Expectations and Disappointments

I get disappointed more than I do angry. And I expect the most of people. So I give them the benefit of the doubt. And the majority of the people stepped up to the plate and shined and shed some skin and really showed me the best.

Leadership Authenticity and Strategic Communication

Because if I kicked and cried like a baby in front of a hundred people, they'd laugh at me. They wouldn't respect. On the flip side, my friend, I'm also a human being. So I want them to see the passionate, true side of a man that's fighting for this. And so I'm not like what you see in the movies or out of Hollywood. I will sit down and break bread with you. I will play pinball together. And I'll not correct your grammar, but I'll make suggestions to make your rhetoric more diplomatic and strategic. I will power up your vocabulary, replace words like help and use assistant guide and LinkedIn and say for my clarification compared to, excuse me, we can, Tara, we can readjust tones. And so by doing so, these individuals will be able to have that much more balance in their work.

Perspective on Learning Challenges

I put fear into perspective. You, my friend, studied French as I Spanish, as they did English, amongst other languages. So why don't we say that learning a second language is 10 times harder than any account that I'm going to put you on. Right. Okay. Okay. To me, you're like, yeah, you're right. I know I'm right. So everyone calms down.

What is one question that you wish I'd asked you? And how would you have answered? I guess... what is the moment in your life that everything changed? And for me is when I sat down with my parents at 18 years old and I convinced them that I was following in my great-grandparents footsteps. He came from Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th, learned English, made our money during the depression. It's in my blood. Skipped a couple of generations, but I'm going south. And Allow me to live a poet's life. Allow me to have a true life. And at 18 years old, making that sort of long play decision, it's kind of crazy. It's kind of risky. It's madness. But looking back at it now, I couldn't be more proud of myself for standing strong and tall and following through on a commitment that I gave myself back in 1991 to continue this and not stop. He also provides tips for dealing with irate customers and preserving energy and emotional balance during phone conversations. Additionally, Richard highlights the power of humor and storytelling in creating meaningful connections over the phone. Season 4 Episode 9. March 20th, 2024. Experiencing Costa Rica's Pura Vida and Mental Decompression And the culture here, it's a very united culture. It's a very proud culture. We mentioned Pura Vida, which means pure life. They're really into nature. So, I mean, with all the national parks that you visited and the monkeys that are hanging around, the sloths and iguanas and butterflies, it's like being in a painting. It really is. Maybe when you decompress, my friend, and you put the phone away and you sit under that palm tree next to a waterfall out in the rainforest and no one's around you, maybe that's the sort of thing that can recharge your batteries and get you in a healthier state of mind. The shame that I see is when people bring that mental baggage with them and hoping that that will erase it when they come here. But no, they need to separate the two. Or when people are here, they go maybe a little above and beyond in regards to adventure. https://youtu.be/P0ZIdIAveek https://youtu.be/68QHH2qszcU Richard Blank hired bassist Garry Gary Beers of INXS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGjN5H4xPQ Lifelong Learners Collective, Ella Catherine, Richard Blank, Costa Rica's Call Center, Outsourcing, Telemarketing Call Centre, BPO, Nearshore Contact Center, Sales, Entrepreneur, B2B, Business, Podcast, Gamification,Leadership, Marketing, CX, Guest, Money, B2C education, BPO trainer, call centre, contact centre, contact center, trend, trending Richard’s journey in the call center space is filled with twists and turns. What is Phonetic Micro Expression Reading, and how can it be leveraged in call centers? https://youtu.be/_3M0cyLKQyk https://youtu.be/uM3SWevsxaI https://youtu.be/2DyaWZoz-Dk The Importance of Diligence and Endurance in Business And at the end of the day, Daniel, when you're talking about leverage, you got to choose between 10 companies. I'm not into the Philippines, might be a little more expensive. Look at the way I treated your assistant. I called you back on time, followed through on that email. How about this? I did so much due diligence on you from your LinkedIn profile on your website that I custom made your voicemail and email. He loved me. It was almost mine to lose. And so I'm earning these things by getting a lot of first downs and moving it forward through momentum. I'm not angling my way in there or pretending to be. And so if you have that sort of pace and rhythm, your supervisor needs to calm down. He should remember when he was on the phone and what it's like to do this sort of forced march. Now also, my friend, you need to build up that endurance for it. You're talking about manual dialing. We have machines now that do that for you. But the old school players off of those Cisco phones, remember how to do those dials? But my parting words, what's assisted me in the long run is just not to be hard on myself. Okay, it's so important to look in my own eyes in the mirror. If you can't do that, we got some issues. And there needs to be some self respect. I like people that make their bed in the morning, if they're capable of hitting the gym, so they can release and retain. And if you can have a better diet, so we just don't do fun food all the time, we have food that can maintain and give you protein. You know, I always believe that regardless of any sort of outcome, at the end of the day, if you know you did things with honorable intentions and good faith, you should be able to live with yourself because a lot of people compare way too much and that's okay. But I don't know. I think you should be your own destiny, your own future, your own pace. My favorite actor is Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney. I mean, Basil Rathbone, that's my mentor. He was doing stuff in the thirties and forties. So when the client called me and said, Richard, do you know anything about classic movies? Yes. Wiffle ball pitch. Here we go again. I started rattling off all my Alfred Hitchcocks and Steve McQueen's. And I mean, come on, man, I'm all over the place. And the guy's like, man, you know this better than I do. I go, could you imagine how I'm going to be pushing this and selling this? Yeah, absolutely. Getting excited over the spaghetti Westerners of Clint Eastwood. I mean, you've got to be kidding me. These were classics. But I tell you what. One of the greatest things people can do is