1:53:23This week I examine the city of Washington D.C., and it's connection with the national pastime. A connection with the game, that goes back to the first game in the District's recorded history of July 2, 1860. It was the shared home of one of the most legendary Negro National League teams, as well as owning a complicated history with Major League Baseball, that features three different franchises and five stadiums, in their over 100 year relationship with one another. Also I will profile four of the stadiums that have dominated the baseball landscape in the city; Swampoodle Grounds, American League Park, RFK Stadium and their current home Nationals Park #WashingtonNationals #WashingtonSenators #SwampoodleGrounds #GriffithStadium #AmericanLeaguePark #RFKStadium #NationalsPark #WashingtonDC #ArtGorman #ColonelJones #WilliamHowardTaft #JohnKennedy #WashingtonPotomacs #WalterJohnson #BaltimorePastimes ##TheGreatWesternTour…

1:21:14Rickey Henderson used the ultimate combination of power and speed to break numerous Major League records during his career. But what solidifies his place in baseball history was his unbridled passion to his craft and the game. He is the all-time stolen base king in the history of baseball. The greatest lead-off hitter the game has known and the most prolific run scorer to ever grace the diamond. There is only one Rickey Henderson, and this week I profile his life and baseball journey. #RickeyHenderson #OaklandTechnicalHighSchool #TomTreblehorn #BillyMartin #DaveHenderson #RonnieLott #CarneyLandsford #OaklandAthletics #NewYorkYankees #NewYorkMets #SanDiegoPadres #AnaheimAngels #BostonRedsox #SeattleMariners #BostonRedSox #LosAngelesDodgers #BobbieHenderson…
This week we profile the baseball journey of right-handed power pitcher Curt Schilling who's 3,116 career strikeouts is the 17th most ever in baseball history. He is the only pitcher to ever win a World Series game for three different teams. His 11-2 postseason win/loss record is the highest winning percentage, for pitchers in the game's history, for any pitcher with more than 10 appearances in the post. His 5-0 record and 1.37 ERA in elimination games, and his 3-0 record and 1.12 ERA in series clinching games, establishes him as one of the most clutch performers to ever lace them up. Even with all these aclompishments, Schilling finds himself on the outside looking in, on a Hall Of Fame induction. A casualty of the " cancel culture wars" being fought in a polarized America. #CurtSchilling #BaltimoreOrioles #HoustonAstros #PhiladelphiaPhillies #ArizonaDiamondbacks #BostonRedSox #BloodySockGame…
Our profile this week will be on Roger Clemens. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner, and eleven-time All Star, who would rewrite the modern age record books, by establishing himself as the preeminant power arm of his generation. Only to find himself exiled from the very game he dominated, as whispers and suspicions of steroid-use cloud his impressive resume and all of his accomplishments. #RogerClemens #Rocket #DaytonOhio #SugarlandTexas #SpringWoodsHighSchool #SanJacintoJUniorCollege #UniversityOfTexasAustin #BostonRedSox #GregKosc #TorontoBlueJays #NewYorkYankees #HoustonAstros #RandyClemens #BrianMcNamee #WayneGrahm #CliffGustafason #JohnMcNamera #CitoGaston #TerryCooney…
This week. Notorius November rolls on, as I take this month to focus on some of baseball's more controversial players, when I detail the life and career of baseball's home run king Barry Bonds. He had a stellar career, made a mountain of money, and holds many records in baseball, but his own actions and words have made him a pariah in the game, perhaps never to attain the Hall of Fame status that he craves and that his career numbers suggest he has earned. He was the most feared hitter since Babe Ruth and he is far and away, the best speed/power combo player to ever live. His connection to the PED era of baseball in the 1990's and early 2000's have stained his legacy, while many other of his contemporaries, with similar suspicions have gone on to be inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame. A sad ending for a career that promised so much, and that promise was delivered. #BarryBonds #BobbyBonds #PatriciaBonds #WillieMays #SanFranciscoGiants #PittsburghPirates #ArizonaStateUniversity #JuniperroSerraHighSchool #JimLeyland #AndyVanSlyke #BobbyBonilla #JeffKent #MarkMcGwire #SammySosa #GregAnderson #BALCO #VictorConte #BackwardsKPod #JakeRobinson #LetsTalkBaseballPodcastNetwork #BKP…
