Artificial intelligence is evolving at an unprecedented pace—what does that mean for the future of technology, venture capital, business, and even our understanding of ourselves? Award-winning journalist and writer Anil Ananthaswamy joins us for our latest episode to discuss his latest book Why Machines Learn: The Elegant Math Behind Modern AI . Anil helps us explore the journey and many breakthroughs that have propelled machine learning from simple perceptrons to the sophisticated algorithms shaping today’s AI revolution, powering GPT and other models. The discussion aims to demystify some of the underlying mathematical concepts that power modern machine learning, to help everyone grasp this technology impacting our lives–even if your last math class was in high school. Anil walks us through the power of scaling laws, the shift from training to inference optimization, and the debate among AI’s pioneers about the road to AGI—should we be concerned, or are we still missing key pieces of the puzzle? The conversation also delves into AI’s philosophical implications—could understanding how machines learn help us better understand ourselves? And what challenges remain before AI systems can truly operate with agency? If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe and leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform. I chat with David Jay Paw who is a food and restaurant writer/editor. We talk mostly on food. Heading straight in to his role at Resy and collaborating with some amazing people such as Amanda Nguyen and Susie Bubble who have written articles to share their stories on food and restaurant. Speaking of restaurants, we have a conversation on Somsaa and Ivy Asia, how they misrepresented ESEA (East and Southeast Asian) food and the work that David did to call this out. My favourite part of the show is talking about David's dad who is in a band back in the 80's in Burma called The Wild Ones (check them out on YouTube). If you're listening don't forget to share the show with your friends. I know I always say on all my shows 'this is a very special episode'. But this time, I REALLY mean it! It's special for a few reasons: * It was my first live show with an audience * People paid £14.06 for a ticket (thanks guys) * Proceeds were donated to London Chinese Community Centre and the event raised just over £2K. * Two amazing guests, John Li from Dumpling Shack and food writer and Takeaway book author Angela Hui shared a stage with me. * There were raffle prizes (is it even an event if there's no raffle prizes? Asking for a friend, LOL). Angela, John and I have all been brought up in our parents Chinese takeaway/restaurant and we share stories from behind the counter. It was heartwarming and personally for me, it felt like therapy. If only I knew there were more takeaway kids when I was growing up!! This event is part of ESEAHM (East and Southeast Asian Heritage Month). Thanks to Besean for hosting this for the 2nd year running. A few insta pages to check out! I’m absolutely delighted to collaborate with Chinatown London for my latest episode where I talk to Lucy, Managing Director of See Woo Group and Emily who runs Cuppacha and Taiyakiya . Lucy and Emily spoke about their journey of running a business in the heart of London. It was so nice to chat with them and share our experiences of what Chinatown London means to us and discussing how diverse it is with more and more ESEA shops and food stalls/restaurants opening. For me, Chinatown London brings a lot of memories of when my mum and dad used to take me here when I was at school. Shopping for dried vegetables that mum would put in her soup and buying endless supplies of Chinese bakery. When I first moved to London in 2007, there were times when I missed my family, I would go to Chinatown London for comfort and it’s always been such a joyous place. I have Chinatown London to thank for my entire London experience. In light of ESEA Heritage Month, Chinatown London have put together a campaign #OurChinatown to explore what Chinatown means to people who have stepped foot in Chinatown London. Maisie also runs Bubble Tea Writers Network that supports and encourages ESEA writers in the UK. We also talk about a short story called Brian Wong who was never, ever wrong (written by David Walliams and illustrated by Tony Ross) on how the story has used harmful stereotypes to depict the Chinese community. Which is why the ESEA community need better representation to show the real culture and not the negative stereotypes or the model minority myth. As part of this movement, a huge campaign called Blackout Tuesday was created on Tuesday 02 June where 28 million people across the world posted a black square ⬛️ within 48 hours to support the BLM movement. And to talk about this topic, I bring my friend Wendy (thanks babe) onto my show to talk about her point of view as a black woman, born and raised in Paris and now living in London with her partner Aky (hi Aky). We hear from Wendy on her views on whether Blackout Tuesday created an impact - or was it just a trend? So if you're one of the 28 million (or more) who posted a black square in June, this one's for you! Wendy and I also discuss our lives growing up as a minority and some of the allyship between blacks and asians. Also, in the UK, I discuss the Grunwick Strike (a company that owned Tripleprint, Doubleprint and Bonusprint (blast from the past) where 80% of the workforce were Asian and getting paid 60% less than the UK average and working in poor conditions. I received my first hate messages online for being in an interracial relationship. I reported this to Instagram and to the police who have done nothing about it and advised me to block/ignore the user. Out of frustration and disappointment, I decided to change my podcast schedule around and speak about what had happened in this episode. Hate crime on ESEA has increased by 300% in the UK since the coronavirus and we need to speak out about it and encourage organisations such as Facebook (who own Instagram), the police and the government to make changes. Please check out these pages if you want more information and/or would like to support the ESEA community. A fellow BBC (British born Chinese), Chop_Stick_N_Poke joins me in this episode. A very talented illustrator who designed my Chinese Chippy Girl artwork cover for my pod and Insta page. Her page beautifully illustrates Chinese culture such as cha chaan teng (greasy spoons in East Asia), fruit markets in Hong Kong, white rabbit sweets (remember those????) and so much more. We also talk about growing up with racism, our chippy days, more racism, our siblings who are doctors and whether she prefers Jamie Oliver or Ken Hom. Please follow her for some Chinese nostalgia www.instagram.com/chop_stick_n_poke. Hope you enjoy this pod 🎙 Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…

In this episode, we talk about our lives working in the chippy including who's Dad's curry sauce was the best (my Dad's - OBVS), why we started our podcast, racism and the petition that she has created to stop British media from depicting East and South East Asians with the coronavirus. If you haven't already, please sign the petition! Google 'Change org asian images' and it's the first link that comes up in Google. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…
