Send us a text What Do We Really Want? “When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be made well?" - John 5:6 On the surface, Jesus’s question to the man who had been ill for 38 years is shocking. 38 years of hardship, 38 years of struggle, 38 years of disappointment, who wouldn’t want those to come to an end? No doubt the man was unhappy with where he was. On the other hand, after 38 years, he knew how to navigate it. He knew how to survive. In a sense, he had become comfortable in an uncomfortable situation. His being made well would require him to give up the people, places, and things that he had become accustomed to. He would no longer survive on alms. He would no longer be a sympathetic figure. He would have to find new things to do, new places to be, and new people to be around. Did he want that? Send us a text The Holy Spirit Heals Division “At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were.” - Acts 11:11 Peter breaking bread with these Gentile folk from Caesarea was about far more than his willingness to change and adapt his religious customs for them. The people of Israel and Judea were a conquered people who lived under the boot of Roman occupation. The Romans looked on the Jews so much so that they built the new city of Caesarea for themselves rather than live in Jerusalem, a place they considered as backwards as it was inconvenient. The Jews hated these unclean Gentiles who had all the money, all the power, and all the luxury and status. They wanted God to punish and purge these folks, not redeem and reconcile them. Were it not for the work of the Holy Spirit touching the hearts of both the Jews and the Gentiles… Were it not for these Gentiles having the humility to seek and accept the help and advice of the Jews they once looked down on… Were it not for these Jewish Christians having the grace and faith to welcome and nurture the oppressors they once wanted punished… These folk would have forever remained divided by their ethnicity and social status as well as by their religion. Send us a text Two Interpretations of Revelation “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away” -from Revelation 21:1 We have two ways we can read the words of Revelation. We can believe that these are future events that will take place at the end of the world. So we accept a world that in the meantime is destined to keep getting worse. Or we can believe that words of Revelation are taking place right now and in every generation. We can believe the words of Jesus that the Kingdom of God is already in our midst within and among us. We can believe the words of Paul who declares that everyone in Christ is a new creation where the old things have passed away and all things have become new. If we choose the second interpretation we will become students who learn to walk in the ways of love, bringing good news to the poor, welcome to the stranger, freedom to the oppressed, and who bind up the broken hearted. Send us a text Yes, Even Them! “And they praised God, saying, "Then God has given even to the gentiles the repentance that leads to life." - from Acts 11:18 A healthy spirituality allows us to look in the mirror and truly see ourselves. This spirituality gives us both confidence and humility. We see our faults and shortcomings. At the same time we also know and feel that God loves and embraces us, yes, even us. The next step in our spiritual journey is for us to look around and understand that God loves and embraces them, even them. These unclean foreigners who had been previously restricted by them to the outermost temple courtyard were fully embraced by God. What was even more shocking for them is that the Gentiles were not required to embrace their standards of purity before God embraced them. Nor were they required to do so afterwards. Send us a text Be Servants not Judges “But a second time the voice answered from heaven, 'What God has made clean, you must not call profane.” Acts 11:9 We have been called to take matters of ethics, morality, and personal conviction very seriously. Paul in writing to the Romans declares that each of us should be fully convinced in our own minds. (Romans 14:5) Where most of us struggle is in figuring out what to do with and about other people who think and practice differently. Too often we are bound and determined to judge, exclude and perhaps even punish people who do not follow the dictates of our consciences. That’s not our place. All of us belong to God and God alone. As Paul declares, each of us will ultimately stand or fall before God… And the part we miss, “And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.” (Romans 14:4) God’s grace works like that. Send us a text Recognize the Gifts of Yourselves and Others “And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning.” -Acts 11:15 The earliest Christians made a lot of assumptions about who could be fully accepted and included and who couldn’t be. They assumed they the gifts were only available for people who believed and practiced like them. The Gentiles according to their beliefs were unclean and impure in their estimation and understanding because they didn’t practice holiness and ritual purity in the way they believed God required. They couldn’t possibly be gifted. Therefore they couldn’t be included. Despite their erroneous assumptions, the Holy Spirit came. The Gentiles received the gifts. And Peter recognized it right away. We have to be willing to recognize the gifting and working of God in others, even when, especially when it goes against our assumptions and beliefs. Send us a text The Defeat of Cynicism, Indifference, and Division “After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands.” - Revelation 9:7 The Rulers of empires such as Rome survive and thrive and maintain their power and influence