The curtain has been drawn on the 2024 MLB season, with the Texas Rangers abdicating their throne in favor of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who beat the New York Yankees in five games, to claim the crown of baseball champion in this year's Fall Classic. Jake opens the show with an analytical breakdown of what happened during the history making championship victory, and what to look forward to in the upcoming Hot Stove offseason. Notorious November kicks off with a month of BKP profile-bios of some of baseball's more controversial topics. Thise week we start the month off, with a posthumous dig into the life and career of baseball's all-time HIt KIng, the exiled pariah Pete Rose. No player in any sport ever maximized as much production from their god-given skills. A pugnacious catalyst who played in more winning games than any other player in the history of the game, and he played each one of them with Game Seven of the World Series intensity. He was the rare player who could blow through an 162 game season, with a do or die reckless abandon in each contest. Unfortunately, the same attributes that endeared him to millions of fans, for his style of play, would be the same characteristics that precipitated his fall from grace, when the icon violates baseball's cardinal sin of betting on the game, while serving as the manager for the Cincinnati Reds. #PeterEdwardRose #AndersonFerryOhio #RayFosse #HarryFrancisRose #LaverneBloebaumRose #WesternHillsHighSchool #BuddyBlebaum #AsaBrooks #TonyPerez #DonBlassingame #CharlieHustle #SparkyAnderson #BigRedMachine #EricShow #JohnDowd #DowdReport #BartGiamantti…
This week we do a deep tissue autopsy on the life and career of the "Big Unit" Randy Johson. As a youngster in the game, his tall stature created problems and setbacks to his immense potential and development. After some sage advice from Strikeout king Nolan Ryan, and after the tragic death of his father, Randy changes his approach to the game, and becomes one of the most dominant left-handed pitchers in the history of the game. In a 22 season career, The "Big Unit" would lead his league in strikeouts nine times, earn four ERA titles, record 100 complete games with 37 shutouts, finish with over 300 career wins and be the starting pitcher in four All Star games. #RandyJohnson #TheBigUnit #WalnurCreekCalifornia #LivermoreHighSchool #AtlantaBraves #USCTrojans #MarkMcGwire #RodDedeaux #MontrealExpos #JoeKerrigan #RickWilliams #SeattleMariners #MarkLangston #HoustonAstros #ArizonaDiamondbacks #CurtSchilling #NewYorkYankees #SanFranciscoGiants #JakeRobinson #LetsTalkBaseballPodcastNetwork #BackwardsKPod…

1:34:00For over 100 years, the cries of baseball fever have echoed across the San Diego County region in Southern California. From Oceanside to Otay, from the neighborhood sandlots to the engineering marvel, that is PETCO Park. Baseball has been an integral part of the San Diego sports conscious, that stretches all the way back to May of 1871, when the game is introduced to the city, with it's first recorded game, out in the town plaza. While most of today's San Diegans know the major league Padres best, since their inception into the Major Leagues in 1969, there are over 60 years of rich baseball heritage, from their minor league predecessor, the Padres of the Pacific Coast League. This week, i examine the city's timultuous love affair with the sport, and the humble roots of this connection. In the long and storied history of baseball, there have been a collection of street corners that have become synonymous with the throwback cribs that have claimed domain there. At the corner of Michigan and Trumbull once stood the iconic Tigers Stadium. 21st and Lehigh was the home of Shibe Park, You had the corner of Findlay and Western, where the Reds played at Crosley Field, and on the south side of Chicago, at the corner of 35th and Shields, stood Comiskey Park. Today that tradititon still holds firm with Clark and Addison housing the Cubs at Wrigley. To the old school St. Louis baseball fan, the corner of Grand and Dodier can be added to that list. This week we will examine the rise and fall of the structure that stood there, and housed two St. Louis MLB teams from 1860 to 1963, Sportsman Park. A plot of land, on the north side of the city, where the game takes it's roots, and fans of the game witness amazing chapters in the baseball story. #SportsmanPark #StLouis #StLouisBrowns #StLouisCardinals #GrandAvenue #DodierStreet #CharlesComiskey #AugustSolari #AugustBusch #BrownStockings #ChrisVanDerAhe #Perfectos #StanMusial #SamBreadon #UrbanShocker…

