Professor Alan Jagolinzer
Auditing Disinformation: Can We Use Accounting Principles to Fight Fake News? Professor Alan Jagolinzer is one of the emerging leading figures in the fight against disinformation. He is organizing the Cambridge Disinformation Summit taking place in late July 2023 at the University of Cambridge.
But it's his journey to this point that is particularly interesting. After almost a decade in the US Airforce, he has been a professor of accounting at Stanford, the University of Colorado, and now Cambridge Judge Business School, where he heads the accounting faculty department at Cambridge University.
It’s the disinformation around stock and market manipulation that led him down the rabbit hole, and he is now developing research and curriculum on this subject.
Topics discussed: What lessons in fighting financial fraud can be applied to fighting disinformation?
Media literacy, transparency, and government oversight. What role does each play in ensuring accountability in our online world?
How do we protect free speech and hold accountable that speech within social media platforms?
Should people be allowed to sue platforms for damages?
Alan spoke through the direct ways corporations are falling victim to bad actors on social - from manipulating stock prices, competitor attacks, political influence, impersonations, and threats to senior executives.
