Dawson is wrapping up his work on the A.I. Brooks documentary just as A.I. Brooks is wrapping up his affairs on earth, furtively hiding pills and getting Dawson to sign paperwork without giving him time to read it. Dawson might not have taken the time anyway, since he's focused on a big milestone with Gretchen: meeting her friends. Going out to a show with a couple of Gretchen's college friends throws their age difference into stark relief, as does Gretchen talking about him like he's less of a boyfriend and more of a boyfriend-shaped body pillow. Meanwhile, Joey is trying to barter a couple of precious weekend nights off work at the Yacht Club by making Drue's date with Anna, daughter to the Club board president, a double. Mrs. Valentine makes it clear she'll only grant the time off if Drue's date Anna has a great time, so both Joey and Pacey have to run interference to draw attention away from Drue's stank attitude. Tobey tries to take Jen's advice by being friends with Jack, suggesting that Jack join him tutoring middle school kids, which is extremely cute...at first. Turning 18 puts a person through changes. For example, Pacey's decided HIS 18th birthday should be at a completely different time of year than his 16th. But never mind! He complains to Joey that his birthday is cursed, so all he wants to do this year is chill out at home with her, and she promises they will, and we all know that means she's implicated in his surprise party. The event -- to be held at the Witter family home -- coincides with what was to have been Gretchen and Dawson's first date, and Gretchen may be a little too eager to bag that plan in favor of her family obligation; she also makes it clear that although she's bringing him to the party, she doesn't want Joey or Pacey or anyone in her family to know she and Dawson are dating, if they even are, which Dawson obviously takes as a slight. While the birthday boy doesn't die of an accidental gunshot as happened at Scott Scanlon's birthday party, this one is...almost as bad. And Joey doesn't help by trying to ignore Pacey's dark mood and unhelpfully suggesting that he just try harder to get along with his awful parents. (By the way, playing his awful mother: Jane Lynch!) Elsewhere, Jen satisfies her last five community service hours giving safe rides to drunk teenagers, and you'll never guess what civic-minded homosexual also happens to volunteer with the organization: Tobey! Dawson decides to be the change he wants to see in the world, telling Pacey directly that he like -likes Gretchen before anything really happens between them. Predictably, Pacey's not about it, which is why the timing is perfect for him to accompany her to her college town to pick up the car she left there: Pacey knows this will necessitate interaction between Gretchen and her ex-boyfriend Nick (Christian Kane, later of Angel and Leverage !), so Pacey can totally manipulate them into getting back together rather than have Gretchen get closer to Dawson! In theory! While Gretchen is out of his immediate vicinity, Dawson has awareness of other people -- specifically, Grams and Mr. Brooks, who have evidently gotten closer since Mr. Brooks's failed overtures at the Christmas party. What is Dawson's duty to Grams, knowing that Mr. Brooks is ill? Elsewhere in Capeside, Drue is very much not looking forward to a visit with his father, so it's just as well that he happens to shut them into a Yacht Club storage closet, then break off the knob. Everyone is abuzz about the big kiss at the party in the previous episode. What did it mean? Was it strictly mistletoe-related, or should everyone be monitoring Dawson and Gretchen for couple-iness? Joey is clearly preoccupied yet also unable to talk about it like an adult, biting Pacey's head off when he tries to bring it up and finally kicking him out because he's...being too nice and offering to take household responsibilities off her hands (like the care of Alexander while Bessie and Bodie are out of town). Joey's martyr complex has the worst possible consequence: she beefs an English test! OH NO!!!!! Meanwhile, when Dawson himself isn't dodging questions about the kiss and insisting that he and Gretchen are just friends, he's doing what everyone has been dying for: making another movie! It's Christmastime, but don't get too excited for the merriment yet: college application stress looms over (nearly) everyone. Not Joey, of course, who's invited to a Yacht Club dinner for prospective students of Worthington University. She spends so much effort convincing Pacey to go that she completely forgets how much she clenches up any time she's near a cloth napkin or multi-fork table setting, and recedes into the background as Pacey charms the alumni rep. As for everyone else: Dawson watches Mr. Brooks's last movie, Turn Away, My Sweet and is blown away (my sweet) -- so much so, perhaps, that when he has to write his essay for his application to USC film school, he's only able to write around the prompt question of why he wants to be a filmmaker. Jack