1:27:26This week. BKP chronicles the baseball life and career of the sport's first great manager. Cornelius MacGillicuddy, better known in the MLB universe as Connie Mack, spent 71 years in organized baseball, from 1884 to 1955 as a bare-handed catcher, a manager, a front office executive and an owner. He carried himself with a quier dignity, and he commanded respect from friends and rivals alike. Along the way through his journey, he would evolve along with the game, constructiong one of the greatest "Dead Ball Era" teams, with his dynastic Philadelphia A's, during the 1910's, as well as a second Philly dynasty with one of the more dominant "Live Ball" squads, at the end of the Roaring 20's. Statuesque, stately and slim, you could always find the "Tall Tactician" in a high starched collar business suit and tie. with a rolled up scorecard in his hand, standing on the dugout steps, observing his chess pieces out on the diamond. This week we do a deep character profile bio on the Wizard, Osborne Earl Smith. Ozzie Smith was one of the few players who could beat you with just his glove, and phenomenal defensive feats. The 15 time All Star, winner of 13 consecutive Gold Gloves, is widely regarded as the greatest defensive shortstop ever, if not the greatest defender at any position, in the history of the game. Granted, it's never been the center of the mid-west baseball universe, and never will, considering Chicago's close proximity. But the last quarter of the 19th century, and the first half of the 20th century, often found the city of Milwaukee, in the thick of major league baseball, but never quite able to sustain a big-league club, for the long term. The enduring history of baseball is filled with accomplishments that strain credulity, and force us to rethink the limits of human potential. Whether it's Babe Ruth calling his shot in the 1932 World Series vs the Cubs, or Reggie Jackson hitting three homeruns on three swings in the 1977 World Series, or Nolan Ryan tossing no-hitters in his 40's. But on June 12th, 1970, Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis, does the impossible when he throws a no-hitter, while under the influence of LSD. For those of you who have taken acid before, please explain to the people around you, who have never done it, how hard that is to do. Tom Seaver was one of the greatest right-handed power pitchers, the game has ever known. He won 311 games, for four major league clubs, most notably for the Mets, whom he led from last place laughingstocks to an "Amazin" and improbable world championship in 1969. Seaver at work, was a mechanical picture of kinetic grace. He had a smooth, tight windup, and a stride so long and explosive off the rubber, that his right knee often grazed the dirt. He was a fearless leader, always chomping at the bit, to sully his right knee in the next contest. What can you say about Tom Seaver? In one word, he was "Terrific." This week, BKP does a deep dive into the life and career, of this iconic baseball immortal. #TomTerrific #TheFranchise #TomSeaver #NewYorkMets #CincinnatiReds #ChicagoWhiteSox #BostonRedSox #GilHodges #SparkyAnderson #JerryGrote #CleonJones #DickYoung #RodDedeaux #USCTrojans #AtlantaBraves #SolleyHemus #EarlWeaver #HankAaron #NolanRyan #NancySeaver #SeaverVineyards #BigRedMachine…
The world of Major League Baseball, has seen more than it's share of of controversies and scandals. Among the most significant of these, was the collusion of team owners during the 1980's. A period of time that impacted the sport's integrity and it's players. This week we dive into the deep waters, of the intricate history of this collusion unraveling; how it unfolded, and the lasting impact it had on the National Pastime. #KirkGibson #AndreDawson #TimRaines #JackMorris #PeterUeberroth #LeeMcPhail #AndyMcPhail #JerryReinsdorf #BudSelig #HankPeters #GeorgeSteinbrenner #TedTurner #RonGuidry #CarltonFisk #LanceParrish #RichGedman #MarvinMiller #DonaldFehr #BillLaJoie #ThomasRoberts #GeorgeNicolau…
