Letters from Siberia: Huseyn Javid’s Final Days and Resilient Mishkinaz 14:19

Mishkinaz had to find work to support them. She began sewing, eventually joining a cooperative named after Clara Zetkin in 1938, where she worked for nearly ten years. She sold everything she could to feed her family and bring food to Javid in prison. Once, she gave his old, worn shoes to a cobbler. But when Javid needed shoes in prison, she had no money to buy new ones. She had to retrieve the shoes from the cobbler, saying she needed them for size reference. Such sacrifices were many. Javid died on December 5, 1941, in a Siberian hospital for the disabled in Shevchenko village, Irkutsk, from a heart attack and sepsis due to frostbite. Nigar was born into the family of Mirza Huseyn Afandi Gayibov, a prominent religious figure and an exceptionally educated man. Devoted to science and enlightenment, Mirza Hussein firmly defended women’s right to education, often saying, "There is no such prohibition in the Shari'a." He ensured his two daughters received the best education possible, a rarity at the time. His daughters did not disappoint him. Educated, fluent in multiple languages, they became some of Azerbaijan’s most progressive women, contributing significantly to the country’s development. Today, however, the focus is on Nigar. The Princess spent her childhood and adolescence in St. Petersburg, where she graduated from a ladies’ college. Apart from her native language, she spoke fluent Russian, German, French, and Farsi, studied music, and played the piano beautifully. In short, she was a modern young lady, well ahead of her time. In 1931 she founded the Berlin-Turkish Women's Club. In addition, she was an honorary member and Chairwoman of the Berlin Society for Science and Arts, the Eastern Islamic Society, the East Asian Society, and the Berlin Islamic Society. For her active work, including philanthropy, she was awarded the Red Cross Order of Merit. Mehpara Taghizadeh was constantly in the spotlight of the highest circles, participated in all official events, and was mentioned in the diplomatic bulletin as "The only Princess from the Qajar dynasty residing in Germany."