for three reasons: cynicism, indifference, and division. When a person or a people are cynical enough to believe that the systems will always be corrupt and individuals will always be out themselves, they will work to secure their comfort and not worry about anyone else’s. When a person or a people become comfortable with their own situations they often rationalize and justify their good fortune in a way that allows them to become indifferent and impatient to the plight of others. When we are divided by race, and class, and gender, and religion and nationality we fight each other for the scraps instead of contributing to feast. The radical vision of Revelation, of Paul, of the gospels, and of the prophets envisions a world where we come together across all divisions to embrace a vision of mutual and universal peace and wellbeing. Send us a text The Revolution of Revelation “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne and to the Lamb!" - from Revelation 7:10 Revelation is a complex book that is subject to a multitude of interpretations. At its heart, its core message declares that God is on the throne not Caesar. That message makes it both subversive and revolutionary. That’s why so many early Christians were executed by Rome. Rome claimed that it had brought peace to the world and that its emperor was its savior. But the so called Roman peace was built on military domination and economic exploitation, where the wealthy and well connected lived lavish lives while the poor endured humiliation and hardship. The Greek word for salvation also means deliverance and liberation. The revolutionary message of Revelation declares that the true God is a good of liberation and deliverance and that the Gospel message is good news for the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized. I know them, and they follow me.” - John 10:27 Many years ago now, back when my children were little and I was still a young parent, a professional colleague talked to me about the way she had raised her children. She told them was never going to yell and scream to get their attention. No matter what was going on, no matter what else they were doing, they needed to be attuned to the sound of her voice. I never met her children. I don’t know if she had really followed her own advice in raising her children. But I was immediately stuck by how sound a spiritual principle this was. There’s a lot of noise and chaos and confusion around us in this world. The voices of fear, and anger, and resentment, and greed, and lust, and false pride are always whispering and sometimes screaming in our ears. Send us a text “No one will snatch them out of my hand” - from John 10:29 Over the years, I have found that the most controversial aspect of my speaking and writing is that my understanding of the Gospel is centered around the core belief that God’s love is unconditional and universal. The Gospel message directs us to love everyone even those who refuse to love us back, to forgive everyone even those who have neither asked for it nor deserve it, and to care for everyone regardless of merit. God loves the world the same way the Gospels direct us to love the world, universally and without exception. We are God’s sheep and God calls to us. Send us a text “The works that I do in my Father's name testify to me.” - from John 10:25 Anyone who does anything of substance or significance is going to be subject to questions and criticism. Jesus had a lot of skeptics and critics. None of us particularly like to be questioned or criticized. We have a tendency to want to justify ourselves, to rationalize our choices, and at times to become overly defensive. Jesus shows us a different way handling such situations. While Jesus does offer concise explanations of his reasons and purposes, he doesn’t get bogged down wasting time and energy arguing with people who don’t want to be convinced. He instead chooses to focus his efforts and energy on his mission. He never lets the criticism or slander distract him from doing the work he was called to do. Send us a text Care for My Sheep “A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep." - John 21:16 Three times on this sequence, Jesus asks Peter if he loves him. Three times Peter answers that he does. Three times Jesus replies, then that being the case, you go and feed and care for my sheep. We express our love and devotion to God by the way we care and nurture for God’s people. Now there may be some who limit their understanding of God’s people to a particular faith or denomination. But this is incorrect. As the Psalmist writes, “The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” (Psalm 24) We are all God’s sheep. There are no exceptions or exclusions. Everyone reading, watching, or listening to this has someone they can help, someone they can be a blessing to, someone they can encourage and support. These someone’s are God’s sheep. Send us a text They Followed Him Anyway “After this he said to him, "Follow me."