Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we will travel back to a 1943 episode of a popular radio show, The Adventures of Ellery Queen. Based on the Ellery Queen mystery novels and magazine, this show follows the adventures of a fictional detective as he solves crimes and mysteries.
The Ellery Queen novels and magazine were co-written by two American cousins, Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee, who used the pseudonym "Ellery Queen" as their collective pen name. Dannay and Lee were born in Brooklyn, New York, and both had a passion for writing and detective stories. They began collaborating on mystery stories in the 1920s, and their first Ellery Queen novel, "The Roman Hat Mystery," was published in 1929.
If you're not familiar with Ellery Queen, the show follows an unusual structure. First, the story is introduced as well as two guest celebrities who will attempt to solve the crime later in the show. After the story is told, but before the perpetrator is revealed, the guests and listener get time to take a guess it. Finally, the story will wrap itself up. Ellery Queen has been doing this for almost a century, so he unfortunately never gets the answers wrong.
The Adventures of Ellery Queen aired on the NBC Blue Network (now known as the ABC Radio Network) from 1939 to 1948, and was later syndicated and re-broadcast on other radio stations around the country. The show was popular with listeners and received positive reviews from critics, with many praising the writing and acting. It was adapted from the Ellery Queen novels and magazine by Dannay, who also served as the host and narrator of the radio show, using the pseudonym Ellery Queen.
