Nicholas Roche, a scion of a cycling family and former professional cyclist, is now
the voice of the Tour de France.
I spoke with Roche in early October when he was visited the United States to
compete in the Belgian Waffle Ride, a prestigious gravel race in Lawrence, Kansas.
Before the race, he attended the Kansas City Chiefs’ Thursday night football game
(no, he did not see Taylor Swift).
Roche, son of Stephen Roche, who is perhaps the best Irish cyclist in history,
retired from professional cycling a few years ago and joined the broadcast booth.
If you watch the Tour de France in the United States on NBC’s streaming service,
Peacock, there are two options. You can watch Peacock’s broadcast with Phil
Liggett, Bob Roll, and Christian Vande Velde, or you can watch the no-frills
production from the ASO, the company that owns the Tour de France, with Roche
and Anthony McCrossan, a longtime cycling journalist and announcer.
Together, they bring viewers the best analysis of the race and, as a bonus, Roche
provides excellent recommendations on the local food and wine.
They call each stage of the race, uninterrupted, without advertisements. Roche is
the John McEnroe of the broadcast booth. From his own experience, he can tell
us not only what is happening but why it is happening and what will happen.