- from John 21:19 It would have been easy for the disciples to follow Jesus if they had believed following him was going to lead them to health, and wealth, and material prosperity. However, in this case, Jesus had just finished describing to Peter how he would one day be arrested and executed. In fact nearly all of Jesus’s inner circle and the Apostle Paul were executed. They knew it was virtually inevitable that they would be if they followed him. They followed him anyway. Following him led them to their experiencing the Holy Spirt raising them up over the forces of fear, and hate, over injustice and oppression. Following him allowed them to experience the Kingdom of God among them. Following him led them to a peace that surpassed all understanding. Send us a text Bring What You Have “Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." - John 21:10 These disciples had spent the entire night fishing. After their initial night of failure and frustration, Jesus had them adjust their approach and try again. This led to their bringing in a massive haul. When they got back to shore, they found that Jesus had already built a fire, and prepared a meal of bread and fish for them. Jesus invited them come and eat. Jesus also invited them to bring what they have. The lessons is that we’ve been called to stay together and work together. We’re not always going to have the success. Sometimes we will have to adjust our approach and try again. The important thing to remember is that we have all been invited to a feast that God has already prepared. Send us a text God Has Prepared a Meal for Us “When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread.” - John 21:9 These disciples had been through a lot to say the least. Jesus did not bring about the kind of change that had hoped for or expected. Yet they knew something even bigger was happening. Jesus was raised from the dead and had appeared. They didn’t know what it meant for them. But they knew it would be something big. They stayed together while they were waiting. They continued fish as they normally did. After a long night of failure, they followed the advice of a stranger who was actually Jesus, and came back with a massive haul of fish. When they got back to shore, they recognized Jesus. Jesus had already prepared a meal for them. God is with us in our success and failure, in our good times and our bad times. Send us a text The Truth Will Set Us Free “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - from John 8:31-32 Some truths are difficult for us to acknowledge. Sometimes acknowledging the truth portrays us and the people we love in a bad light. Sometimes acknowledging the truth forces us to deal with our guilt and shame. Yet, if we are going to abide in the way of love Jesus taught and demonstrated, we have to come to terms with the ways in which we have failed to love. We have to be willing acknowledge the ways we have failed to honor God by failing to honor the reflection of God in ourselves and in each other. Most of us like to think of ourselves as good and decent people who always do the right things for the right reasons. As a result we will deny or rationalize any of our actions or behaviors that are inconsistent with our desired self image. We will stay stuck repeating the same mistakes and getting the same outcomes. Only the truth can set us free to walk a different path and get a different outcome. I’m Horace McMillon. Send us a text The Truth We Dare Not Speak “Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they knew it was the Lord.” -from John 21:12 It’s easy for us to tell ourselves the things we want to believe. It’s easy to tell ourselves comfortable lies. It’s easy for us to overlook the truth right in front of us when the truth demands that we make a change. If the Jesus that they had seen arrested, tried, convicted, tortured, and executed was somehow right in front of them, walking and talking with them, their lives could not go on as before. Everything would have to change. What are the truths that are right in front of us that we don’t dare to speak, even to ourselves? Send us a text When We Come Up Empty “They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.” - from John 21:3 Peter and some of the other disciples had spent the entire night fishing. But despite their best efforts and hard work, they came up empty. They hadn’t caught anything. It sometimes happens to all of us. We do the right things. We work hard. And still we fail to reach our goals or even make much progress toward them. How exhausting! How frustrating! Despite being tired. Despite being frustrated. The disciples didn’t give up. They were open to suggestions and willing to try some new techniques- in this case fishing from the right side of the boat. Are we willing to listen? Are we willingly to adjust our approach and try new techniques? Are we willing to work through our failures, fatigue, and frustrations? Send us a text Accountable to Grow “He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" - Acts 9:4 How did, Saul, one of the biggest persecutors of the early Christian movement, which was then know as “The Way”, go on to be remembered as Paul a saint who had more books of the New Testament attributed to him than to any other writer? He was open to criticism, willing to be led, willing to learn and accountable to change. Instead of responding defensively to the question, and trying to justify his actions, he sought to understand. “He asked, "Who are you, Lord?" Saul had spent his entire life working hard to do the right things and to make the world a better place. How difficult it must have been for him to acknowledge that not only was he wrong, he had been completely blind to the truth. If we want to grow, we have to stop being defensive, stop always trying to justify ourselves. We have listen, ask questions, and listen again to understand not just respond. Send us a text God Isn’t Angry with Us “For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” - Psalm 30:5 God isn’t angry with us. Some times it feels that way when we are hurting, when we are afraid, when we feel like we are stuck. It may feel like we’ve been forsaken, but the Psalmist says that even if we make our beds in hell, God is with us. God isn’t angry with us. We are angry. We are bitter. We are hurting. We often confuse our healthy desire for justice and deliverance with our unhealthy desire for revenge and retribution. It’s true this world and many of us in it are going through a nighttime of hardship and suffering. But these won’t last forever. Joy is coming. Peace is coming. Healing and health are coming. Redemption