Caring for the land is resistance to whiteness. The accelerating climate catastrophe calls upon us to reestablish a relationship to the Earth, as well as connect the struggles of the land to the broader movement for total liberation. This week on Race Capitol we explore the many ways the Amerikan Empire is fueling environmental destruction in Black, Brown, and Native communities, and how oppressed folks are fighting back against this persisting, settler-colonial violence. First, our co-host, Naomi Isaac, sits down with María Torres-López (she/her/ella), the founder of Diáspora En Resistencia (@diaspora_en_resistencia) , where we discuss the toxic coal ash and other eco-violence impacting Puerto Rico. Maria delves into the fight for total sovereignty for the Puerto Rican people as the question of PR’s statehood continues to become a national discussion. Next we hear from Eriqah Vincent, Network Engagement Director and long time member of Power Shift Network, Eriqah talks about PSN’s upcoming virtual convergence featuring guest speaker, Dr. Angela Davis! Later, Eriqah gives us the tea on Johnny Appleseed and we discuss how COVID-19, white nationalism, and state-sponsored violence are fueling environmental injustice in BIPOC communities. Finally, Thelonius Cook, a farmer and the owner of Mighty Thundercloud Edible Forest, talks with us about the importance of Black food sovereignty, as well as the institutionalized racism that keeps Black farmers on the margins. Be sure to subscribe to Race Capitol on your favorite podcasting app to catch our full interviews!
