Big thought: A leader’s organizational skills are pivotal within an organization or ministry because everyone else that you’re leading is dependent on your level of clarity and sophistication in handling business. When you finish something last minute, someone else is now more stressed over their role because you didn’t organize enough time. Your level of organization affects your volunteers, staff, marketing opportunities, potential impact and so much more.

Today we are going to talk about the aspect of personal organization as a leader. We’re going to learn about how it can either stall or accelerate your success. We’re going to talk about specific areas that you should get organized in and why, and I’m going to give you 7 practical tips to help you get organized.

So many high potential leaders end up settling for mediocrity because they never changed their level of organization or implemented systems in order to sustain moments of growth. It’s not that they are bad leaders, it’s simply that they needed to get better organized. When the leader gets better, the organization gets better.

Like Driving a Car.

Most leaders' personal organization can be seen by how they keep their car. If you got trash, paper and cups all over your floor board, you’re likely a moment to moment kind of leader who is always playing catch up. And just like a car, you can still get from point A to point B regardless of how unkempt your car is, but you won’t be able to seamlessly take passengers with you or always be on time. Lack of organization makes you forget to fill up gas the day before, check the tires, clean out the mess, top off your oils. There’s always something unexpected that comes up and hinders you from where you were going.

In the same way, you can still get things done successfully being unorganized, but you will hinder the potential impact that could have been made if you were just a little more organized. You could seamlessly handle changes and even growth when you’re organized. But when you’re not organized, you end up not having the capacity to get where you want to go in an efficient manner because you have to keep playing catch up.

Where It Counts.

There are four major areas that you should strive to get organized:

1. Forecasting

2. Systems

3. Communications

4. Contingencies

7 Practical Tips.

1. Start each day with a week at a glance

2. Use automations

3. Keep a clean workspace

4. Create a time block schedule

5. Set timers/alarms for your time blocks

6. Set specific times to organize your workflow

7. Create a 3 tiered task list (urgent, important, passive)

Take away:

1. Do a self-evaluation of your organization skills and rate yourself on a scale of 1-10 (keep in mind that your car most likely reflects how organized you are).

2. Determine what areas you need to improve your organization in the most.

3. Choose 2-3 practical tips from today to start implementing in your workflow.
