Dorothy Hamil - Champion Ice Skater
Manage episode 386424452 series 3304494
Ice skating since whe was 8 years old, Dorothy Hamil won her first national success in 1969 taking the novice ladies title at the U.S. Championships at age 12. By 1976, at the Winter Olympics, she came in second in the figures and then won the short and long programs taking gold home for the United States. She is the last single skater to win the Olympics without a triple jump. How? By creating a new skating move - a camel spin that turns into a sit spin which became known as the Hamil Camel. Her short and sassy hair style became a national sensation and by the 70's the media had dubbed her "America's Sweetheart". I think you'll agree when you hear how sweet she really is in our interview.
