Season 5 Podcast 86, A New Voice of Freedom, Argument for the Existence of God, “Justice and Mercy C.”
Strictly speaking you can apply the scientific method to metaphysical truths. The stumbling block is that in discovering metaphysical truths, the first step is faith. To discover God, one must take a leap in the dark. Even a cursory reading of the Holy Scriptures will reveal that all of God’s laws are built on the principle of causality, whether those laws are physical or metaphysical, temporal or spiritual. I simply mean the principle of
· If…Then,
· Either…Or,
· Because…Therefore.
Broadly speaking there are two classes of laws: temporal laws and spiritual laws. Spiritual laws are divided into two classes: unconditional laws and conditional laws.
The law of justice, for example, is unconditional. The law of mercy is conditional. From an eternal perspective, let’s say all unconditional laws fall under the law of Justice. All conditional laws fall under the law of Mercy. Because the law of justice is unconditional, when Adam fell it brought temporal death and spiritual death into the world. Adam alone could not find his way back to God because he fell under a broken law. There were no conditions that allowed him to return. There were no laws to obey that allowed him to return. In other words, there was no repentance.
That is the grand paradox of Christianity. Fallen man was in a fallen state and would remain there forever subject to Satan. Nothing man could do could overturn an absolute law. The law of justice demanded it.
That is why a Savior was necessary. Man could not save himself. Here is the paradox. The law of justice is necessary, or creation would return to chaos. The law of justice must be absolute. There is no room for compromise. Chaos is a natural state. To bring order out of chaos, justice had to be absolute. God lives in an absolute world where no evil can exist. God will not allow it, or he would cease to be God. The existence of God depends upon absolute law. God is perfect. Perfection can only exist in a world of absolute laws.
When Adam fell only a divine redeemer could save him; however, to save man from the fall of Adam the divine redeemer had to first satisfy the law of justice. To save mankind he had to first continue to live a perfect life. If Christ had broken any law, he could not have been our redeemer. Furthermore, there would have been no one to redeem him. The Father couldn’t save his only Begotten Son because the Father could not allow any imperfection in his kingdom.
Next our Redeemer had to satisfy the law of justice of his own free will. He could not be made to save us anymore than he can save us against our will. Agency is a primary law of heaven. Third the Redeemer, being sinless, had to take upon himself the sins of the World. In other words, though he was without sin, he had to pay the price for our sins. That meant that he had to suffer the pains of hell. Next he had to die, to give his life that we might live again eternally with God. And finally, He had to be resurrected so that he could resurrect us. Why was it necessary? It was necessary because the law of justice demanded it. The law of justice demanded it because absolute perfection is the requirement for Godhood. It is the paradox of God, isn’t it. Laws must hold. Nothing about God can be arbitrary, else there is no perfection. In the world of perfection nothing is accidental. In the world of creation nothing is accidental. Everything is by divine design. If we want to understand God, we must understand law.