Paul Molitor's path to baseball immortality took many strange twists and turns along the way. Hamstrung by a series of injuries early in his career, and a horrific cocaine addiction, Molitor developed a reputation for fragility, and at one time, it appeared as though his career was cursed and snake-bitten. But the soft-spoken native from St. Paul, Minnesota would persevere to achieve numerous milestones and baseball accolades. The seven-time All Star, with the smooth right-handed swing, outstanding base running skills, finished his career with a .306 average, and became just the fifth player in baseball history to collect 3.000 hits and swipe 500 bags. #PaulMolitor #MilwaukeeBrewers #TorontoBlueJays #MinnesotaTwins #RobinYount #DaveWinfield #JackMorris #GeorgeBamberger #HarveyKuenn #CecilCooper #GormanThomas #MikeFlanagan #CretinHighSchool #UniversityOfMinnesota #DickSeibert #DeeFondy #SalBando #BuckRodgers #JimGantner…
For 50 years, 1939-1989, Red Sox Nation had three successive Hall Of Famers, guarding the Green Monster of Fenway out in left-field. Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice. With the Splendid Splinter's story already in our collection, and Jim Rice on the horizon, this week we take a dive into the life and career, of the man New Englanders would affectionately call Yaz. The two things the Polish immigrant Yastrzemski family knows, is growing potatos and playing baseball. Under the omnipresent and watchful tutelage of his father and uncles, Yaz would rise from the farm to Cooperstown, with a dominant 23 year baseball career for the Red Sox, as one of the greatest all-around left-fielders who ever lived. #CarlYastrzemski #BostonRedSox #NotreDame #RayGarland #TedWilliams #LakeRonkonkoma #FrankNekola #TomYawkey #FenwayPark #RaleighCapitals #MinneapolisMillers #JakeRobinson #CharlieGunz #BackwardsKPod #NewEngland…
This week, we examine the life and career, of the forgotten Hall Of Famer, the greatest southpaw pitcher of the dead-ball era, Eddie Plank. From the humble beginnings of a farming family, born just twelve years after the bloody conclusion of the Civi War battle, bearing his hometown name. Plank would develop his game, on the battleground farms of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, before moving on to the major leagues, and becoming a major cog, for the dynastic championship machine, Philadelphia A's, at the turn of the 20th century, under the watchful managerial eye, of the legendary Connie Mack. His 326 wins are the third most in baseball history, by a lefthand pitcher, behind only Warren Spahn and Steve Carlton. His 69 shutouts are still the standard for port-siders, and will likely never be broken, considering how pitchers are used today, in the modern game. From Gettysburg to the Hall Of Fame pantheon in Cooperstown, NY, this is the incredible baseball journey of Gettysburg Eddie. #EddiePlank #GettysburgEddie #GettysburgPennsylvania #GoodIntent #RobertMajor #MorrisMusselman ##FrankForeman #GettysburgCollege #ConnieMack #PhiladelphiaAthletics #ChiefBender #RubeWaddell #WalterJohnson #JackChesbro #ChristyMattewson #JackCoombes #StLouisBrowns #FederalLeague…
A tragic situation exist, when virtue doesn't triumph, and it is felt when our hero is nobler, than the forces that conspire against him and ultimately destroy him. This week we will look at the amazing career and life of Ken Griffey Jr. A player who would usher in the 1990's brand of major league baseball, and become the decade's face of the National Pastime. He had everything. The physical genetics, he inherited from his father; the confidence, arrogance and swagger. He transcended race, and he had a smile you could see from the last row of the upper deck at the Kingdome. He seemed surely destined to go down as one of, if not the greatest player ever, before numerous injuries would rob him of his destiny. Even though the fairytale has an almost tragic ending (in baseball terms), with twisting, unexpected storylines, it is still gratifying to to marvel at what it was, instead of giving in to the temptation of contemplating what it could have been, #KenGriffeyJr #TheKid #KenGriffeySr #DanoraPennsylvania #BigRedMachine #BirdieGriffey #TomMooney #RogerJongwaard #SeattleMariners #HaroldReynolds #MoellarHighSchool #KingDome #RandyJohnson #EdgarMartinez #CincinnatiReds #ChicagoWhiteSox…

