Richard Lui is a familiar face in television news. He currently serves as weekend anchor on MSNBC, but a role that he has played for years without compensation or awards is that of caregiver first to his ailing father and now to his mother. This is something that millions of people, at least 50 million in the U.S., do every day. Richard is also a filmmaker and has come out with his second documentary on the subject of caregiving, but the latest film, "Unconditional" focuses on the mental health of caregivers who carry a heavy burden. The film profiles three families, including Richard's and how they all cope with the challenges and the pain with resilience, patience, humor and, of course, LOVE. This episode of "Shoes Off Inside" was originally supposed to be about how to mentally prepare for the new year ahead with the help of our guest psychologist Dr. Jenny Wang. But then, the cataclysmic LA wildfires hit and we knew we had to pivot. The destruction to homes, businesses and entire neighborhoods is so immense, it's difficult to truly understand the scale of loss. As of the date of this episode, more than 180,000 people have been displaced by the fires. More than 10,000 structures are damaged or destroyed. 11 human lives have been lost. Animals, both domestic and wild, have also been dramatically impacted. May, Kelly and Tamlyn speak with Dr. Wang about how we can all help each other through this unprecedented disaster and what each one of us can do to make a difference even in the smallest of ways. This was a way for us to share a space of comfort, compassion, sympathy and empathy. Thank to all the incredible first responders who are courageously putting themselves in harm's way to save others. At the heart of this episode is the hotly debated issue of the "coddled" generation. These are Gen Z'ers and, now, Gen Alpha who have been overprotected by parents from the real world with all of it's challenges, pain, and dangers. But ironcially, these same kids have been severely underprotected from social media. According to psychologist and NYU professor, Jonathan Haidt, this combination has led to a multitude of problems including depression and self-harm as well as a complete lack of accountibility. Social media has created an entire generation of addicted "keyboard warriors", who hide behind their devices and say whatever they want without reprecussions. This behaviour manifests in other areas. May shares her firsthand experience as a university professor who has battled this lack of accountability among students. Recently, she was the target of unfounded incidenary remarks and when she asked for university support, it was rejected. May, Kelly and Tamlyn talk about the reasons behind this kind of hostile and evasive behavior, and what we can do to slow and, perhaps, even avert the further breakdown of civility. From starting as a model in the U.S. and Asia, to becoming a full-blown heart throb on TV and film in South Korea and worldwide, Daniel continues to entertain the masses. He stars in the series "Wheel of Time" and has a new Korean movie coming out, "Dog Days", February 7th. But what makes him truly endearing is his authenticity and humility.
