In 1993, the year before he became President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela visited Glasgow to thank its people (and those of the other 8 authorities that granted him Freedom of the City) for their support through the years of international campaigning and resistance; all of which contributed to his eventual release from prison in 1990.
In this first episode of our second series, we hear from a man who was at the heart of the anti-apartheid campaign in Glasgow and the UK; Brian Filling, Chair of the Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation who relives stories from the time and lessons learned.
We also visit Blackfriars Primary School to find out how Laura Houston's P7 class explored apartheid, Civil Rights, racism and much more through use of our new FREE 80 page resource, available to download now.
This episode was made to sit alongside the resource and to inspire and encourage educators to bring all these issues in to their teaching, whilst making connections to history and current issues and events, locally and globally.
*** We'll soon be releasing a bonus episode with a longer version of our conversation with Brian, which will give even greater context to the story. Subscribe to the podcast to make sure you don't miss it!
We'll also be running a CPD to go with the resource - check our website for full details of dates once they're available, or get in touch: enquiries@wosdec.org.uk
The Foundation was set-up to ensure the lessons learned from the anti-apartheid movement and Nelson Mandela's connection to Glasgow are not forgotten. This includes raising funds for a permanent statue of him in the city and doing educational work; the resource being part of that.
Extra links you may find interesting include a video of Mandela's visit and a 2018 BBC interview with Brian. Plus, there are more external Nelson Mandela-related links here on the Foundation's site.
If you're looking to coincide/inform your teaching with anniversaries connected to Nelson Mandela, then these may be useful:
- July 18th Nelson Mandela Day (his birthday in 1918)
- Dec 5th (the day he died, 2013)
- Feb 11th (release from prison, 1990)
If you enjoy the episode, help us spread the word: leave us a review, give us a rating, share, ReTweet, Like & tell your friends! It makes a huge difference - thank you!
