In this episode including the following four episodes, taking 2 hours and 52 minutes in total, I read my master's thesis to the non-readers among us, and secondarily to podcast listeners. I have two people in mind when I’m reading my thesis: my parents. My dad told me he wouldn’t read my thesis, a piece that took me over a year to research and write and that I’m proud of. My dad is literate; he just doesn’t read unless it’s related to his profession, the culinary arts. There’s no excuse now dad, you have to tell me what you think about it! And though my mom reads a bit, I think it’s easier on her eyes to let her ears take over, so it’s for her too. So you know, I barely mention iboga at all in my thesis and you’re probably wondering why I included it in Season 1 of Iboganautics. First, my reference to “psychedelic technology” refers to the kinds of traditional and modern artifacts we might pair with psychedelic states of consciousness. I ask whether such technologies could partially or fully control the experience, thus, that which we control reduces fear of it. That’s the overall argument in a two-sentence nutshell, but it’s more complex than that. Second, and I don’t make this argument in my thesis but it’s equally valid and interesting: can psychedelics be considered as technologies-in-themselves? I think so. But for what? Are they spiritual technologies, cognitive enhancers (e.g. nootropics), creativity catalysts, what are they good for, what is their use for us individually and also for society? I argue that psychedelics, including iboga, can be considered as a kind of technology. If you’re interested in iboga or other psychedelics, I recommend you listen to my thesis to get a different perspective on psychedelics, technology, and psychedelic technology. And if you prefer a reading experience, you can download my thesis here: (http://essay.utwente.nl/77339). Also, visit my Podcast Supplements article regarding afterthoughts of me reading my thesis to my parents, and of course, to all of you (https://amhouot.com/25-ep3-7_philosophy-of-psychedelic-technology_am/).