to watch these movies because if you're speaking, let's say for an example, you're 20 years old now and you wanna call someone like myself a business owner, You should be watching Fast Times at Richmond High and Failure Spielers Day Off. Why? Because that's what I grew up on. That's right. So when you call me up, you go, come on, man. You know Mike DeMone's five-point plan. Or you mentioned Scotty Palmer from the movie Hard Bodies when he talked about the BBD, the bigger, better deal. If you say that to me on a phone call, I have my credit card at the ready. It's yours to lose. So we all need to calm down and slow down. Secondly, this is my wheelhouse. How many times do you really get telemarketing calls? So I'll let Billy pitch me for five minutes. I'd love to hear him. And then I say, hey, Billy, you mind if I make a suggestion? Yeah. And then I rope-a-dope them. Real good. And at the end, they thank me. I will... Let them know times when they missed the beat. I will ask certain questions that they never followed up on. They'll glance over it. They'll hedge it and repeat it. But they won't ask a second or third question, which shows depth, interest, and anchoring, as we spoke earlier. I bet you at the end of the phone call, if I asked them to give me the meeting minutes, they couldn't even tell five of the answers that I gave or five of the extra things that I mentioned. And he said something earlier really stuck out to me when it came to leadership. When you're talking about how you wanted to make the people feel like people are not numbers. And I feel like that's a really big thing, especially nowadays when you work for these different companies and these different corporations that they just look at you as a number, you know what I mean? Not as an actual person. So for you to have that intuition to understand that, you know, if I had these people understand that they are people and I care about the person, then it's like everything else will come to respect will come. And it's easy to lead people that want to be, you know, they want to be led and feel appreciated. Paul Angelle welcomes Richard Blank, who shares his journey to Costa Rica and insights on leadership, the call center industry, and time management. Richard offers advice for starting a business in Costa Rica and discusses the benefits of podcasting. Specialized Virtual support for your law firm At Stafi, we’re not just staffing providers—we’re growth partners. Our goal is to help your firm thrive, enabling you to focus on winning cases while we handle the rest. Whether you need to fill multiple full-time paralegal roles, find the perfect assistant to handle intake and marketing, or just need some help with the phones after-hours, Stafi has your back. Richard Blank, our latest guest on Inappropriate Growth, shared his unconventional journey to starting a business in Costa Rica. It began with a passion for languages, a spark that no traditional education system could extinguish. He went above and beyond, spending his weekends and evenings pouring over books, watching movies, and engaging with people to grow this passion. His grades might not have been Ivy league standard, but his determination caught the attention of a dedicated Spanish teacher who, along with the late principal Norman Schmidt, believed in him and got him into Arizona for their language program. But how did he convince his parents to let him pursue this path instead of the traditionally coveted fields like Ivy League education or medicine? He invoked his great grandparents. Sounds intriguing, right? Richard's story is a testament to the fact that the road less traveled can sometimes lead to the most exciting destinations. His dedication and commitment to his passion is truly inspiring, and a reminder to us all that success is not always linear. Tune into this episode of Inappropriate Growth to hear Richard Blank's fascinating journey. Who knows, it might just spark your own path less traveled. https://youtu.be/dGgbmWYXEDk https://youtube.com/shorts/BXniUNkkN-I https://youtube.com/shorts/K1E8QnY-zR8 Richard Blank hired bassist Garry Gary Beers of INXS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGjN5H4xPQ Paul Angelle, Inappropriate Growth Podcast, Richard Blank, Costa Rica's Call Center, Outsourcing, Telemarketing Call Centre, BPO, Nearshore Contact Center, Sales, Entrepreneur, B2B, Business, Podcast, Gamification,Leadership, Marketing, CX, Guest, Money, B2C education, BPO trainer, call centre, contact centre, contact center, trend, trending, Sunset, Louisiana, United States Hosted on Acast. I believe in preventative measures instead of cures. So instead of a 10 minute conversation, Andrew, it's 20, 30 second conversations that you need to land. You need to get the checkpoint, the underwater thumbs up scuba diving because people rush their calls. You do agree with positive or negative reactions, reinforcements, Gotta take a breath, see what's going on in this boxing round. What are they doing? How are they reacting to you? Are you lowering temperatures and getting closer? And so these things are very important in these soft skills. So you're asking me to tie this thing in a bow and make it cookie cutter for everybody. You gotta be kidding me. These calls zig and zag. And so if you try to read your script, if you try to interject at the wrong time, cross-talking, interruptions, nice, and a bad call and you wonder why. And so there's certain timing, it's a two for a one, you take back and go in, you repeat and chisel, and you tell Billy with the coffee bread yelling at you to keep making phone calls your supervisor to calm down. because I'm looking to be engaged right now. I'm looking to be in the moment so I can capture that one or two things on that call that will completely diffuse the situation. The Power of Personal Connection in Communication They didn't have matters. They didn't do their due diligence. They didn't look at your LinkedIn profile or website. They were not prepared to talk with you. And so, as I say, make these calls and emails and voicemails custom made. And if you do, at least you're gonna capture their attention so they'll listen to it. How about this? Richard, why are we leaving voicemails? That's a good point, Andrew. Tell you what, how many texts do you get a day? A thousand? How many emails do you get a day? 500? How many voicemails you get a day? five yeah so i'm gonna leave you a great voicemail tell you how great judy is so maybe you'll call me back and um all i know is this when i do call your company back and judy does pick up the phone she'll say richard i've been here for 10 years the only person who's ever complimenting you on the phone to andrew i'm gonna put you right through oh thank you It works, it won't compromise your ethics and it's gonna make somebody's day. So separate yourself from other people, pay that compliment, pay it forward. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…