1:17:27This week we head out to Mowtown, U.S.A,, to learn about the rich tradition of baseball in Detroit. A history that goes all the way back to 1867, just two years after the conclusion, of our nation's bloody civil war. Professional baseball dates all the way back to 1884, when the Detroit Wolverines were winning National League pennants, before becoming a part of the Western League's American Association. By 1901. the Tigers have become charter members of the American League. They are the oldest, continuous, one name, one city franchise in the A.L.. This week, we cover the life and career of Eddie Murray, who grew up in the gang infested, crime riddled streets of Watts, California. Eddie and his five brothers, who would all go onto professional baseball careers, would escape the allure of drugs and crime by spending their summer days playing baseball throughout East L.A. Eddie was a phenomenal, championship high school pitcher, but he would teach himself how to switch-hit, and become the third of five baseball players to finish his Hall Of Fame career, with 500 home-runs while collecting 3,000 hits. #EddieMurray #SteadyEddie #LockeHighSchool #OzzieSmith #BaltimoreOrioles #EarlWeaver #EdwardBennettWilliams #KenSingleton #LosAngelesDodgers #NewYorkMets #ClevelandIndians #CaliforniaAngels #CalRipkenJr…

The same kid who couldn't afford baseballs and he would chop the heads off his sister's baby dolls, to use as a cheaper option. This week BKP will present the life and baseball career of the face of baseball in the 20th century, Mr George Herman Ruth, better known as the Babe. Besides Jackie Robinson, no baseball player has had more influence on the brand of Major League Baseball, that we consume today, than the Babe. From his rough and tumble childhood, along the docks and water-ports of Baltimore, to learning the game of baseball in a boy's school for the incorrigibles, to thrilling the baseball universe with his skill, first as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, and then as one of the deadliest sluggers of all time with the New York Yankees. 1:09:46This week, BKP opens with the Hot Stove Report, and addresses, the all-in move by the Astros, by acquiring the best closer on the free-agent market, Josh Hader. Now that Houston has one of, if not the best, late-inning trio of arms, coming out of their bully, what are their roles? Also what are the Stros next moves to solidify, the rest of the bullpen, that has seen three free-agent defections, and a season-ending injury to pitcher Kendall Graveman. And the Tampa Rays pulled a typical sneaky under the radar signing, as they snatch Noayuki Uwasawa from the Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan, and sign him to a minor league deal. even though the Angels offered a guaranteed major league contract. What are the roster ramifications for the Rays with this move? What role does Jake see him playing in Tampa? This week's topic is Jim Thorpe, arguably the greatest athlete of the 20th century. The Giants make a curious move by signing the second best closer on the free agent market to become a starter in their 2024 rotation. The Yankees bolster their rotation as well, but are still eying last year's NL Cy Young winner, Blake Snell. 1:37:27This week we open the show with the Hot Stove Report, that saw the Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto at it again, as he makes two trades this week with the Giants and Rays. The Giants will receive a former Cy Young Pitcher in the deal, who won't be available, until the second half of the 2024 season. Prompting Jake to wonder, if the Giants GM is on the proverbial hot seat. The Mets make moves to bolster their starting rotation. The Cubs sign Japanese southpaw Shota Imenaga, and of course, what would the offseason be if the Dodgers didn't make another move and sign another player with a deferred contract. But Jake ask the question, are the Dodgers on paper, better than the Braves right now? Then we get into this week's topic, as we dig into the life and career of Gary Carter. His rise throught the Expos franchise. His contributions to the Mets World Series championship in 1986, to his fight with brain cancer, that would eventually rob the baseball universe, of this elite player and class individual way to early. BKP starts off this week with the first Hot Stove Report of 2024, as Jake breaks down the particulars of the trade between the Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox; Vaughn Grissom for Chris Sale. Soon after the trade with Atlanta, the Red sox sign RHP Lucas Giolito to a one year contract, with an option for 2025. What do the Braves get out of this deal? Will the Red Sox, with an all right-handed rotation, be aggressive in their pusuit of a southpaw among Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery