This just in: Russia has launched its first moon-landing spacecraft in 47 years in a bid to be the first nation to make a soft landing on the south pole of the moon.

The Russians are racing to beat India, which launched its Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander last month, and also with the United States and China, both of which have advanced lunar exploration programs targeting the lunar south pole.

Why are these mighty nations racing to the south pole of the moon? Gold? diamonds? Blue cheese? No! The race is on for ICE… over 600 billion kilograms of water ice. Enough ice to fill 240,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Why race to the moon for ice? Because that ice could provide air and water for an army of people, and fuel for their rocket ships. And get this: Whichever nation controls the ice, controls the moon!

This race to the moon leads those of us stuck here on mother earth to ask:

Can hydrogen be farmed to fuel our future?
