On this very special episode of The UMass Basketball Podcast, Sage goes down memory lane with Marty Dobrow, who literally wrote the book on UMass basketball. Dobrow covered the team throughout the glory years of the 1990s and wrote Going Big Time, a detailed account of the program’s history and its rise to national prominence under John Calipari. Highlights of the conversation include Dobrow touching on Rick Pitino’s UMass legacy (approximately 36:30-49:00), UMass completely captivating the state (approximately 53:00), the 94-95 year (approximately 1:03:00-1:06:00), Coach Cal’s eventual departure (approximately 1:12:00-1:17:00), the enigmatic brilliance of Sage’s favorite player Mike Williams (approximately 1:22:00-1:32:00), the magical memories of Giddel Padilla’s Final game (approximately 1:50:00-2:00:00) and much much more. Dobrow is a masterful storyteller and outstanding person who Sage has known since childhood. Sage apologizes for any shoddy audio, instances of over eagerly cutting Dobrow off, or excessive use of the word “like” when trying to put words to his most formative fandom memories. Enjoy it!
