His research interests generally revolve around factors that influence the dynamics and regeneration of plant communities, and he is also interested in a wide variety of topics in community ecology. We spoke to Scott about the two species that are already functionally lost from Eastern North America’s forests—the American chestnut and the American elm—and why these trees serve as cautionary tales for the challenges now facing the eastern hemlock, the white ash, and the sugar maple today. We also discuss what we as citizens need to do to both individually and collectively to protect our forests’ future.
