When Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered in 1987, it didn’t have the easiest path to success. First of all, the show wasn’t airing on a network — it was shown in syndication, with different air times in different markets. Second, the TNG crew was competing against the crew of the original Star Trek, which was in the midst of a successful feature film franchise. And third — as even the most die-hard TNG fans will tell you — the show struggled to find its footing in its first season. Of course, the show went on to find great acclaim and a fervent fan base as the show found its unique voice and the cast gelled. A lot of credit for the latter has gone to Patrick Stewart, who was not only the fictional Captain of the Enterprise, but also the de facto captain of the cast. When Jonathan Frakes spoke about Stewart’s leadership role on TNG during a Star Trek: First Contact day Panel a few years back, Stewart revealed why keeping his crew in line was such an important responsibility for him.
