Musicians: Take Note!

Who knew that metalhead Joe would be the one to defend current top 40 music? And yet here we are!

Every generation has grumbled about the current state of XYZ and argued that XYZ was "real" in a previous time period. Of course this is not a sentiment that is expressed by all of the members of a certain age range, but it is common enough that you see it splattered all over the Internet and probably know at least a few people who base their opinion of quality of popular art on the release date. Rose-colored glasses indeed!

I'll be honest: I believe that we are living in the golden age of popular music. Creative people can now record, produce, publish, and distribute their music using many of the tools that they already own. Sure, the artists who are backed by production companies with millions of dollars still have a leg up, but every year we see more and more artists release incredibly interesting and unique music that would have never seen support from the record company "suits" of old. The Internet has dramatically leveled the playing field, and now we all have access to the game.

Of course I don't love every popular song that I hear on the radio, but I am so grateful to be alive and experiencing music at a time in which I have the freedom to explore an ocean of creativity for next to no cost. It's truly amazing! And I'll argue that it has helped diversify Top 40 music so that we see unique artists, rather than "trends", garner interest.

I emplore my wonderful listeners to lend an honest ear to what is going on in the music world today. No, you won't enjoy all of it, but you will quickly learn that there is no shortage of intensely creative and fascinating art being introduced to us every single day. There is truly something for everyone.
