×In today’s Gospel lesson from the fifth chapter of Matthew we hear Jesus tell his disciples that they are the light of the world. As we ponder this reading we realize that the only way we can be a light of the world is when we shine Christ’s light for others. When we shine the light of Christ it not only helps others to see Jesus, but it helps us to see Christ in others too. Matthew 5:13-20…
Today we hear in Matthew a portion of scripture that has become known as the beatitudes, and in these verses we hear of people being blessed that we wouldn’t normally think of in that way. Jesus helps to bring the perspective to our lives that we are all blessed, no matter what our circumstance, because we know Christ present with us in our lives. He journeys with us, bringing us forgiveness and grace and hope, and reminds us that we are always blessed and forever loved. Matthew 5:1-12…
Today in our second lesson from First Corinthians, the first chapter, we hear Paul reminding his fellow Christians to be united in mind and purpose. At our best the Christian Church should be able to be united in our call to love God and love our neighbor, to proclaim the Gospel and see the message about the cross as the power of God. There are many ways that we are doing this already – thanks be to God, but there will always be more that can be done until the kingdom reaches its fullness. May the Spirit continue to work in our midst, so that the world might better know and experience the Christian Church in all its forms as a united Body in their purpose of proclaiming and living out the Christ’s Gospel of love. 1 Corinthians 1:10-18…
Today we are reminded to invite others to “come and see.” The invitations that are made in this story are not complex, but these invitations are profoundly life changing. May we be so excited as John and Andrew, that we can’t help but invite others into the journey of faith, so that they might also know the blessing of the Body of Christ, and the joy, freedom, and hope that it brings. John 1:29-42…
Today for our Gospel lesson we have the beginning of John, where we hear of how “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” As we begin this new year, may it be one for you that is filled with hope – hope not only for good things in this coming year, but hope that brings you light in the darkness, and sustains you until the kingdom of God comes in all its fullness, and our healing and joy are complete. John 1:1-18…
The true Christmas miracle comes in the gift of Emmanuel – God with us. May we approach the Jesus part of Christmas with the same wonder that we have for the Santa part of Christmas, knowing that with Jesus the wonder for us will never end, because the gift of Christ is eternal. Luke 2:1-20
While most people love the seasons of Advent and Christmas, because we think, who doesn’t love celebrating a baby coming into the world and contemplating all the blessings in our lives, when we consider the Gospel text from Matthew today we remember that the news of Christ coming might have unearthed some other emotions for certain people like Mary and Joseph. The good news in all of this is that the Holy spirit through baptism is with us just as it was with Joseph and Mary, and it will give us the strength that we need to face the challenges to which we are called and guide us as we seek to live into those callings. We do notgo it alone, for as this story reminds us, we can also give thanks for the gift of Emmanuel, God with us, as we seek to follow God’s call. Matthew 1:18-25…
Today we hear in our Gospel lesson of how John the Baptist asked from prison if Jesus was the one who was to come or if they should wait for another. Jesus answers this question for John by reflecting the words of the prophets of old and telling him about what people hear and see about Jesus – how he brings healing and hope to those in need. As we strive to follow our servant King, may we too seek to help bring healing to the world and share the good news for the many who long to hear it. Matthew 11:2-11…
In our text from Isaiah 11 we hear that “a little child shall lead them,” and it is always good to have a friendly reminder that we are called to do our part to bring the peaceable kingdom into our midst. As we do acts of love for those in our lives, those in our neighborhood, and those in our world to be instruments of God’s peace, that is what will make this Christmas perfect even in the midst of our imperfect world. This experience can give us the perspective that a little child is leading us in love, and that the Spirit of the Lord is guiding us along the way until that day when together we might be in the midst of the wolf living with the lamb, the leopard lying down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling in community, the cow and the bear grazing side by side with their young lying down together, and the lion eating straw like an ox, with Christ at the center of it all. Isaiah 11:1-10…
Today we celebrate Christ the King Sunday. It is a day where we should not only celebrate the blessing that Christ the King is to our lives, but we should also learn from his example of how to be a servant to all, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. As we do, may we try to shape our whole lives to reflect this call, so that the Kingdom of Christ might continue to grow until the day when he comes again. Luke 23:33-43…