finishes all his applications and is concerned about the very vague answers Jen's giving about hers -- and about the silent treatment Grams is STILL giving her after the rave fiasco. Gretchen learns that the Leery Christmas parties she loved have a kid have been suspended in her absence the last few years due to...well, divorce; she convinces the Leerys to let her throw one at the house, which conveniently lets everyone use it to hash out their issues -- even Grams and Mr. Brooks! In the wake of Andie's supposedly nearly fatal drug interaction at the rave, the Capeside friend group is in tatters. Even though Andie has been very clear in stating that Jen is not to blame for what happened, neither Jack nor Pacey can forgive her. When Jen won't oblige Drue by forsaking hope of making up with them and running to him instead, he schemes to FORCE her to spend time with him by confessing to his part in the drug handoff and getting them both sentenced to community service together. Meanwhile, Joseph has a wild suggestion for Andie: since she's already earned enough credits to leave high school right now, maybe she just...should? And go live with an aunt in Florence until it's time for commencement? Andie doesn't feel great about leaving when everyone is in a big fight, and feels even worse when Jack gives her the guilts about it. Speaking of guilt: the last piece of Joey's application to Williams College is a peer recommendation from the person who knows her best. Naturally, this becomes a whole thing as she has to decide whether that person is the one who's been at every pivotal moment since she was barely out of diapers, or the one who got to know every pore on her body when they were living in extremely close quarters for three months and not, say, THE ONE WHO'S KNOWN JOEY HER WHOLE LIFE AND RAISED HER AFTER THEIR MOTHER DIED. People have a lot to celebrate at the top of this episode. Andie finds out she got into Harvard! Dawson's parents decide to be parents...some more! What great timing: there's a rave for everyone to go dance their faces off! After Drue's spamming finally convinces Jen to go, she digs her un-birthday ecstasy out of her dresser just in time for Andie to see her with it. Jen's description of the drug experience is a little too exuberant -- particularly given that Andie's already disappointed that her antidepressants have flattened her highs along with the lows so that her academic achievement doesn't feel like anything at all -- and before you know it, Andie has snuck one of Jen's tabs. Dawson tags along with Pacey, Joey, and Gretchen, and in the car ride over Joey can't help noticing how flirty they seem and asks Gretchen if Dawson might think things are going anywhere with her. Remember a couple of episodes ago when Mitch had a cold and Gale had a stomach bug? Well, he's all better but she just can't shake it...because it's not a stomach bug, actually. When the home test turns pink, Mitch is unreservedly excited about it, but Gale's not sure adding a baby to their mountain of new-restaurant debt and the college tuition they're about to have to pay for the crappy kid they already have -- and the fact that the crappy kid they already have is already moping around jealous of the baby that isn't even here yet probably doesn't help. Dawson seeks advice from Gretchen, who already had to nudge the Leery men toward the obvious conclusion with regard to Gale's symptoms, and gets a lot more than he expected. Joey has noticed that Pacey keeps cutting off their makeout sessions when she would be fine continuing, and confides in Jen that she thinks he's getting frustrated that she's still not ready for sex. Jen is a very good friend who gives her very good advice about being prepared for sex whether she's currently ready or not; maybe Jen also could have told her about hiding her take-home package from the clinic in a place where someone else might chance upon it while putting away Joey's socks. Andie's latest scheme to buff up Jack's college applications is for them both to volunteer as youth soccer coaches, but when one player's sister comes on to Jack WAY too hard, Jack blurts that he's gay and immediately wishes he hadn't. The worst storm in 30 years is on its way to Capeside, and no one seems to know but Grams and the editors of the Farmer's Almanac. Drue's obnoxious behavior in English class having doomed himself, Joey, and Dawson to have a three-way Two Gentlemen Of Verona debate for class the next day, prep is underway during Joey's Yacht Club shift. (Why are the future debate adversaries preparing together? It's more convenient for the plot that way, of course!) Presumably Joey's only getting away with all this slacking because Mrs. Valentine is an alumna of one of Andie's safety schools, and is busy interviewing Andie as a prospective applicant; their conversation quickly becomes an investigation of Andie's mental health. Since Joey couldn't join him, Pacey is celebrating his first-ever A by going sailing with Jen, which is why they're on the water -- with a dead radio -- when the storm starts to kick up. Once it gets too dangerous for Pacey to try to return to shore, he decides to head for a cove so secret he doesn't even know its name, but trusts that Dawson does. But given Dawson's record as a seaman, surely there's no one left in town who would let him borrow his boat, which is why it's a good thing that crotchety old Mr. Brooks (Harve Presnell!) showed up in his for his weekly prime rib special at the club, and that Drue knows where to find his spare keys. That only lasts until the end of the first day, when new temporary guidance counselor Mitch -- apparently on leave from his job as general manager of the restaurant -- calls Pacey in to tell him that instead of on the True Love he should have been in town making up the three junior classes he failed in summer school. Mitch alerts Dawson that Pacey's in big trouble, and though Dawson is a bitch about it, he does hear it when Mitch suggests that he pass the news on to someone who does care if Pacey lives or dies. Speaking of whom: Joey needs a job, and Andie recommends that she apply to wait tables at the yacht club, which is full of cute rich boys and big tips...here at the end of the tourist season. Never mind: Joey takes Andie's advice and lies about connections to big wigs on the club board, getting her hired on the spot, and putting her in the path of "Owen Ross," scion of the family she claimed to know. Almost four months after becoming a shock box office hit, The Blair Witch Project still has a stranglehold on culture, if we want to be generous and use that term to describe Dawson's Creek . The core four are reading The Crucible in English class, and naturally Dawson decided that he's too special to do assignments as assigned; he's convinced Principal Green -- who's teaching their class to free Mitch up for football stuff, presumably -- to let him make a documentary about a local witch legend. ("Isn't The Crucible kind of...not really about the Salem witch trials?" We'll get into it.) He'd already arranged to have Pacey and Jen "help" so that they could also blow off their papers, and when a desperate Joey runs into the video store to rent The Crucible because she's run out of time to read the play AND the last copy is gone, Dawson belatedly remembers she exists and offers to let her in on the scheme too. On the island, the kids ignore warnings not to get lost in the woods or stay past dark. Joey and Dawson also ignore good taste and make the story of the one accused witch whose body was never found, and whose dalliance with her true love led to her conviction in the first place, into a stand-in for their own stupid relationship problems. Meanwhile, Jen finds a love spell in a gift shop book and decides to try it out on Pacey, for sport. Back home, Andie lets the tiny amount of power Principal Green granted her on the student disciplinary committee go straight to her head, and her citation-writing hand. He decides to do something about Jack, the gay football star, and gets signoff from everyone except Jack's coach, Mitch. Jen is also implicated in football culture when the other cheerleaders make a kiss from her a prize in a silent auction, and is so appalled that she resigns as head cheerleader (although events leading up to this do suggest that she was ready to do that regardless and the auction just provided a convenient pretext). Now sprung from his relationship with Andie, Pacey involves Joey in his latest shenanigans; getting caught cutting class for a trip to the post office lands them an unorthodox and moderately punishment from Principal Green that -- get this -- ALSO braids into the football storyline. Andie is trying to put her PSAT cheating in the rearview, but when Principal Green tells her he needs to see her about a disciplinary matter, it revs up her paranoia. The entire junior class is in a tizzy about the imminent PSAT, the practice for the test that could possibly determine the entire course of their lives. But maybe they don't ALL have to stress about it so much: somehow, Eve comes into possession of a copy, which -- in her established role as a chaos agent -- she gives to Dawson. Then, he lets all his closest friends know he has it so that they can tell him what to do about it; unfortunately, that's when they all have to go outside for a fire drill, leaving their stuff, and when they come back in...the test is gone. Suspicions start flying around as to who the culprit could be, and the complete lack of evidence, apart from past behavior possibly informing actions in the present, doesn't stop Dawson making some pretty uncharitable AND unfounded accusations. Meanwhile, football is apparently still happening whether we like it or not. Jack suspects his teammates are being extra-hard on him for homophobic reasons; Henry tries to help him so that Jack might return the favor by getting him a proper introduction to his dream girl, Jen. Mitch is, as we learned in the premiere, Capeside High's football coach, and both he and Principal