And there we go, my friend. I was willing to take, and also you have to get past certain guilt, either as parents, friends, and you have to avoid the naysayers and great believers, take them into consideration, but you can't have them stop you. And so sometimes you need to be selfish if you want to go on these adventures. And so my intentions were honorable, but I really had to hold course because I literally had nobody to compare notes to. Nobody was doing this. So I was off on my own and I said, you know what? Be bold and brave and see where life will take you. Excellent. So there's a story that aligns a little bit with that, with hire, lead and chill the company. That is, we were much less intentional, but there was still this path that we followed and we didn't have a roadmap either. So we super unintentionally started Hire Lead Chill in that nobody else was doing this recruiting for the home service space back at seven or eight years ago. It was not a consideration to outsource recruiting really in the home service space for 98% of the businesses out there. The Art of Handling Gatekeepers and Creating Positive Momentum It's really an adjustment of mass. Yeah. And in the beginning, people have these ego defense, especially with their mechanisms. And they're black and blue and we're good, thanks. And you sound like a salesman and just send me information. Fine, I'll take that romantic death. But you're at least going to say that to me seven minutes in because I'm going to ask you a bunch of questions in charge of your secretary. You have to understand there are things like positive escalations where if I get a gatekeeper on the phone and I get the pass to pitch and I get transferred to you, I will definitely let them know verbally and in writing how amazing that individual is. So when I call your company back, they remember me. And they add to my momentum. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…
