Welcome to The Daily Quote—a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I’m your host, Andrew McGivern, and today is October 17th.

Now, you might not know this, but today is National Edge Day. It’s a day that celebrates a straight-edge lifestyle—one that focuses on sobriety, clarity, and, let’s be honest, keeping it together while the rest of the world might be spilling drinks. And, of course, October happens to be Sober October, so if you’ve taken on that challenge, today is basically your day to shine.

With that in mind, I’ve chosen a quote by Marcus Aurelius that I think ties in beautifully with the straight-edge mindset:

"You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength."

Now, here’s the thing: when you strip away distractions, like alcohol or other substances, you start to gain a clearer view of what’s actually going on in your head. Sometimes, it’s a mess in there—kind of like a teenager’s bedroom. But that’s the beauty of it: you’re in control of cleaning it up, organizing it, and making it work for you. It’s about taking responsibility for what you can control and letting go of what you can’t.

Choosing to live without substances is really about that inner power, that strength Marcus Aurelius talks about. You’re saying, “I’ve got enough going on in my mind that I don’t need to complicate it further.” It’s almost like choosing the mental high ground in every situation. You don’t have to numb yourself from the chaos outside because, at the end of the day, you’ve got control over how you react to it.

So, whether you’re on the Sober October train or just trying to make better choices today, remember that your real strength comes from within. When you choose clarity, you choose power. And who doesn’t want a little more of that?

Alright, that’s it for today’s episode. Thank you for joining me here on The Daily Quote. I hope you feel a little more empowered to take on whatever comes your way today. Until next time, take care of your mind—it’s the only one you’ve got.