Green are very focused on turning around the team's years-long losing streak. (This contradicts what we were told about now long-gone football star Cliff, but never mind; he's in a better place.) Mitch and the principal thus enlist Dawson to create a promotional film for the team, and somehow he finds the time around condom shopping, because Eve is still around -- now as a Capeside senior -- and still very openly coming on to Dawson whenever she sees him. It's too bad Dawson can't use footage of the current team, because freshman quarterback Henry Parker (Michael Pitt) is actually good, and by chance finds the wide receiver of his dreams in Jack, whom Mitch soon drafts to join the team; this should provide a nice break for Jack from worrying about why his dad, who has moved his business to Capeside so that Andie can resume her studies there, doesn't want Jack to join them. Speaking of Andie: she's inconveniently released from her residential treatment center days in to the school year. Pacey is overwhelmed with excitement about getting to pick her up -- after having apparently only written emails and letters the whole time she was gone -- but when he gets there, he finds her with a boy, and then seems to be avoiding Pacey whenever he tries to get some time alone with her. Hoping to avoid telling Joey about her dad's return to drug dealing, he takes Gale's advice and goes straight to Mike, telling him what he knows in the hopes that Mike will...knock it off? Or something? Instead, The Icehouse gets firebombed while all the cocaine -- oh, and also all the kids we know -- are inside. The situation does bring Pacey's dad, Sheriff Witter, back onto the scene to be an even bigger jerk than he was the last time we saw him, which is saying something. The Leerys -- other than their poor boundaries with regard to adult/child friendship -- remain the best in parent class, Gale's decision to leave Capeside for the job in Philadelphia also causes some minor turmoil. Jack having resolved, at the end of the last episode, to call his dad for help with Andie since he couldn't put it off a single second longer, Joseph arrives with a distinctly unhelpful announcement: he's selling the house and bringing the kids back to Providence so that both Andie AND her extremely offscreen mother can get full-time medical care. This is, of course, bad news: Andie doesn't want to say goodbye to the best boyfriend any teenaged girl ever had, and Jack doesn't want to resume living with a parent who definitely hasn't accepted Jack's coming out (and barely accepted him before that anyway). The McPhees' possible relocation has Jen wondering if it's time for her to leave Capeside too, but a call home to HER extremely offscreen mother lets her know that at least one move she took for granted as an option may no longer be available. After his stressful dinner with Miss Kennedy in the last episode, Dawson is stressed out about his final film assignment, but his idea of interviewing the people around him to describe their "character arcs" over the past year results in him learning more about Joey's dad than he wanted to. Except oh no, when Dawson made his reservation two weeks ago, the maître d' didn't realize there were TWO Leery parties of two, and he's already seated the only one he thought he had that night, which is how Joey and Dawson end up celebrating their month-iversary with Mitch and Miss Kennedy. (No offense to the maître d' but it's probably crap like this that has you working a fine dining establishment in a dying Massachusetts fishing town.) Jen is now crashing at the Leery house, and Gale seems to appreciate having an inappropriately young gal pal to talk to about all her problems. But when she burns the pot roast she'd been making for their girls' night, they decide to dress up and hit the town and you will NEVER GUESS where they ALSO end up!!! Meanwhile, Andie hasn't seen any Abby apparitions since the day of her funeral a month ago, but a mysterious and intense young man has been hanging around, reminding her that no one can find out about what they have. As the news of Abby's passing spreads through Capeside, everyone gets a chance to make it about them. Girls at school who were definitely not Abby's friends distribute yellow armbands in her memory. Jen displaces her guilt onto Andie, then starts drinking. Andie -- worried that Jen might be right when she says Abby would still be alive if Andie hadn't kicked her and Jen out of the wedding -- doesn't correct Mrs. Morgan about her supposed friendship with Abby, AND agrees to deliver a eulogy at her funeral. Jack realizes he may have been the last person to kiss Abby before her death. Joey tries to keep a lid on her feelings so old grief about her mother's death three years earlier doesn't boil over. And Dawson takes the opportunity to rewatch all the footage he shot of Abby for Creek Daze -- which he might as well, if only to take his mind off the possibility that Gale is going to take a fancy network job in Philadelphia and leave him behind.
