Historically, cynics were thought to be crazy since they didn’t seem to care much about the necessities of life or doing work that was productive. Cynics today seem to be selfish and only interested in themselves. They are sure that nothing will work out well and everything in life is discouraging or depressing. Older people tend to be more cynical since they have lived longer and seen more of the world and society not working well.

Although God and the Bible say realistic things that sound cynical, God is not cynical. He is patient and continues to love even those who oppose Him. The story of the prodigal son is the story of the Father never giving up hope that his wayward son would return.

Murphy’s law says if anything can go wrong, it will. We do not help ourselves or anyone else when we stop having hope in God. We don’t help ourselves when we focus on people letting us down. We are responsible before God for our attitudes and responses.

God is the God of hope. Hope is the antidote for cynicism.
