In Retrospect - Episode 4: Political Correctness vs. Freedom of Speech? With Dr. J. Fynn-Paul
Manage episode 316490278 series 3141833
University and campus culture has always been a center of freedom of expression and social experiments and which consequently often influenced the rest of society with progressive change as a result. However, some may argue the current wave of wokeness across certain campuses has actually halted this position as “liberal safe haven” because equality or equity is seen as more important. Furthermore, is academic freedom or even freedom of speech in general in danger?
In this episode of In Retrospect we interview Dr. Jeffrey Fynn-Paul, who is an economist, historian and last but not least lecturer at our program of International Studies. Dr Fynn-Paul will analyze these movements on campus/in society and the (mis-)interpretation of history that led to the current situation. We will also discuss his involvement in History Reclaimed, an initiative by various other scholars and him promoting a balanced view of history, which should not be misused for propaganda purposes. After the interview, In Retrospect hosts Julian, Lucrezia, Franka and Tobias will discuss the dilemma of this episode as well in an interesting dialogue. We are also very interested to hear your take on this dilemma of today: do you think that political correctness hurts freedom of speech in today’s society?