is coming. They will be here in the morning. We like the prodigal may find ourselves in our own pig pens of despair. Nurturing and encouraging for some, and teaching and preaching for others. Some may cook. Some may paint. Sone may plant. Some may sing and dance. Some may build, maintain and repair. Some may not have specific gifts they have discerned. Nevertheless, living in faith means believing that we have been sent into the world to be the bearers of kindness and compassion, hope and justice, love, mercy, and grace. John 20:21-23 In the Gospel of John, Jesus replaces many commandments with one new commandment: that we love one another as he loved us. (John 13:34) Love is hard when we have been hurt or wronged. Love is harder when we are still being actively hurt and wronged. So the first gift of the Holy Spirit in the Gospel of John is the capacity to forgive. The Holy Spirit allows us to live healthy with our wounds as we healing. The power anger, resentment, bitterness, fear, and jealousy have over us and our lives is broken. The capacity to forgive gives us the ability to love. Why We Don’t See God 1:13

Send us a text “While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.” - Luke 24:15-16 These two weren’t the closest disciples. But they were loyal and faithful disciples. They were still with the eleven after Jesus’s execution. Yet they were not able to recognize the risen Jesus walking and talking to them. Why not? The text gives us a hint. They said, “we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.” In other words the Jesus they knew hadn’t met their expectations as a messiah who would drive Rome, likely violently, out of Israel and bring a just peace. They didn’t see that God had a larger purpose for Jesus. His ministry was meant to be for everyone. God’s methods were different from what they expected in that there was no violence or bloodshed on God’s behalf involved. Things didn’t happen the way they expected. So they didn’t recognize what was in front of them. When good people God don’t see the presence of God in our midst, it’s not because God isn’t there. It’s because God’s vision is far bigger and God’s methods are far different from what we expect them to be. The first Passover meal marked not only the end of bondage and enslavement, it mark the beginning of a new journey. It marked the beginning of a journey of an indeterminate length to an unknown destination, but to a destination promised by God. They had to get ready, be ready, and stay ready. While the blood was a symbol, the purpose of the lamb itself was to give the people the strength they needed to make the journey they were going to have to make. Some of us are on a bad road. Maybe we initially chose it. Maybe we were pulled and drugged onto it. Maybe we were born into a place and have known no other life. The message of Good Friday is this: our pasts no longer gets to dictate what we do today or who we become tomorrow. Before we get to the new life, we have to bury the old one. It means leaving behind the toxic relationships and environments. But even on our hardest days, if we remember that it is a gift, we will see the beauty, we will feel the love, we will find the hope to make it through. It’s interesting that this Psalm 118 was included in the resurrection day readings found in the common lectionary. Perhaps it is meant to remind us that the Spirit of God lives in us and with us. I warn you… that those who live like this will not inherit (experience) the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21) The list above I quoted directly from Galatians, but I switched the order around because too many appear to stop reading after hearing “sexual immorality” and pay little attention to the rest of the list. Those who live in hatred, and discord- stirring up mess, practicing division do not experience God’s peace. They came to understand that being accepted by God doesn’t require adherence to specific customs and traditions. Being accepted doesn’t require correct beliefs and understanding. Being accepted requires our practicing righteousness while living with a sense of awe and wonder. Righteousness as described by Jesus requires us to love our neighbors in both tangible and intangible ways. We care for the poor, the sick and the imprisoned. We welcome the stranger. We do good to everyone including our enemies. We work for justice, equity and equality. Many in the world reject this message, but those who live their lives embracing it become the stones God uses to build this temple, to remake and reshape the world into what it is intended to be. We can be open and honest with God about our hopes and dreams, our aspirations and desires. We can be open and honest about our fears and our pain as well. Living in faith in part means trusting God enough to ask for what it is we really want. Some of us need to take this necessary first step. The rest of us still need to make the second. That is trusting God enough to embrace whatever it is that God has for us. Sometimes we are called to walk on roads we don’t want to travel to go places we don’t want to go, to do things we don’t want to do. Do we trust God enough to pray that God brings us into alignment with our highest possibilities and purposes for this time and place? Are we willing to be and become what Got wants us to be, do what God wants us to do where, how and when God wants us to? That can be a hard cup to drink. Peter said he was willing to follow Jesus to the cross until realized he might actually have to go to the cross. How ready are we to follow Jesus when it might actually cost us something? When it might cost us that job or that promotion? When it might cost us a friendship or a relationship? When it might cost us our status, privilege or our social standing? When it costs