Has prolapse changed your life?
Today I speak with Kimberley Johnson @wildmatrescence, a PhD student in clinical psychology who specializes in perinatal, pelvic, & maternal health.
A former professional cyclist, Kimberley has dealt with her fair share of injuries.
Navigating pelvic organ prolapse after the birth of her first child, Kimberley was forced to take what she knew as an athlete and a PhD student of psychology & try to navigate her way back to being active again.
Kimberley's unique view as a mom, patient & soon-to-be psychologist has changed the focus of her work professionally, & led to shedding light on women attempting to recover from POP as well as the psychological impact of how they're treated in today's medical environment.
Kimberley shares why her research is important and what is lacking in what postpartum women need.
We recorded this episode in 2021 prior to publication of her article in the April/June 2022 @jwhpt "The Importance of Information: Prenatal Education Surrounding Birth-Related Pelvic Floor Trauma Mitigates Symptom-Related Distress" & prior to her current pregnancy.
We talk about:
🔹dealing with injury as a former Pro cyclist
🔹accepting uncertainties of recoveries with lack of sound information
🔹stigma with pelvic floor injuries
🔹birth-related trauma and injury
🔹discrepancy between expectation and reality
