S4E19: Rural America's Identity & Politics. Why They Vote Republican?
Manage episode 440850342 series 2970749
Did you know there are 70 definitions of rural?
This is the story of rural America. And although geography does matter for the purposes of this discussion, rural is a loaded term with a complex meaning that cannot readily be determined by looking at the map.
In popular culture, rural may have a negative perception. Regardless of how the media, movies and urban folk perceive rural America, ruralness provides the basis for a strong identity - a distinct identity in a diverse nation.
And since we are so close to the Election, I'll throw this at you: the rural identity is closely associated with politics.
Ask yourself this: why do rural Americans predominantly vote Republican? And why Democrats keep on losing the rural vote?
In this interview, my guest takes us back to 1980. As he explains it, 1980 is a pivotal year in America's rural-urban divide.
He also gives us his prediction for the 2024 Election.
***** 🚩About My Guest: Dr. Nicholas F. Jacobs is a professor at the Department of Government in Colby College, in Waterville, Maine. He is a political scientist who writes about federalism, rural politics, and public policy.
Dr. Jacobs is the author of
- The Rural Voter - The Politics of Place and the Disuniting of America,
- What Happened to the Vital Center? Presidential Populist Revolt, and the Fracturing of America, and
- Donald J. Trump and the American Presidency.
***** And here is my interview with Prof. Edward Foley, which is titled:
"History of America's Election Violence, Electoral College & Why Our Elections Are Producing Minority Winners - As Opposed To Majority Winners". ***** 🚩Scholars Unravel the Middle East: ✅Polytheism in the Middle East - a time without any religious wars. ✅How polytheism ended, and monotheism started in the Middle East.
