Legacy Series | Ron & Carolyn Klaus Carolyn and Ron Klaus are the founders of Esperanza Health Center in north Philadelphia. They have a remarkable story of living among people in communities that most people avoid, being changed by their experiences in the community, and stepping into needs that they would never have seen had they not been obedient to God and followed him into unlikely places. They have been pioneers in both domestic and international medical missions, church planting, and Christian community development. I have enjoyed time with them over the years, talking about the Kingdom of God, and how to faithfully live that out in the different seasons of life. I sat down with them on July 4th, 2024 in their kitchen which is covered with maps of east Africa and southeast Asia. And asked them to share their story. Jesus said that the key to living an integral life is to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness”. Carolyn and Ron are people whose lives are great examples of that. When they discovered the gospel of the kingdom…medicine, engineering, academics no longer were an end unto themselves, but pathways to express and declare through action that Jesus is Lord over all. If you liked this podcast, please Like and Subscribe and share it with your friends. My prayer is that you will be a follower of Christ who makes learning about, looking for and applying the kingdom of God your top priority. If you want to walk out your calling in healthcare in a way that serves Christ by serving the poorest and most vulnerable of our neighbors, come be part of this CCHF community. Visit the website – CCHF.org – and make plans to join others like you, and like Dr. Klaus, at the next CCHF conference. Learning Series | Chanté Calais-Morgan For Such a Time as This: Transforming our Lived Experiences Into Relatable and Compassionate Patient Care. There has been a more recent emphasis on the effects of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and application of Trauma Informed Care as it relates to the patient populations that we serve. However, there have not been many studies on how doctors' personal experiences with ACEs or other life changing situations can affect the way that we relate and interact with our patients. This was a workshop presented at the 2024 CCHF Conference by Dr. Chanté Calais-Morgan of Christ Community Health Services in Memphis TN. _______________________________ CCHFTalk is a production of Christian Community Health Fellowship. If you want a Christ centered organization, it's all about the people you hire. For 4 decades, Lawndale Christian Health Center has been a model for many of the health ministries across CCHF. Dr. Wayne Detmer, the chief clinical officer of operations has been a key player in hiring the right people for their medical team. A team that's kept Lawndale on mission and made it a great place for them to live out their calling. Wayne has been a great friend and a partner in the work. He served on the CCHF board. He's now on his 2nd term. He's always generous with his time and his incredible intellect. I hope you'll enjoy our chat about his journey and his insights into building a mission faithful health center. Setting a culture of calling, being proximate to suffering, bringing the right kind of people into your team. These are the skills that Wayne Detmer brings that makes Lawndale a special place. And is, of course, it's all by the grace of God. If you've never been to Lawndale, I encourage you to visit sometime. Wayne would love to give you the “Buck 50” Tour. I hope you're encouraged to make your organization the kind of place where people who see medicine as a calling to show and share the love of Christ can find a home. If you enjoy this podcast, please like and subscribe and share it with others. I hope to see you at a CCHF event or at one of our annual conferences soon. ~Written by Steve Noblett Watch the video interview of this episode on our YouTube channel https://youtu.be/BSo-18wlRm8 _______________________________ CCHFTalk is a production of Christian Community Health Fellowship. Legacy Series | Jerry Stromberg I count as one of the greatest privileges in my life to have followed Jerry Stromberg and been mentored by him in the early days of my time at CCHF. Jerry is still one of the most beloved members of the CCHF community and one of the most brilliant. His incredible career includes academia, research, consulting. He's been the administrator for several health centers and ultimately led CCHF as its director for better part of a decade. He's an extraordinary person with a deep love and appreciation for people that he's met around the country and around the globe. And he's a man who's lived out his convictions, moving into the Lawndale community, building longitudinal relationships with communities in rural Ghana. He's actually been named an honorary elder in one of those communities. And being an activist for justice issues around poverty and the impact it's had on individual and community health. I caught Jerry in Chicago a day before he was heading to Wisconsin to speak at a conference. And I was really grateful that he made time to talk about his history with CCHF and the way this community has developed and impacted him. I love Jerry. What can you say about a guy who has served as faculty on medical schools, served internationally with the World Health Organization, and invested himself in communities and organizations in distress, and yet when asked what part of his life brought him the greatest pride, it was the times that he was behind the scenes just serving to facilitate connections with people who would solve problems and create models for health delivery that was tailored to communities wracked with poverty and at the same time remain faithful to the gospel and the power and the hope that it brings. If you enjoyed this podcast, please like, subscribe, and share it with your friends. My prayer is that God will use the work done by people like Jerry Stromberg and the other leaders of CCHF to provide a place for medical disciples like you to connect and rebuild healthcare into an institution that reflects Jesus and his kingdom. An institution that reinforces hope and personhood to the most invisible and overlooked people in our country. Come to a CCHF event or conference or drop us a note and become part of the solution to the brokenness that is healthcare in America. Thanks for listening. Let's change some things. ~Written by Steve Noblett _______________________________ CCHFTalk is a production of Christian Community Health Fellowship . David Caes was one of the early “dreamers” who saw that CCHF could make a lasting impact on healthcare, within neglected communities and through the church. David used his creative gifts and relational personality to build a network and to help practitioners share their experiences and insights with one another. That has been the hallmark of CCHF ever since. He was editor and a contributing writer for CCHF’s quarterly journal: Health & Development, and published “Caring for the Least of These” and the 1st edition of “Upholding the Vision” . Libby, David’s wife, organized annual conferences, and served as administrator for two of the earliest CCHF clinics, Circle Family Health and Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago. Through sacrificial work and