What do you do to get under the layer to really get down to those lower levels? Is it just follow-up questions, mindset, worldview, and how that works for you? How'd you get this job anyway? What are things like around here? What did your boss do before they were your boss? Wow did you end up with this job? Why are questions such a big part of This is Strategy? If you had to charge ten times as much as you charge now, what would you do differently? If it had to be free, what would you do differently? Who's it for, and what's it for? What is the change we seek to make? How did you choose the questions for The Strategy Deck? How big is our circle of us? How many people do I care about? Is the change we're making contagious? Are there other ways to gamify the use of questions? Any other thoughts on how questions might be gamified? How do we play games with other people where we're aware of what it would be for them to win and for us to win? What is it that you're challenged by? What is it that you want to share? What is it that you're afraid of? If there isn't a change, then why are we wasting our time? Can you define tension? What kind of haircut do you want? How long has it been since your last haircut? How might one think about intentionally creating that question? What factors should someone think about as they use questions to create tension? How was school today? What is the kind of interaction I'm hoping for over time? How do I ask a different sort of question that over time will be answered with how was school today? Were there any easy questions on your math homework? Did anything good happen at school today? What tension am I here to create? What wrong questions continue to be asked? What temperature is it outside? When the person you could have been meets the person you are becoming, is it going to be a cause for celebration or heartbreak? What are the questions we're going to ask each other? What was life like at the dinner table when you were growing up? What are we really trying to accomplish? How do you have this cogent two sentence explanation of what you do? How many clicks can we get per visit? What would happen if there was a webpage that was designed to get you to leave? What were the questions that were being asked by people in authority at Yahoo in 1999? How did the stock do today? Is anything broken? What can you do today that will make the stock go up tomorrow? What are risks worth taking? What are we doing that might not work but that supports our mission? What was the last thing you did that didn't work, and what did we learn from it? What have we done to so delight our core customers that they're telling other people? How has your international circle informed your life of questions? What do I believe that other people don't believe? What do I see that other people don't see? What do I take for granted that other people don't take for granted? What would blank do? What would Bob do? What would Jill do? What would Susan do? What happened to them? What system are they in that made them decide that that was the right thing to do? And then how do we change the system? How given the state of the world, do you manage to continue to care as much as you do? Do you walk to school or take your lunch? If you all can only care if things are going well, then what does that mean about caring? Should I have spent the last 50 years curled up in a ball? How do we go to the foundation and create community action?…

Amr Awadallah is an Egyptian born computer scientist and entrepreneur based in Silicon Valley. What’s particularly interesting about Amr’s story is that he had no interest in becoming an entrepreneur. His plan was to become an academic and teach computer science back in Cairo. But while at Stanford University where he was doing his PhD, the startup bug hit him and he launched his first venture, Aptivia, back in 1999, which was later acquired by Yahoo. He went onto found Cloudera which went public back in 2017 in an IPO that raised over $4 billion. Now on his third venture, Zir AI, Amr is hoping to revolutionise the way we search online. In this podcast, Awadallah talks about his entrepreneurial journey, the key ingredients of a startup ecosystem and why paying it forward is so important.…

Almost a third of all the entreprenuers in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) are Jordanian, despite the country accounting for just 3 per cent of the region's total population. More than 50 per cent are under the age of 24, with 22 per cent holding degrees in IT, Computer Science, and Engineering. To get a better understanding of Jordan's startup ecosystem, we spoke with Zeena Majali, founder of Crystel and Xina AI, an Arabic virtual assistant.…

When the pandemic first began to take hold, the development of a vaccination against the coronavirus wasn’t just a way to prevent its spread, but a means to go back to normality. Yet now that several vaccines have received approval and are being administered in many countries around the world, the route back to normality is looking rough and somewhat vague. With these vaccines, we are likely to see widening gaps between the countries that can afford it and have the infrastructure in place to administer it to their populations and the countries that do not. Whether we like it or not, we are constantly being affected by the ‘fear of missing out’ or ‘FoMO’, a term coined by investor Patrick McGinnis in 2004. Patrick McGinnis. (Image via Patrick McGinnis' Twitter) Our generation is increasingly desiring to be connected to what others are doing in order to avoid the loss of potential fun experiences. Social media is not making this easier explained McGinnis in Amman on August 1, during an event organized by Wamda and hosted by the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation Grant Program. This need of maximized level of experience is also felt in the workplace: As a potential entrepreneur you’d want to quit your desk job and follow your passion, but at the same time you’d want to keep your status and sustainable pay cheque. To McGinnis the way out of this dilemma is pretty simple: keep both. But how do we make sure we don’t lose focus and fail in both worlds? We answer this question and more in an interview we had with McGinnis to learn more about his theory and what brings him to the MENA region. Tune in to the podcast below to listen to the full interview.…

We’ve all met those entrepreneurs who brag about dropping everything just to follow their dream and start their own business. You need to be fully committed they’d say. “But what happens when a year or two down the line you fail?” asks investor Patrick McGinnis. Patrick McGinnis. Unlike the mentors who preach the all or nothing at all mentality, McGinnis thinks that leaving your office job to build a startup is an uncalculated risk and too much of a burden to handle, specifically because failure in the startup world is not the exception. For most tech companies which intellectual property or talent is not compelling enough to catch the eye of the Googles, the Facebooks, or the Yahoos of the world, the cold hard reality is death. Some estimates even evaluate the failure at 90 percent of startups. McGinnis is the founder of Dirigo Advisors investment firm, and is an investor in more than 20 companies including Bluesmart, Nxtp.labs, and Ipsy. His first job forced him to work out of a ‘cubicle’ on Wall Street, an unlikely place for a future startup investor. Eventually, the mundaneness of his job pushed him to explore other horizons across the innovative world. However, he did not quit his day job simply because it was too risky to lose a sustainable paycheck. Instead, he dedicated only 10 percent of his time, effort and money to his passion. In 2016 McGinnis published ‘The 10% Entrepreneur’ to explain how building your startup in parallel to your daily job might actually bear better results than full on commitment. Tune in to the podcast below to hear him speaking in Amman on August 1, during an event organized by Wamda, and hosted by the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation Grant Program.…
