The marketers at Chevy take one look at the youthful popularity of the Volkswagen Beetle and decide to emulate key features of that novel little auto: its compact size, air-cooled rear engine, and scaled-down transaxle, among others—in designing the company’s first “American-sized compact”: the Corvair.