faithfulness, David and Libby Caes laid a foundation for something that has grown bigger than they ever dreamed. They continue to serve Jesus where they have opportunities, and have represented Christ and his kingdom in every phase of their lives in both Christian contexts and in secular settings. Legacy Series: Art Jones Host: Steve Noblett The story of Lawndale began with a group of high school students, a football coach leading a bible study, and a 4th year medical student. That football coach was Wayne Gordon. And that medical student was Art Jones. Art went on to help found Lawndale Christian Health Center , which started out as a clinic that charged just $5 a visit and that worked out of what had previously been a burned out Cadillac dealership. It's an amazing story, and it continues to unfold. Art went on to do his residency in internal medicine and then a cardiology fellowship. And Lawndale Christian Health Center has grown to become a model and a mentor for scores of Christian health centers around the country. It's the largest employer and one of the biggest economic engines in the west-side of Chicago. Art is now a consultant with Health Management Associates and he continues to work for systemic change in health care on a macro level. He was kind enough to meet with me recently in Lawndale Christian Health Center’s original building. We talked about the LCHC’s story, about the influence that CCHF has had on his life and on the development of the health center. He shared his insights on the need for leaders to redesign the way we think about health care delivery. Christian ministry is not at odds with providing the best care possible for our patients and to do it in a financially sustainable way. Art said it makes total sense to do the right thing, to make our decisions based on what we know is right, best for our patients, and to recognize that we have patients who have never passed through our doors and may never pass through our doors. It's easy to understand why Art has been such an inspiration and mentor for so many Christ centered health centers and their leaders. For more than 25 years, Art's leadership at Lawndale Christian Health Center maintained a balance of faith and innovation. My prayer is that we will take up Art's Challenge to rethink and redesign health care access in ways that meet the needs of our patients. If this resonates with your heart, then come to the next CCHF conference and meet others who are willing to be thought leaders and innovators in delivering whole person care that serves even the most vulnerable in ways that reflect the compassion and the justice of God. ______________________________________ CCHFTalk is a production of Christian Community Health Fellowship . The Leagacy Series: Dr. Daisey Dowell Written by Steve Noblett Dr. Daisey Dowell of Lawndale Christian Health Center is one of my favorite people on the planet. Some years ago, I had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Dowell. I was really impressed by the way that she genuinely loved her patients and how she spent time training mothers to care for their babies, but also how she handled some of the most difficult situations with professionalism and grace. The thing that impressed me the most was how Jesus was just a part of almost every conversation she had, not in any way that felt forced or inappropriate. He just comes out of every pore in her being. Later, I learned about Dr. Dowell’s story, which is one of unimaginable challenge, character and tenacity that springs from a deep faith in God's covering of protection. She became part of the CCHF board. She served as the board chair, so we got to work closely together. She's played a huge role in helping me personally and CCHF as a community address issues of diversity while keeping Christ at the center and his kingdom as our goal. I think you'll be inspired and encouraged by her story and her wisdom. I once asked Dr. Dowell, if the reason that she became a pediatrician was just because she loved children? And she told me that she was a pediatrician more for the mothers than for the children. Because she understood that while she may care for a child and make a difference in that kid's life, if she could disciple a mother and care for her, she might be able to actually break a generational cycle in a family that continues to produce poverty, neglect and abuse. Dr. Dowell's life has been shaped by her relationship with Jesus and by God's word which she has tested and puts into practice every day. We need more providers like her- disciples who are willing to be God's living testimonies in communities where there is so much inequity and suffering. The Leadership Series: Breanna Lathrop Host: Steve Noblett A few years ago, I picked up a great book through InterVarsity Press called "How Neighborhoods Make Us Sick, Restoring Health and Wellness to Our Communities" . I was delighted to find out that it was authored by two ladies who work at Good Samaritan Health Clinic in Atlanta. One of those ladies is Breanna Lathrop. We connected, and she's been a big part of CCHF ever since. Breanna's a great champion for Christian health care and for addressing social determinants of health as an exercise in loving our communities as Jesus does. She's a DMP with a master's in public health. And at the time of this interview, she was serving as the Chief Operating officer at Good Samaritan Health Center in Atlanta and is the Board Chair for CCHF. Breanna's done a lot of workshops for CCHF conferences over the years, and I asked her to be a plenary speaker at the 2024 conference. Her talk was amazing! And if you were not there, you should look it up on our website at cchf.org or on YouTube . It was my privilege to sit down with her the night before her plenary sessions and just talk. The Legacy Series: Susan PostHost: Steve Noblett For almost 20 years, Susan Post has served as the CEO for Esperanza Health Center in North Philadelphia. She has been a mentor to many and has become a true pillar in the CCHF community. Her story of following Christ and how she has grown in her walk with Jesus through her experience in North Philadelphia is inspiring. I hope you are as encouraged and challenged by her dedication to Christ and her love for her community as I have been. “When I made the decision to follow God into North Philly, I didn’t see the danger. I didn’t see the trash. I didn’t see this as a dirty place and all the reasons why I shouldn’t come. Instead, I just saw people all over the place…and I felt like God was saying, ‘These are going to be your people, and you are going to be their person’, sort of like an arranged marriage…and that brought me a lot of joy.” ~Susan Post Susan Post is a great example of what it means to live intentionally and incarnationally. She has been an exceptional leader at Esperanza, leading with humility and faith. We have a lot more to learn from her in the coming years. If you enjoyed this podcast, please like and subscribe, and share it with others. I pray that you will come to see communities in your cities that others avoid and neglect with the same hope and love that Susan sees Hunting Park and Kensington. And I hope you will look for opportunities to meet Susan and other like her at the next CCHF conference . ______________________________________ CCHFTalk is a production of Christian Community Health Fellowship.
