While fashions change and technology evolves, there are just some things about being human that transcend time. And the persistence of those human experiences is why anyone can find themselves in the timeless, romantic, and funny novels of Jane Austen. The Jane Austen Podcast with Alison Larkin brings a fresh voice to these classic stories. Hosted by writer and comedian Alison Larkin, each season will present an Austen novel with her award-winning narration and feature chats with actors, writers, and other fascinating people who have one thing in common: a passionate love for Jane Austen. Whether you’re a die-hard Austen fan or you have yet to be introduced, you’ll find something delightful – and relatable – at every turn. We are currently airing Emma. Emma Woodhouse is a young, wealthy woman who enjoys matchmaking. Despite her good intentions however, Emma often misinterprets the relationships of around her, leading to romantic entanglements. The novel explores themes of love, class, and self-discovery, and is known for its witty and ironic portrayal of early 19th-century English society. Stay tuned for Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, and Persuasion! “Alison Larkin is a comic writer and performer and she approaches Austen as a satirist…she has genuine theatrical skill…sustained comic creations. The voice reveals all.” – The New Yorker “Listeners will be captivated from the first sentence” – AudioFile Magazine The Jane Austen Podcast with Alison Larkin is presented by Realm. Listen away.

Elizabeth tells Jane of her conversation with Darcy. At first Jane is surprised - she didn’t think Lizzie liked Mr. Darcy at all - but then overjoyed that her sister will be married to him. Darcy asks Mr. Bennett for Elizabeth’s hand. Mr. Bennett is also surprised at this news - as he too thinks Lizzie does not like the man, but Elizabeth assures him she does and that this is what she wants. Elizabeth also tells her father it was Darcy who paid Wickham. Her father is delighted that he does not have to pay back his brother-in-law. Elizabeth tells Mrs. Bennett who is shocked and then beyond happy to know not only are three of her daughters being wed but that Lizzie will be wealthier than even Jane! Elizabeth asks Darcy when and how he came to love her. He cannot be sure when but he fell in love with her because of her spirit and mind. The news of the engagement is shared: Elizabeth writes to the Gardiners, Darcy to Lady Catherine, and Mr. Bennett to Mr. Collins. Mr. Bennet writes that though he knows Lady Catherine may be angered by Darcy denying marriage to her daughter, Collins should seek side with Darcy as he is more well off. Collins does and visits the family with congratulations. Jane and Bingley move into an estate near Pemberley. The Bennet family visits often - especially Kitty who spends more time with her sisters and becomes a fine young woman. Mary stays at home with her parents. Lydia often overstays her welcome at the Bingleys, constantly asks Jane and Elizabeth for money (Elizabeth does oblige with her own savings), and moves around constantly. Georgiana and Elizabeth become close. Caroline Bingley has welcomed Jane to the family and, though disappointed in Darcy’s marriage, is cordial to Elizabeth. Lady Catherine and Darcy eventually make amends and she visits Pemberley. The Jane Austen Podcast with Alison Larkin is a Realm production. Listen away. Mr. Collins writes to Mr. Bennett after hearing rumors of Elizabeth’s engagement to Darcy. Mr. Collins warns them not to go against Lady Catherine’s wishes to have Darcy marry her own daughter. Mr. Bennett shows the letter to Lizzie and laughs at the idea of her marrying Darcy. Bingley and Darcy visit Longbourn again - they go on a walk with Jane and Elizabeth. Elizabeth and Darcy end up alone. Elizabeth finally thanks him for what he did for her family. Darcy admits he did it all for her - that he still cares for her. She finally admits that she also cares for him. They both apologize for everything they’ve done. (Darcy also told Bingley it was him that didn’t notify him of Jane being in London. Bingley forgives him.) Darcy admits it was when he heard how Elizabeth responded to Lady Catherine, that he knew he still had hope. He apologizes for how he acted before - admitting pride. Lydia and Wickham visit Longbourn. Lydia is in a new bride state of bliss - oblivious to any trouble she has caused, bragging, and getting anyone she can to call her Mrs. Wickham. Elizabeth observes that Wickham does in fact return affection for Lydia. When regaling the details of her wedding to Elizabeth, Lydia lets it slip that Darcy was in attendance. She immediately apologizes - saying she was meant to keep that bit a secret. Wanting to know more, Elizabeth writes to her aunt for more information. Mrs. Gadiner’s return letter confirms Lizzie’s fear and hope that Mr. Darcy was the one to find the couple and then paid Wickham the large sum of money, but asked Mr. Gardiner to take credit. Darcy claims it’s because he feels guilty for not speaking of Wickham’s manners sooner, but Mrs. Gardiner thinks there is another reason as well, then makes note of how lovely a man Darcy