Unfortunately, though it was known to be dangerous, the extent of how dangerous it was had not yet been determined. After several women who worked or had worked for the Radium Dial Plant started getting sick, the company was quick to cover it up. Many girls who died of radium poisoning from the working conditions of the factories were misdiagnosed as having died of syphilis, taking their lives and ruining their reputations. The determination of a handful of people led to safer working conditions and the creation of OSHA, but the unsafe conditions had already claimed the lives of many young women. While black nurses were not allowed to work in most hospitals, were not allowed in the American Nursing Association, nor given any supervisory positions in the few hospitals they were employed due to racial discrimination, there contributions to the medical profession could not be ignored. Face to face with the most deadly disease of the time, working tirelessly to care for their patients day in and day out, it is because of them the tuberculosis epidemic ended and the sanatoriums across the nation closed.