or Japanese import Shota Imenaga? The Reds continue to make moves to solidify their bullpen and rotation. Will the large markets begin to show agression in the market, now that so many of them lost out on the Sho and Yo Sweepstakes tour? All this and more, in week eight of the 2023 0ffseaon. Then we dig into the life and career, of baseball's first Jewish superstar, Hank Greenberg. He played in an era with the Great Depression and World War II, in the background. Amid the anti-semetic environment playing out on MLB ball fields around the country, and with Adolph Hitler, and his evil Nazi thugs rising to power in Europe. With the Dodgers spending over a billion dollars on big fish free agents Shohei Ohtani and Japanese import pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, as well as the extension given to new starting pitcher, Tyler Glasnow, Jake wonders aloud if the Dodgers are done with their free agent spending spree? Or could there possibly be another bullet in the gun, left to be fired? Also what does this mean for the next three big free agents in Cody Bellinger, Blake Snell and Josh Hader.. all this and the updates of the latest moves of the last week. This week, BKP does a deep dive into the life and career of the great Sandy Koufax. The kid from Brooklyn, who grew up with dreams of playing basketball for his beloved New York Knicks In the NBA, but would wound up having a twelve year career, pitching for his hometown Dodgers, that is earmarked by a tale of two halves to a career. 1:16:32Lyman Bostock had it all. He had the genetic lineage, as his father was a star outfielder for the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro Leaguess during the 1940's. He had a sweet left-handed stroke, that seemingly launched gap-seeking linedrives at will. He had blazing speed, great baseball instincts, and played Gold Glove caliber defense in Center Field. In his first two full seasons while playing for the Minnesota Twins, Bostock is in contention with his future Hall Of Fame teammate Rod Carew, for batting titles in both years. He is then signed by the California Angels, before the 1978 campaign, for the largest contract in American team sports at the time. His star is blinding, as many of his peers and opponents, consider him a superstar in wait. While standing on the precipes of greatness, all of that comes to an end, in the blink of an eye. This week, we dig into the complex history of the 14th oldest ballpark in the Major Leagues, T-Mobile Park in Seattle Washington. With the deteriorating Kingdome literally falling apart, and after years of behind the scenes political wrangling by the King County Council, The Mariners ownership group, as well as the tax paying citizens of Seattle. The future health of the franchise, finally had stability with a great retro-throwback style crib of their own, with the modern amenities. The state of the art yard was opened in July of 1999, after five years of challenging and sometimes contentious planning and construction. Since then, it has become one of the premier facilities for the Major League Baseball brand. #SeattleMariners #SeattlePilots #SicksField #KingDome #Ichiro #FelixHernandez #EdgarMartinez #KenGriffeyJr #RandyJohnson #KingCounty#GaryLocke #RefuseToLose #SlateGorton #NormRice #SafecoField TMobilePark #DaveNiehaus…
Hideo Nomo could have stayed in Japan and played ball. Made alot of money, and enjoyed his fame, but he wanted more for himself. His move to play in America, was an attack on the Japanese baseball establishment, but it also promoted thought for not only future Japanes ballers, but the whole entire Asian-Pacific rim, as he offered a pathway of least resistance, to playing the best of the best. He was willing to risk his ruputation back home. He was willing to risk all that he had accomplished as a baseball superstar in Japan. He was willing to put it all on the line, without really knowing if he would be successful. But he believed in himself. He had very little to gain, and everything to lose. This week we discuss the career of the baseball pioneer, Hideo Nomo, who's impact on Major League Baseball, changed the game forever, and for the better. #MasinoriMorakami #HideoNomo #KintetsuBuffalo #MasatoYoshii #AkiraOgi #NankaiHawks #SanFranciscoGiants #LosAngelesDodgers #KeishiSuzuki #ShigetosiHasagawa #DonNomura #ArnTellum #RandyJohnson #ShoheiOhtani #HidekiMatsui #HidekiIrabu #YuDarvish…

