Erika speaks to Mariam about her experiences as a pro footballer, and how she broke into the Sport for Development sector through an internship.
Mariam Ibrahim is a former professional football player who represented the Egyptian National Women's Football Team. She is on the Sport for Development in Africa team at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Eschborn, Germany.
Mariam has experience at multiple Sport for Development organizations and the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports. She holds a joint MA degree in International Relations from Free University of Berlin, Humboldt University, and University of Potsdam. Her research has centered on women's leadership in sport for development and peace, program effectiveness, and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #5 - Gender Equality.
Mariam believes in the power of sport in contributing to sustainable development and that the creation of safe spaces is the foundation for promoting female participation in sport. Her mission is to bridge the gap between theory and practice while supporting and amplifying the voices of local practitioners.