is. On the way to Longbourn, Mr. Gardiner attempts to dissuade Elizabeth’s fears by stating Wickham must be certain to marry - otherwise his own reputation and career would be at stake. Elizabeth does not agree - as Wickham’s previous actions don’t support this claim. When they arrive at Longbourn, they find Mrs. Bennet in a state of panic. She tells her brother that when he finds Lydia, to make sure she marries Wickham (and to consult her on the wedding dress). Mr. Gardiner joins Mr. Bennett in London to search for the couple. Jane and Elizabeth read a letter from Lydia to Mrs. Foster. In the letter, Lydia says how delighted she will be to sign her name Mrs. Lydia Wickham - showing that at least she thinks she’s getting married and did not run away with worse intentions. Rumors begin to reach the family of Wickham’s debts due to gambling and his lavish lifestyle. The news reaches Mr. Collins who writes to the Bennet family, ensuring them that Lydia has ruined their reputation and any chance of their daughters marrying. He says Mrs. Collins and Lady Catherine agree with him. Mr. Bennett returns home having failed to find Lydia. He asks for no one to speak of the matter with him, as he is feeling guilty for letting it happen in the first place. He swears he will be more cautious with Kitty. Elizabeth and the Gardiners are surprised to see Darcy arrive the next morning accompanied by his sister, Georgiana and Bingley. Georgiana is shy but pretty. Bingley is delighted to see Elizabeth and asks after her family - though careful not to mention Jane directly. Elizabeth wonders if he is still in love with Jane. Darcy invites Elizabeth and the Gardiners to stay for dinner at Pemberley. At dinner, Elizabeth is impressed by Darcy's kindness and generosity. He is attentive to his sister, and he makes a point of including Elizabeth and the Gardiners in the conversation. The next day, Elizabeth and the Gardiners return to Pemberley - Mr. Gardiner to fish with Bingley and Darcy and the women for tea with Georgiana and the Bingley sisters. Caroline Bingley tries to make Elizabeth feel uncomfortable by bringing up the departure of the militia and how it must disappoint her family. Elizabeth steers the conversation away from Wickham, in hopes not to upset Georgiana with the mention of his name. After everyone leaves, Caroline criticizes Elizabeth to Darcy - making comments about Elizabeth’s looks. Darcy notes Elizabeth is still “one of the handsomest women of my acquaintance.” The Jane Austen Podcast with Alison Larkin is a Realm production. Listen away. Elizabeth is initially surprised by the beauty of Pemberley and the kindness of the housekeeper who speaks highly of Darcy. She then comes upon a portrait of Darcy, and is struck by how handsome she finds him. As she walks around the estate, Elizabeth imagines what it would be like to live at Pemberley. Suddenly, Darcy appears. (He wasn’t to arrive until tomorrow.) Elizabeth is embarrassed to be caught, but Darcy is extremely polite and gracious. She is impressed and begins to see Darcy in a new light. At the end of the chapter, Darcy asks Elizabeth if he can introduce his sister to her. After leaving, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner discuss Darcy's surprising geniality - not at all how Elizabeth had led them to believe. The Jane Austen Podcast with Alison Larkin is a Realm production. Elizabeth tells Jane of Darcy’s proposal and letter - leaving out the bits on Bingley and focusing on Wickham’s true character. She asks Jane if she should expose Wickham to their mutuals, but ultimately they decide against it, as Darcy didn’t expose the matter to anyone himself. Colonel Foster’s wife extends an invitation to Lydia to spend the summer with them in Brighton. Elizabeth asks Mr. Bennett to not allow Lydia to go, worried Lydia’s flirtatious nature will embarrass the family. But Mr. Bennett believes there is nothing to be done about her nature - it's either her at home or in Brighton, and in Brighton perhaps she will mature. Thus, Lydia departs for Brighton, leaving behind a jealous Kitty. Elizabeth sees Wickham before he leaves. She makes mention of having seen Darcy and met Colonel Fitzwilliam. Wickham comes to understand, through Elizabeth’s discreet hints, that she knows the truth of his past. They depart. Elizabeth reflects on her parent’s marriage: she’s disappointed that her father has married a ridiculous woman, yet also disappointed in her father as he has not been a respectable spouse. In July, the Gardiners take Elizabeth on a tour of the country, as promised. Mrs. Gardiner suggests they visit Pemberley. Elizabeth agrees when they discover Darcy will not be home. Before she leaves, Elizabeth has a conversation with Mr. Collins in which he rejoices at the perfectly happy marriage he has with Charlotte. Elizabeth knows there is no true love nor true happiness between the couple, but she does concede the thought that her friend is content. The women stop by London to pick up Jane on their way home. They are met by Kitty and Lydia. Lydia goes on about the soldiers and how they will soon leave for Brighton. She hopes she can convince the family to summer there.
