Have you ever felt frustrated when a business cuts corners or skimps on a product you purchased? Whether it's smaller portions, lower quality ingredients, or lack of customer service, it's infuriating when companies under-deliver on their promises. We demand 100% of what was advertised and won't accept anything less. But in this eye-opening message, Mat Saxon flips the script and asks - are we skimping when it comes to one of the Ten Commandments? Specifically, the fifth commandment to honor our father and mother (Exodus 20:12). Mat exposes three selfish ways we tend to skimp on this foundational command: 1) By assuming we "age out" of the commandment once we become adults. Using Mark 7:9-12 and Proverbs 23, Mat shows this commandment has no expiration date - we are called to honor aging parents till their last breath. 2) By refusing to honor flawed or dysfunctional parents. While no parent is perfect, the Bible is clear in Leviticus 19:3 that we must revere our mother and father period, no exceptions. Just as we are to honor imperfect authorities (1 Peter 2:17), we give honor because it is righteous, not because our parents "earned" it. 3) By turning appropriate boundaries into unbiblical blockades. Using examples of Jesus honoring His mother and wisdom from Romans 14:19, we see that while boundaries are wise, completely shutting parents out dishonors them. A Biblical balance is needed. With convicting truths and insightful illustrations, Mat calls us to repent of the ways we skimp on this clear command. We may demand 100% from companies, but do we settle for giving God 70% obedience? Mat exhorts us to honor our parents not just with obedience as children, but with our speech, actions, priorities and care as adults. Whether your parents were amazing or deeply dysfunctional, this message will reshape your perspective on the fifth commandment.