His 612 home runs rank eighth on the MLB all-time rank and his 1,747 walks rank seventh. Williamsport, Pennsylvania and their little league baseball complex fields are nestled beautifully in the rolling hills of the Keystone State. Every Year in August, thousands of people from arond the wold descend on the sleepy, baseball town, to witness, the forever magical union of baseball and childhood play for two weeks. It is the sheer essence of baseball. it is everything that grown-ups aspire the game to be, before we do our best to ruin it with our involvement. Rollie Fingers was the right player, at the right time, while playing for the right teams, to forever change the complexion of the Closer role in baseball. When FIngers reached the majors, the Closer role was limited, as Starting Pitchers rarely left games with a lead. But as team offenses became more powerful, after expansion in 1969, as well as the introduction of the DH in 1973, and without Tommy John Surgery as an option yet, managers throughout the game became more willing to replace Starting Pitchers in the late innings, with fresh arms. Leading the way, during this time, was the handlebar, waxed and curved mustached Fingers, setting the standard for future generations of Closers. #RollieFingers #SteubenvilleOhio #RanchoCucamongaCalifornia #UplandHighSchool #JohnMcNamara #HankBauer #DickWilliams #CharlieFinley #ReggieJackson #SalBando #GeneTenace #OaklandAthletics #SanDiegoPadres #MilwaukeeBrewers…
Over 60 years after it's creation, the baseball board game phenomenon known as Strat-O-Matic, still has a large cult following. The impetus of the game was the brainchild of 11 year old Hal Richman, who was a ravenous stat-crazy baseball fan, with very little athletic ability himself. The young boy developed the game, as a way to escape his chaotic and difficult childhood, while generations of seamheads since then, have just used his game as an escape. This week we will dig into the history of a game, that the young boy launched from his parent's basement. it has become a cult classic, that has influenced pro-ballers, MLB front office types, journalist, play by play icons and fans from every walk of life. it was the precursor to fantasy, roto and simulation games that are so popular today. This week we take a deep dive into the life and baseball career of arguably the greatest defensive third-basemen who has ever lived, and Orioles loyalist Brooks Robinson. There is a saying where I come from and it goes; In New York, they name Candy Bars after Reggie Jackson, in Baltimore, the citizens name their children after Brooks Robinson. And that is not empty platitudes being offered up, it is a tradition that still happens today, over four generations later. He is the last of his kind, from a bygone era. Success has never compromised his moral integrity or his stand-up character. Even today he remains as auththentic and as genuine as the day he left Little Rock, Arkansas to pursue his baseball dream. Eddie Waitkus was the Fred Astaire of first-basemens during his era because of his nimble defensive footwork and his impeccable grace around the bag. He was a solid, productive bat, finishing with a .285 average over his 11 year career with the Cubs, Phillies and Orioles. But that is not what he is most remembered for, if he is remembered at all. On June 14th, 1949, he is lured by an 18 year old obsessed fan named Ruth Ann Steinhagen to her hotel room, who has been quietly stalking him for three years while playing for the Cubs. She shoots the rising star in his stomach with a .22 caliber pistol. Waitkus' story is a cautionary tale, and it was immortalized loosely by Bernard Malamud's novel, "The Natural", which was later made into a hit movie in 1984, with actor Robert Redford playing the protagonist. The ups and downs of a baseball career that is culminated with him leading the 1950 Philadelphia Whiz Kid Phillies to the NL Pennant, after his miraculous recovery. #EddieWaitkus #ChicagoCubs #PhiladelphiaPhillies #BaltimoreOrioles #RussMeyer #BillNicholson #RuthAnnSteinhagen #BernardMalamud #TheNatural #RobertRedford #DizzyDean #TedWilliams…

