"Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make." - Bram Stoker The Buzzards go goth on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, as we speak with acclaimed horror author Steven Van Patten and talk about all things vampires, werewolves and the shape of horror to come. Van Patten is the author of the trilogy Brookwater's Curse - Volume1, Volume 2 and Volume 3: Extinction Agenda - about a former Georgian plantation slave named Christian Brookwater who becomes a powerful vampire. He becomes an agent for a secret vampire law enforcement who has to keep those damn werewolves in check among other supernatural creatures of mayhem. Brookwater also can't seem to curb his murderous impulses when confronted by obnoxious racists, much to his agency's chagrin. The hero's journey continues as vampire politics, civil war and love triangles abound. Van Patten has also written a two-book series, Killer Genius: She Kills Because She Cares and Killer Genius 2: Attack of the Gym Rats , about a woman named, appropriately enough, Kendra the Killer Genius. She is a super intelligent serial killer with a conscience and only kills those she conceives to be racist, sexist, abusive or dangerously criminal. In the sequel she takes on sexual predators and the Russian mob. He also wrote a children's novel called Rudy's Night Out about a young boy who sneaks out at night to a party and discovers a scary world out there. Will his father - a man with a secret and the last name Brookwater...hmmm - find him in time?! You'll just have to read it to find out for yourself! He is also a co-author of two anthology series - Hell at the Way Station and Hell at Brooklyn Tea . The former he co-wrote with acclaimed author Marc L. Abbott and the latter with Abbott and Kirk Johnson. They are stories of horror centered around Brooklyn, where Van Patten grew up, and a framing device includes the authors themselves as participants in the supernatural shenanigans. Hell at the Way Station won two African-American Literary Awards including Best Anthology and Best in Science Fiction. Van Patten also won an award for Best Independent Publisher for his Laughing Black Vampire Productions publishing company. Van Patten is a member of the New York Chapter of the Horror Writers Association as well as a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). In his spare time he has done some stage managing for several television shows. He also wrote some television episodes for a series called "Viral Vignettes." The Buzzards get all nerded out with Mr. Van Patten as they talk about his books, his publishing company, his fascination with horror, horror movies and the mighty borough of Brooklyn. So, concoct your elixir of absinthe with a sugar cube and some water, turn out the lights and get ready to be thoroughly entranced by the new prince of darkness. 1:03:59The provenance of video games was always the domain of the misunderstood misfits. Old school coin-operated stand up terminals were located in smokey dive-bar back rooms or seedy shopping malls. The early in-home entertainment consoles were first adopted by the propeller head and pocket protector set. As those gaming systems became more advanced and realistic, the introverted and ostracized members of youth became the standard bearers of the online gaming communities. The Boomer establishment has a rich history of being at odds with the video game industry. Early 1980s fears of Japanese manufacturing supremacy, placing societal violence's blame on gaming's cartoonish pistol play, inaccurately correlating health issues to screen time, as well as dismissing a dynamic and innovative sector as a passing fad. You name it, Boomer's did everything but self-reflect. What's more - just this week China's official news outlet — published a lengthy analysis that used terms such as "opium" and "electronic drug" to describe the harmful effects of gaming on children. "It turns out 'spiritual opium' has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry," the article read. "Insiders warn: watch out for the harm of online games." As in so many other instances - the Boomers and Commies got it wrong. Again. GenX knew very early that video games were none of the above, but rather a wild frontier of entertainment, education and camaraderie. The Millennials grabbed the baton and went sprinting farther down the path to take gaming to a place not even the most enthusiastic GenXer could dream possible. One of those thought leaders is our guest on this episode of FBD. Will Hershey (twitter: @maybebullish) is the visionary CEO and cofounder of Roundhill Investments with offices in NYC and SF. Roundhill believes that e-sports and video games are the future of live media, sports and entertainment. Will and the Buzzards swap old school video game stories, discuss investing in this sector of the economy is no longer a fringe frontier exercise, as well as the future of the metaverse and sports gambling. So set the control paddle down, unplug the headset and kill the screen. Roll up the dank and pour a drink. 1:12:50On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, the Buzzards mix it up with legendary character actor Mark Boone Junior, or just "Boone" as he prefers to be called. Boone's had a weird and storied career, from his improvisational cabaret beginnings with Steve Buscemi to early No Wave work with underground directors like Eric Mitchell (THE WAY IT IS OR EURYDICE IN THE AVENUES, UNDERGROUND, U.S.A.) and Lizzie Borden (BORN IN FLAMES) to indie darlings like LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN, SLAVES OF NEW YORK, Buscemi's masterpiece TREES LOUNGE (among several films that Buscemi directed), and PETE SMALLS IS DEAD. Hollywood came a-callin' and he caught a big role in Sam Raimi's western THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, did two for David Fincher, SEVEN and THE GAME, two for Christopher Nolan, MEMENTO and BATMAN BEGINS. He was in ROSEWOOD, THE THIN RED LINE, GET CARTER, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, FROZEN RIVER and so many more. He has also been in quite a bit of television. The list includes "The Equalizer," "Law & Order," "Quantum Leap," "Seinfeld," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Flaked," "The Last Man on Earth" and recently in "The Mandalorian." The list goes on. However, it is his role as Bobby Munson on "Sons of Anarchy" for the full seven seasons that has gotten him the most recognition. The blessing and the curse of a high profile television show is brought to bear. We get the full monty on our man Boone, from his childhood and time playing collegiate and professional soccer to the early beginnings in NYC with Buscemi and their experience with Martin Scorsese, Peter Gabriel, Roseanna Arquette and Nick Nolte on the film NEW YORK STORIES to the Fincher/Nolan days to "SOA" to now. Boone is great fun to talk with and he is both reverential and candid in equal measure. And through that research he authored the famed non-fiction book DMT: The Spirit Molecule which was subsequently turned into a documentary with the same name featuring Joe Rogan as the narrator (whose podcast he has also been on). He has also written two other novels, the non-fiction book DMT and the Soul of Prophecy - in which he compares Hebrew prophecy with DMT experiences - and the fictional novel Joseph Levy Escapes Death. On this episode we have the great doctor explain all things DMT and other psychedelics such as LSD and ketamine, you know, the good stuff. We gonna get psycho-fuckin'-delic, baby!
