When Jay-Z rapped "in the kitchen like a Simmons whipping Pastry" about their family business in "Empire State of Mind" Angela Simmons knew she made it. She sits down with her brother Joseph "JoJo" Simmons on the For Good podcast to reveal what really happened behind the scenes of Run's House, how she and Vanessa Simmons built the Pastry empire that got Jay-Z's attention, and why Rev Run saying "no" became her biggest motivation. In this unfiltered sibling conversation, Angela opens up about her breakup with Yo Gotti and why she's drawn to certain kinds of men. JoJo hints that she has a type, leading to honest talk about dating patterns and relationships. She also gets real about the unique challenges of raising her son as a single mother and the childhood body image insecurities that JoJo admits he contributed to by calling her "fat" during arguments. Angela also recalls the exact moment she realized she was famous - standing in Times Square after Run's House aired when someone asked for her picture. She and JoJo also break down the pressures of being from a successful family and why having famous parents actually makes it harder, not easier. Also: Pastry outselling Jordan Brand at Foot Locker Body transformation from insecurity to fitness obsession Plant-based lifestyle and wellness routines for mental health Why Simmons kids don't get handouts despite the famous name…

What Matters to Me and Why: Realism January 15, 2003 University of Southern California This was Dallas’s contribution to a series of lunchtime talks hosted by USC’s Office of Religious Life. The theme for the series was “What Matters to Me and Why.” Explanations of Terms: Philosophy: “I like to describe philosophy as the attempt to understand by rational means the necessary structure of the world in which we live.” Realism: “Realism means that all of those things that you apprehend and perceive really do exist, are right where you experienced them, and they would be there if you didn't see them.” For Further Study: The Making of the Modern University: Intellectual Transformation and the Marginalization of Morality , is the book by Julie Reuben that Dallas recommended. “ Naturalism’s Incapacity to Capture the Good Will ” is the paper Dallas wrote about the idea that a purely physical entity would not be capable of goodwill. Kern Family Foundation Pastors Conference Theme: Character Formation July 6-7, 2010 In session two of this 4-part 2010 series, Dallas emphasizes the centrality of knowledge to the Christian life. The historical drive against this view of Christianity is part of a battle for authority over public life. We have allowed our beliefs to be treated as “just faith” and need to reclaim the importance of the knowledge of reality that is contained in the teachings of Scripture. This is where we find the best answers to the Four Great Questions. The answer to the fourth question (how to become a good person, leads into a discussion of the makeup of the human personality and where our actions come from). The overhead transparencies Dallas used in this session are collected in a document you can download here: https://dwillard.s3.amazonaws.com/Kern-Character-Conference-2.pdf For Further Study: Dallas responded to Steven Gould’s book Rocks of Ages at Stanford University’s 2002 Veritas Forum in Why Science and Religion Must Conflict . The Calling and Resources of the Pastor - The Gospel and Character Kern Family Foundation Pastors Conference Theme: Character Formation July 6-7, 2010 Dallas defines character as acquired essence. “It is your identity as shaped by your experiences, and especially your choices, and interaction with other people.” The first session in this 4-part series will give us a good understanding of what character is and how it is affected by our beliefs about the essential questions that shape human life. Dallas points out that the Great Commission (Mt. 28:18-20) includes character formation: that’s what we’re doing when we make disciples and teach them to do everything Jesus said. What’s Good About Good Friday? A Sunday sermon given at The Church of the Apostles in Fairfax, Virginia. February 21, 2010 For Futher Study: 1. Visit DWillard.org and read the “ The Craftiness of Christ ” to learn more about what was really happening on the way to the cross. There are two versions on our site, and we’re linking to “the Director’s Cut” because it includes more detail about what was happening in the spiritual battle between Jesus and Satan. 2. Dallas always encouraged everyone NOT to get wrapped up in atonement theories, but if you’re interested in more of Dallas’s thoughts about the primary strengths and weaknesses of the three most prominent atonement theories, see Getting the Elephant out of the Sanctuary on Conversatio.org. Doing What Jesus Did, Part 1 (The Vision) Conference Theme: “Doing What Jesus Did.” This is the first of two teaching sessions presented at the Vineyard Church of Columbus, Ohio. November 16, 2002 In this episode, Dallas presents a compelling vision of who Jesus is, opening with a study of Philippians 2:5-11: Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The Kind of Person That God Speaks to in Fullness This is the sixth session from a 3-day conference hosted by African Enterprise with the theme “Hearing the Voice of God.” Pietermaritzburg, South Africa August 17, 1993 The kind of person that God speaks to in fullness is the kind of person that the word of God flows into, overruns, overwhelms, moves through and becomes a social and historical reality where they are. You’ll see this in: 1. People whose belief in the substance and power of God’s word opens them up like a channel. 2. Disciples of Jesus who have learned to work with the power and authority of the word. 3. Those who live with God’s word so richly that it becomes a reality that is working in its own right. Does God Speak Today? : Facing the Issues This is the fifth session from a 3-day conference hosted by African Enterprise with the theme “Hearing the Voice of God.” Pietermaritzburg, South Africa August 17, 1993 This episode focuses on four general assumptions that keep people from entering into a life of conversation with God: God would not communicate with run-of-the-mill human beings by surrounding them with His presence and speaking to them. God does not communicate with individuals directly. God cannot communicate with human beings. God should not communicate with individuals. For Further Study: The Frank Laubach book Dallas wants us to rush right out and read is Game with Minutes . The other book mentioned is Letters by a Modern Mystic . Learning How to Reliably Recognize the Voice of God in Your Soul This is the fourth session from a 3-day conference hosted by African Enterprise with the theme “Hearing the Voice of God.” Pietermaritzburg, South Africa August 17, 1993 In today’s episode, Dallas is teaching about how we can learn to know God’s voice. There are three characteristics of God’s voice that we will learn to identify by experience: quality, spirit and content. Dallas also refers back to this list of communication methods from the last session: 1. Phenomenon plus voice; 2. Supernatural messenger or angel; 3. Dreams and visions; 4. Audible voice; 5. The human voice; and 6. The "spirit of man," or the "still small voice." For Further Study Dallas mentioned FB Meyer’s book The Secret of Guidance . When Christ who is our life shall appear with him, glorious.” Colossians 3:1-4 (slightly paraphrased) Does the gospel I preach have a natural tendency to produce disciples as distinguished from consumers of religious goods and services? The Great Commission: “I have been given say over everything in heaven and on earth. So, as you go, make disciples of all kinds of people, gather them in trinitarian reality, and teach them in such a way that they do all things I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you every moment, until the job is done.” Matt. 28:18-20 (Willard paraphrase) Who is an Apprentice of Jesus? As Jesus’ apprentice (disciple, student), I am learning from him how to lead my life in the Kingdom of God as he would lead my life if he were I.