With all the missing stats and data from his career, Satchel Paige's verified numbers do not do him justice. The numerous stories of his exploits on the mound however, has forever left his mark and kept his memory alive in the baseball universe, all these years later. His bluster and self-promotional showmanship would make him bigger than the game and mere stats. This week, we will sift through the real and the apocryphal, to get to the bottom of this man's legacy. Negro Leagues history is full of incredible baseball players, who because of the cruel discrimination of the time, never got to shine as bright as they should have. From her innovative drainage system, scoreboard format and lush Kentucky Bluegrass field, Redland Park/Crosley Field would not only set the standard for stadiums of her day, but pass her legacy down to ballparks as templates that are still being used today, in the modern game. #CrosleyField #CincinnatiReds #GarryHerman #PalaceOfTheFans #RedlandField #MattyScwab #JohnnyVanderMeer #JoeNuxhall #BoboNewsom #LarryMacPhail #PowelCrosley…
This week's topic is about the amazing path Ron LeFlore took to the Major Leagues, which is unlike any other before or since. After a botched armed robbery in 1970. LeFlore would play the game of baseball for the first time in his life, for the Jackson State Prison baseball team, where he would be discovered by Tigers manager, Billy Martin. Within three years of his release from prison, he would find himself as the starting Center Fielder for his hometown Detroit Tigers, on his way to what appeared to be a top shelf caliber career. He had developed himself into one of the most dangerous hitters in the American League. And he excelled at what else? Stealing of course. This is the incredible story about Ron LeFlore. #RonLeFlore #JacksonStatePrison #BillyMartin #JimLeyland #MontrealExpos #ChicagoWhiteSox…
Unless you are a seamhead living under a rock, you have probably seen or at least heard about the Savannah Bananas, turning the baseball universe on it's head, down in Georgia. Attending a Bananas game is tantamount to going to the circus, and a baseball game, or something that closely resembles one, breaks out. From ballplayers playing on stilts, to the Banana Pep Band banging out music in the stands, to the 60 year old and over senior citizens dance crew called the Banana Nanas, you never know what you are going to experience in Historic Grayson Stadium, but you know the focus will be entirely on exciting baseball and non stop entertainment. The Savannah Bananas have become a viral sensation with over 52 million followers on Tik Tok alone. How did this happen? This is the story of how Jesse and Emily Cole built this exploding empire from the ground up, in a highly skeptical city, where the Coles were not looked at as baseball saviors, rather the next group of owners who were coming to town to fail. Boy were they wrong.... This is the story of the Savannah Bananas…
At elevation levels ranging from 400 too 700 feet and after 31 months of relocating 8 million cubic yards of Earth, 13 million pounds of reinforced steel used and an army of construction men who literally moved mountains to build this modern day marvel of engineering. The third oldest stadium in the majors was born, The legendary ballpark also has a sad and sordid backstory, that saw three Mexican-American neighborhoods in the ravine, razed to the ground by the government, for an eventual failed public housing plan. In 1908, Philadelphia was a two baseball team city. It was not only home to the established Phillies, it was also where the upstart American League team, the Athletics played under the watchful eye of club owner Ben Shibe and his right hand man, Connie Mack. The A's quickly became the team of choice as they almost immediatly found success and pennants in the City of Brotherly Love. Because of the team's accomplishments on the field and at the gate, the club began construction on the first all concrete and steel baseball stadium, they would eventually name Shibe Park. The ballpark would revolutionize baseball from the all wood tinder boxes to a state of the art baseball palace. And their incredible feats of engineering would serve as a template for baseball stadiums in the future. Of all the wacky promotions baseball has used in their storied history to bring fans to the ballpark, Disco Demolition Night will forever live in infamy. The brainchild of Mike Veeck from the White Sox front office and a local Chicago rock and roll disc jockey, would declare war on the popular genre of disco music. For 98 cents and a disco album, fans could get a ticket to watch both games of a Tigers/White Sox double header. Between games, the plan was to take all the records collected at the turnstiles, and blow them up in centerfield with dynamite.
