Hilde Mosse comes from one of the wealthiest families in Berlin and stands to inherit an enormous fortune. But she longs for something more meaningful than the luxurious lifestyle her family provides. So Hilde decides to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. As the Nazis take power in Germany and the Mosse family is forced to flee, Dr. Hilde Mosse lands in New York having nearly lost everything.. She finds her calling treating the mental health of Black youth – and the symptoms of a racist system. In addition to photographs, school records, and correspondence spanning Hilde Mosse’s entire lifetime, the Mosse Family Collection in the LBI Archives includes the diaries she kept between 1928 and 1934, from the ages of 16-22. Hilde’s papers are just part of the extensive holdings related to the Mosse Family at LBI. Learn more at lbi.org/hilde . The entire team at Antica Productions and Leo Baeck Institute is deeply saddened by the passing of our Executive Producer, Bernie Blum. Suicide and euthanasia raise the question, do we have the right to choose to die? It was once thought that those who choose death commit mortal sin as their last act and therefore cannot be saved. In this episode we explore the morality of suicide and euthanasia, we address the question of salvation after suicide or euthanasia, and finish with an interview with Monica, who walked through the pain of watching her terminally ill father suffer and eventually pass away (May he Rest In Peace). Pornography use in the 21st century is being consumed in record numbers, but is this a good thing? Is porn helping or hindering our social interactions? Is porn helping or hindering the way we view the opposite sex? This episode explores the Catholic Church’s teaching on the morality of pornography as well as a discussion on the impact of porn use including an interview with a reformed porn user. The Catholic Church makes the distinction between who we are compared with what we do, even if they are related. This is an important distinction when we explore the Church’s teaching on same sex attraction. In this episode we examine the Church’s teaching, and then interview a same-sex attracted Catholic on her experience of same sex orientation in light of Catholic teaching. Corrections: At 18:56 I quote CCC 2538, it should be CCC 2358* (The quote spoken is correct) At 20:12 I quote CCC 2539, it should be CCC 2359* (The quote spoken is correct) Website: catholicchristianity.org Instagram: @catholicchristianityorg Twitter: @CatholicXtian FB: @catholicchristianityorg Youtube: @catholicchristianity8776…
As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, every person matters, even those who are not yet born. This episode explores the Church’s teaching on unwanted pregnancy and then we interview Dr Joanna Howe, a leading pro-life advocate, on her thoughts on why it is worth advocating for the rights of the unborn. The Catholic Church is famous for its condemnation of artificial contraception. Here we take a deep dive into the very controversial encyclical, Humanae Vitae, to see what the Church actually teaches and why. We then interview a married couple to listen to their experience of applying this teaching to their own marriage. The Catholic Church has a somewhat counter-cultural perspective of sexual morality. This episode explores why the Church invites us to wait until marriage to have sex, and then we interview a recently married couple on their experience of following the Church’s teaching. This episode explores the question of the value of human life. There are various philosophies of the human person that typically are informed by the cognitive ability of humanity compared with other species. Is cognitive ability the determining factor for human value, and if so, is an animal with a high IQ more valuable than someone with very low IQ? This episode explores the question: does morality change? In a world where many think that what is right and wrong is an individual choice, we examine the concept of moral relativism and how it helps us to understand those with differing perspectives, but nonetheless does not change the reality of what is objectively right and wrong.
