The world often feels rigged. And this episode is a wake-up call to recognize the barriers that exist for those who don’t fit the traditional mold. In this episode, which is a kind of tribute to my dear departed Dad, I recount some powerful lessons from the man who was a brilliant psychiatrist and my biggest champion. He taught me that if something feels off about the environment you’re in, it probably is—and it’s absolutely hella-not your fault. We dare to break into the uncomfortable truth that many workplaces are designed for a very specific demographic, leaving neurodivergent individuals, particularly those on the autism spectrum, feeling excluded. I share three stories in which my Dad imparted to me more than my fair share of his wisdom, and I'm hoping you to can feel empowered. You'll learn that we can advocate for ourselves and others to create a more inclusive work culture. I have been doodling all my life. In notebooks, sketchbooks, post-its, and pretty much anything else I can get my hands on. I remember when I was in first grade, I would sell drawings of cars and super heroes for 25 cents. This interest continued all the way throughout school as I took every art class as I could. What I love about doodling is how loose and imperfect it is. As a graphic designer bound by rules of grids, spacing, and precision - a doodle is a fun escape. I can just grab a marker and draw and not worry about how realistic or how perfect my drawing is. I just draw what comes to mind. Doodling is not just for artists or designers. It is for anyone willing to take risks and to explore their creative side. I hope doodling brings you as much joy as it brings me. Happy doodling!

Having some ‘Fun’gi Mario was having a very difficult day. His entire day was filled with coins, Koopas, and falling down pipes. Don’t get me wrong, he loved doing all these things. However, in the back of his head he always thought of one thing… Mushrooms. Mushrooms were extremely rare and hard to find in his world. He could punch blocks all day long and still come up empty handed. Mushrooms were special because they gave him new life and energy. They removed all feelings of fatigue and hunger and plus they tasted great. After his third or fourth level, Mario leaped into the air to break a block. He all but lost hope of finding a mushroom and there it was. The most beautiful green mushroom in all the land. His hands became sweaty and his cheeks began to hurt from his enormous smile. Today was going to be a good day. What does a mushroom look like to you?…

Black Toast One morning Tom reluctantly woke up with a lot on his mind. He had to be at work at 8am and had a huge meeting. His company was starting a new project and he was responsible to tell everyone about it. He could not be late. Since he was already behind schedule he thought he could save time by making breakfast while he was in the shower. So he grabbed two slices of white bread and placed them in the toaster and turned it on. He then quickly ran to the bathroom to start his shower. After his shower he realized he needed to shave. After he shaved he realized he needed to iron his shirt. After that he realized he needed to check his email one last time. Then, all of a sudden he smelt something burning. He quickly jumped from his seat and ran into the kitchen. He saw the toaster billowing thick dark smoke with violent spurts of flames. He quickly grabbed his freshly ironed shirt and began to beat the flames with it. The flames became angry and grew larger and larger and totally engulfed his shirt. The toaster began to melt and Tom began to panic. His ears then began to throb from the loud alarm above his head. He couldn’t breathe. All he could do was… Run down the fire escape!…

Another Bright Idea Professor Plankton was known for his bright ideas. He would travel around the sea sharing his great knowledge with everyone he would meet. He would discuss the finer points of fishics, science, and bubble-ology and anything else that would come to mind. One day Mr. Plankton decided to go to a place he had never been to before. This place was rumored to have the biggest minds anyone had ever seen. As soon as he heard this, he knew this was a place he had to be. After swimming for five days he finally reached his destination and began his search for the biggest minds the world has ever seen. He searched and searched but he always seemed to be the smartest one around. He thought, “Will I ever find the biggest minds in the sea?”. Then it dawned on him. The biggest brains are just that… BIG.…

Cozy Cabin in the Woods I always thought it would be great to live in a log cabin in the woods. Being able to walk through evergreens and hear the wind pass through the needles as you smell the smoke from a wood fireplace.

Random Doodling an Abstract Design This was a fun one. I just started out with a few circles and then branched off from there. Doodling is great because you’re not totally focused on the final product but what you’re doing at the exact moment.
Just Horse’n Around This mean thoroughbred is ready for the football season. Horses are hard to draw from memory, which is why I went with a cartoon version of a horse. I need to practice drawing a realistic horse from an image to memorize the lines. I will post another try of a realistic horse sometime.…

'Ear'ie I remember learning about this in art history class. Did this really happen? Did Van Gogh actually cut off his ear and send it to his girlfriend. That is one crazy act of love.

I Give to You a Poor Representation of Pepé Le Pew For being one of my favorite cartoon characters, you’d think I would be able to draw better.
Ship Anchor or News Anchor? I decided to doodle a news anchor because it was the first thing that came to mind. Not sure what story he is presenting though.
After a long week of punching the clock, Mr. Stevens set up a hammock he received for Christmas last year. It has been collecting dust all winter and is now basking in the shade of two large oak trees. The smell of freshly cut grass and sound of birds chirping sends him into a soft sleep. The hammock creeks as it sways back and forth... releasing stress with every rotation. Nothing could have prepared him for this moment. All of a sudden, a large crack sound is heard from above his head. He is startled from his nap and looks to see the source of the sound. He notices a large crack in the main supporting branch of the far left tree. He wonders to himself “Did I really need to eat all of those holiday cookies?”…
