Episode 36: A Horse Racing Ethics Lesson from RTIP's Phil O'Hara
Manage episode 363570969 series 3269865
When considering a career in the Thoroughbred industry, it is important to understand the varying perspectives on animals being used in sport and for entertainment purposes. From the 1970s to present day, ethics in horse racing have evolved, and what was once accepted in the past is now part of this era’s growing list of taboos. From fairness and integrity to animal welfare, this presentation by Phil O'Hara, assistant professor of practice at the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program, will define ethics, guide the audience through several eras of horse racing, and explore how the industry has addressed ethical dilemmas. And stick around, because Robert Hartman joins us later to talk about RTIP and how prospective students can get into the program.
Note: mature topics are discussed in this episode pertaining to equine welfare and gambling integrity. Please use appropriate discretion. While much of our content and programming is geared toward many age groups, this episode is suggested for high school and college-aged students.
