2024 St. Petersburg Jazz Festival showcases five great evenings of jazz in four venues April 1-6, plus two free jazz workshops around Pinellas County. The schedule features innovative collaborations, renown musicians, Grammy winners/nominees and international stars. The featured bands will perform globally flavored compositions with stylisticinfluences from Cuba, Brazil, Israel, Spain, Morocco, Gypsy (Django Reinhart) and more. Some songs are newly composed, others are American and jazz standards, but all are freshly reimagined. www.StPeteJazzFest.com Manson’s group, O Som Do Jazz will perform April 5 and the group has a new 4 th CD out called Aberto featuring
musicians are Andrea Moraes Manson (vocals/lyrics), José Valentino Ruiz (flute/saxophone), Tabajara Belo (guitar), Bruno Miranda (piano), Rafael Pereira (percussion), Alejandro Arenas (bass), Mark Feinman (drums) and I
(trombone/composer).
The group has been playing since 2007. Says Manson: “We like to go deeper into Brazilian music rather than focusing on what was popular in the U.S. with Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd. We like the Tamba Trio, Elis Regina, Elza Soares, J. T. Meirelles, Toquinho, Zimbo Trio, Mauricio Einhorn, Baden Powell and of course, Tom Jobim.
On Aberto, seven of the eight selections are originals written by me in styles that include samba, Bossa Nova, and Baião.”
Founded by Festival Director Dr. David Manson, this is the St. Petersburg Jazz Festival’s 15th year. Manson teaches jazz studies, composition, recording arts, world music and low brass in the Music and MIRA (Music Industry/Recording Arts)
programs at St. Petersburg College. He is director of the EMIT series, a nonprofit organization in its 28th season. EMIT is the presenter of the annual St. Petersburg Jazz Festival and has sponsored over 500 concerts and workshops of creative
music since inception in 1995. EMIT supports the Recording Arts Program with Boys & Girls Club students and produces the EMIT Latin Jazz Fest, Clearwater Latin Music Sundays and concerts throughout the year. Manson launched the non-
profit EMIT 28 years ago. “I wanted to bring interesting music to St. Petersburg and support local artists. At the time, there was a strong jazz scene here and Al Downing was alive. I worked with him some and helped him write grants. But I
wanted to create a jazz festival that was a little edgier with some Latin jazz and showcasing composers and performers. I also wanted to get out into the community and get different venues and attract different audiences,” explains Manson.
How is the St. Peterburg Jazz Festival unique? “Our secret is we are a little bit of boutique concert, not beholden to any one genre so we can center in on the real spirit of the music.” #davidmanson #stpetejazzfestival #stpetejazzfest #stpete #WADA #artsXchange #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #nanettewiser
