It’s great to be involved with this podcast, to have the opportunity to discuss the work we have been doing over the years and hopefully spread to word wider about some of our outreach work.
Shape My Street was conceived as a tool to introduce children in Wales between the ages of 7 and 11 to design as a creative endeavour. There were three key aims:
1) to highlight the value of design in making better homes and neighbourhoods;
2) to provide a vehicle for collaborative, creative activities in the classroom;
3) to increase awareness among this age group (KS2) around potential pathways and careers in design, construction and the built environment;
Shape my Street was deliberately made uncomplicated, resource-light and based online, so that any KS2 class can participate, regardless of geographic location, financial means, or demographic.
Hosted by founder Antonio Capelao, and co-produced with the Built Environment Trust, the Thornton Education Trust, and the Welsh School of Architecture Cardiff University .
These short and to-the-point podcasts hope to improve the interplay between the fields of the built environment and education as we share knowledge between the practitioner, the creative, and the primary school teacher. Exploring how to prepare children and young people for economic, environmental, and societal challenges, and for their professional lives according to today’s needs and those of a sustainable future.
