God’s Word for Today

25 Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down,

but a good word makes him glad..

- Prov 12:25 ESV

THE BURDEN OF ANXIETY

Anxiety has nothing good to give to our lives. It’s an unnecessary burden that weighs us down. The cares of this world can weigh heavily on one’s heart and cause him to despair or feel depressed. Anxiety can not improve our conditions as one sitting on a rocking chair – moving but not going anywhere. However, a kind word, a word of encouragement, can lift his drooping shoulders and cheer him up. This refers to Proverbs 12:18, which talks about either the healing or hurting power of words. Solomon also noted the importance of carefully choosing and applying our words in Prov 10:31–32; 11:12; 15:1.

What did Jesus say about worry? Jesus warned us strongly against anxiety. He said, "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear'" (Mat 6:31). Instead, He encourages us by saying, "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" (Mat 6:33). Our king is supernaturally benevolent to provide to us, His subjects.

The apostle Paul, too, warned us against anxiety and admonished us not to worry about anything but to pray about everything with thanksgiving (Phi 4:6). The result is for anxiety to cease and God's peace would guard the heart and mind (Phi 4:7). Furthermore, the Holy Spirit has come alongside with believers to guide us in our walk with the Lord. He is called as our Helper or Comforter who will be with us forever (John 14:16). When we are tempted to worry, the Helper brings Scriptural promises to our remembrance that assure us of God's power, presence, and provision.
