The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. Our success and often even our survival have less to do with our talents and abilities than they have to do with our determination and persistence.

Einstein is best remembered for his theory of general relativity. It took him ten years to fully develop. During that time the world went through war, and he went through divorce. Early in his academic career, his instructors didn’t think he’d amount to much. He kept going.

Life happens. Some of our problems are really hard to solve. And while we are working on those problems, we often have other problems that pop up too.

In the faces of these realities we have two choices. We can either quit and accept things as they are, or we can stick with it and keep going until we find a way or make a way.

Send us a text How Do We Meet Our Needs? “The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” - Matthew 4:3 Just before Jesus began his public ministry, he was led into the wilderness where he was forced to face three types of temptations that are common to humanity. Surrendering to any of these would have derailed him being who God called him to be. The first temptation is seemingly so harmless that that we often fail to recognize it when we are facing it. Jesus was hungry. He both wanted and needed to eat. We need food, clothing, shelter, emotional and physical support and intimacy. We all get hungry for these at times. There’s no shame or sin in that. They are human necessities. The challenge we face is to resist the temptation to take short cuts that compromise our values, dignity, or the dignity of another person in order to meet those needs. Like Jesus, we trust our footsteps to God’s pathway and trust that our needs will be fulfilled the right way at the right time. I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.” - Joel 2:13 The prophet Joel warned the people of his day of the pending calamity they would suffer if they continued down the road they were following. The same type of warning applies to many of us today, and it certainly applies to all of us collectively as humanity. Our lack of care for the world around us, our lack of care for each other, will lead us to more hardship and suffering. But even in the midst of this dire warning, there was yet a seed of hope. If we sincerely have a change of heart that leads us to changing the way we treat each other and the way we live, there’s still time for us to advert these disasters. Send us a text “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.” - from Matthew 6:1 If we are practicing our religion and spirituality in order to look good or to win the respect of others, then we are doing it for the wrong reasons. Alternatively, Jesus shows us a spirituality where our prayer simply becomes our way of life. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, (Live life with awe, wonder and trust.) your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (Never give up the hope the world as it should be.) Give us today our daily bread. (Stay centered and focused in the needs of the moment.) And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. (Practice Forgiveness) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil. The season lasts 40 days and concludes with the execution, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Lent begins with an earnest self examination. If it is true that God appeals to the world through the people who claim to know and love God, how we carry and conduct ourselves matters. Are we showing up with God’s joy, recognizing and being grateful for all the good that is? Are we showing up with God’s hope, tenaciously holding on to the belief in a better tomorrow no matter how difficult things are today? Are we showing up with God’s faith, stubbornly fighting through every hardship unwilling to bow down to despair or injustice? Peter’s vision showed him that God has other plans. Many Christians both over the centuries and today have the same mindset. They think these other folks aren’t really Christians if they don’t think, believe, and act as they do. This century’s Gentile Christians are LGBTQ Christians. Many Christians believe these folks must be excluded from the community. But God has other plans. Don’t call anyone unclean who God has made clean. Send us a text Give to Everyone: Stop Practicing Selective Compassion “Give to everyone who ask of you, and if anyone takes away what is yours, do not ask for it back again” - Luke 6:30 This verse comes from the middle of some of Jesus’s most challenging teachings. Jesus is challenging us to think, act, and react differently. The sequence ends with Jesus’s declaration that we will experience our highest level of wellbeing if we do. So why give to everyone? To avoid making ourselves the judge. To share the mercy, grace and forgiveness that we’d like to receive ourselves. It’s easy for us to help people who we feel deserve it… people in bad situations through no fault of their own. If we have any love in our hearts, it’s easy to help folk like this. But what about people who find themselves in bad situations largely because of their lack of character and judgment, because of their poor choices and bad habits? Our well of empathy for them tends to run dry. We’ve made mistakes and poor choices. We’ve sometimes acted in bad faith with a lack of discipline, integrity, and courage. Perhaps some of the good people in our lives have distanced themselves from us or walked away from us entirely. Perhaps the people we have surrounded ourselves with are just as broken and dysfunctional as we are. There is no human life that is beyond God’s redemption. None of us are too far gone. God works for the good in everything for those who love God and align themselves with God’s purposes and intentions. (Romans 8:28) The same love that saved the sinner hanging on the cross is available to us. The same power that raised Jesus from the grave lives in us. (Romans 8:11) It is this power that will transform us and eventually transform our circumstances. Certain doors may be closed and certain opportunities lost. But God offers new possibilities and purposes for us as God’s grace renews us daily. (Lamentations 3:22-23) Don’t give up on yourself. God hasn’t given up on you. I’m Horace McMillon. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.” - Oprah Winfrey The writer of Proverbs said that as a person thinks in their heart, so they are. (Proverbs 23:7). Even if a selfish, greedy person were to put on a lavish banquet, the meal would not be worth eating. There is no joy there. One of my favorite miracle stories is that of Jesus feeding the multitude. In the Gospel of John’s telling of the story, Jesus was concerned about the wellbeing of the crowd and wanted them to bit to eat in order to sustain them. He has the disciples ask the crowd if anyone had something they could share. Only one little boy offered up his lunch. Rather than complain about what he didn’t have and what others didn’t do, Jesus gave thanks for what he had and began to share with everyone. Then a miracle took place and the whole crowd had more than enough to eat. I don’t know if the miracle was God miraculously multiplying the food, or if the miracle was the change of heart the crowd had watching Jesus and the boy- causing everyone to share.