us our safety, comfort, and security? There is a human tendency to make ourselves the heroes of our own stories. We like to think of ourselves as the brave and true, the good and noble, the generous and kind. I won’t speak for you, but I’ve told myself some lies. Send us a text When Shouts Prevail “But they kept urgently demanding with loud shouts that he should be crucified, and their voices prevailed.” Luke 23:23 Those who would control and manipulate us usually do so by trying control and manipulate our emotions. Their loud shouts whip up anger, whip up our resentment, whip up our fears and insecurities and drive us to actions that benefit themselves and no one else. We get caught up in their whirlwind, but as the Prophet Elijah learned, the voice of God is not in the whirlwind. The voice of God is not in the earthquake or in the fire. The voice of God is not in the chaos or confusion. The voice of God comes to us in a still small voice, in a quiet whisper. (1 Kings 19:12) That voice reminds us that we are beloved. That voice reminds us that we are never abandoned or forsaken. Even if we are in a barren wilderness, we fear not because the voice of the shepherd is guiding us to greener pastures. Send us a text “Now there was a good and righteous man named Joseph who, though a member of the council, had not agreed to their plan and action… This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.”- from Luke 22:50-52 The folks on the council were driven by fear. They were afraid that if Jesus kept stirring up the people with his calls for righteousness and justice and if Jesus kept contrasting the Kingdom of God with the empire of Rome, there was going to be a revolution. If there was a revolution, the Roman army would be sent in to crush it. Rome didn’t make a lot of distinctions when they sent the army in. Every one and every thing would be destroyed. So to avoid that they plotted to get rid of Jesus. Joseph spoke up for what was right. And when the other disciples were too afraid to claim Jesus, Joseph had the courage to claim his body, and spent the money to bury him properly. Sometimes we don’t have the power or influence to change the toxic dynamics of the environments we find ourselves in. But we still don’t have to give into them. We don’t have to go along with them. The so called Peace of Rome meant their being dominated militarily, exploited economically, and their culture and religion subverted and altered by Rome itself. Even the Jewish high priest served at the pleasure of Rome. Ahead of the major Jewish festivals, particularly Passover, there would be an imperial procession through the streets Jerusalem. In a show of force, the Roman military marched through the streets, banners held high reminding them the Caesar was in charge. The Caesar they said was the king of kings, lord of lords, prince of peace and savior of the world. Palm Sunday remembers Jesus’s one person counter protest march where he contrasted the values of the kingdom of God with those of Rome, of servant leadership with imperial leadership, contrasted the Roman peace with the true peace of God. Palm Sunday invites us to question the values of our larger society and contrast them with the values Jesus and the prophets proclaimed. Then we get to make a choice. Send us a text The Comfort of Friends “He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,” Luke 22:15 Jesus knew his purpose and was faithful to his mission. But that didn’t make it easy. The message that Jesus preached was a threat to the status quo. He knew it wouldn’t be long before the religious and political authorities came for him. His life was going to be taken soon. Jesus didn’t want to die. He was under intense pressure and stress. He was literally sweating it as the expression goes and the Gospel describes. But he didn’t waver from his purpose. Instead he sought the comfort and companionship of his closest friends, of his ritual and tradition, and of centering prayer. The cheering crowd is fickle. Jesus knew he couldn’t count on them. He instead turned to the people who had been through it all with him. They weren’t perfect. He was very clear about who they were and how they would do, even about the ways they would let him down. But their love and commitment were real. Do we have those kind of friends in our lives? Are we being this type of friend to each other? Jesus separately declared us his friends. Jesus knew his disciples were going to have a hard time with his crucifixion and everything surrounding it. He knew that they would be sifted like wheat. He even knew that under pressure Peter would deny even knowing him. Jesus didn’t expect his followers to be perfect. In fact he knew they would not be. His prayer was that when they got turned around and off course they would turn back. His prayer is that they would learn and grow and get stronger. His prayer for them is that they would help each other do the same. We all get it wrong. None of us gets it right. Jesus’s prayer for us when we mess it up is that we will get back up, dust ourselves off, and get back on track. Jesus’s prayer for us is that we will help others do the same. I’m Horace McMillon. We have all been called to walk with and in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We have all been called make sure the hungry have something to eat, the thirsty have something to drink, to welcome the stranger, to cloth the naked and to care for the sick and imprisoned. Some of us have more specific callings that require us like Abraham and Sarah to begin a journey of an unknown duration to an unknown destination. Answering both types of callings requires us to get uncomfortable, to learn and develop new skills and disciplines, and to trust God enough press on through our disappointments, setbacks, mistakes, and failures.
