The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. A note from Baxter, co-host, producer, and editor of Really Weird Stuff: A Twin Peaks Podcast. I had to pause working on Part 4 of The Return because, as I'm sure you know, David Lynch died today, the 16th of January. 2025. David felt that numbers were always significant, so I looked up 16 and found this : "16 is a powerful number that holds spiritual information about you and your destiny. While having 16 in your chart speaks to independence, service to other people, and leading others, it most truly speaks to one thing: wisdom. It points to old souls that have the wisdom to teach and lead others." Since he (along with Laura) is the reason for the season, I had to pay direct tribute to him and I had to do it today. If you're hurting from this loss, you're not alone. And if you feel alone, watch something David made. It always helps me. On episode 31 of Really Weird Stuff: A Twin Peaks Podcast , we're diving headlong into the 1992 cinematic prequel, " Fire Walk With Me" , written by Robert Engels and David Lynch , and directed by David Lynch . It was released to theaters August 28th, 1992 and flopped HARD. It had premiered at Cannes earlier that year, to the bafflement of audiences and most critics. A handful of European critics were pioneers of understanding the film for the masterpiece it is. Sheryl Lee and Ray Wise give everything they have to tell the story of Laura's final days. We also learn a little about Theresa Banks and the agents who mysteriously disappeared whilst investigating cases with the top secret designation: Blue Rose. We did a tremendous amount of prep for this episode, including studying the lore of the Lodge Entities, providing foot notes from The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer , and doing our best to understand The Coop Loop . Predictably, the discussion gets fairly heavy at times. TRIGGER WARNINGS: for discussing Sexual Assault, Drug Abuse, and Incest . But we also manage to have a little fun mining the moments of levity, heaping love onto some favorite characters (including Bobby and Carl), and reminiscing about when we first got to know Laura Palmer. As Amy overheard from some teenage girls in the bathroom of the Westfield New Jersey Mall Cinema in 1992, "there are some movies you just have to be an adult to understand".
